How- ever, in addition to the history and stories seen between its cover, there is another story of how it even came about, and the young woman who per- severed to bring it to fruition. As the dedication in our Ludlow book states, Judy Neff, the author, was born to Alma and Jeff Neff, both now deceased, who “gave her an enduring gift of a memorable childhood here in Ludlow”. Her parents resided on Oak Street when she was born, then eventually transitioned to Linden, Lud- ford, Howard and Laurel before Judy finally left Ludlow at the time of her marriage for Villa Hills. She has kept her maiden name, but is married to Ed Knue, has two daughters, and works as an internal medicine physician at St. Elizabeth’s. You might say she became an author by sheer accident! Judy had seen and read the book on Covington which had come out previously in this series of “city books” and was impressed. She wondered whether there was a book available on the city of Newport and where she could purchase it. An e- mail was sent off to the publishers of Images of America with her questions; however, the publish- ers accidentally misunderstood and thought she wanted to write a book on Newport, and offered her the opportunity to do so. Judy had no previous experience in this line at all, but after six months of chuckling over the offer and being prodded by a close friend who lived in Newport and offered to assist, Judy Neff and Peggy Wiedeman Harris actually agreed to author the book on Newport that was subsequently published in 2004. With the success of the Newport book, Judy Neff’s COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PARTY Please join the future Ludlow Civic Club along with the Knights of Columbus on Friday, December 11 for a fun filled evening at the Knights of Columbus Hall. LUDLOW ELEMENTARY VISITS FIRE HOUSE On October 29, the Ludlow Fire Department was filled with many young children from Ludlow Elementary School. The children came to the fire- house for fire prevention. Their day started with a group picture in front of the ladder truck known as “210”, and then they went inside the firehouse where Chief Ken Williams spoke to them. Firefighter Josh Mounce then put on his fire gear so all the children could see how it looked and how the tank sounded. The goal was for the children to not be afraid if the fire department should have to come to their house for an actual fire. Next, the children were allowed to go inside the fire trucks, and from the many smiles, that was enjoyed by all. THE FACE BEHIND THE BOOKIn 2006, our hometown of Ludlow was proudly added to the line of Images of America books, fea-turing cities from all over the United States. How-ever, in addition to the history and stories seen between its cover, there is another story of how it even came about, and the young woman who per-severed to bring it to fruition.
As the dedication in our Ludlow book states, Judy Neff, the author, was born to Alma and Jeff Neff, both now deceased, who “gave her an enduring gift of a memorable childhood here in Ludlow”. heart desire was to author a book on her hometown of Ludlow. Time after time she was told by the publishers that the city was just too small --- not big enough for any real interest or buying power; but perseverance and tenacity kept her from giving up. Finally after presenting pre-liminary material that showed we did have quite a bit of historical importance and convincing the publishers that many neighboring communities would be in-terested in buying copies, Judy was given the green light to begin.
It took one full year to accomplish the Ludlow book. The first hurdle was to find photographs, as 200 photos were required for the book. Although Ken-ton County Public Library in Covington had many photographs in their archives that she could use, she also placed ads in newspapers, and by word of mouth asked our schools, churches, police department and friends. The second hurdle was to find all of the research documentation to tell the history and to accompany the photographs. Here again the Covington Library was instrumental in success, in addition to numerous Ludlow families with their own memories and history.
An interesting aspect of all this research, and in the aftermath of the book being published, was finding out there were so many things about our city that people never knew beforehand. Judy’s big-gest joy was to meet so many caring and friendly people and to hear their individ-ual stories. Her biggest disappointment? --- Not being able to find any pictures of the inside of the Lagoon Clubhouse. And those 200 photos that seemed so daunting at the beginning of her enterprise ended up to be only a “drop in the bucket”, as she accumulated so many photos that it was a grievous task to decide which ones to use. Her favorite photo, however, was the one chosen to grace the cover of Im-ages of America – LUDLOW, showing two of the most historical aspects of our city, the Lagoon Amusement Park (with roller coaster showing), and in the back-ground, the railroad.
Having said all this, I truly believe Judy Neff enjoyed her busy time of research-ing and authoring her hometown book. She has taken away with her many fond memories, a broader education of our history, and even new friendships. On behalf of the entire Ludlow community, I wish to thank this talented and gracious lady who gave of her time and energy to commit to adding our city of Ludlow to this national list of books. I, for one, won’t read the book ever again, without also remembering “the face behind the book”.

RUMPKE ExPANDS RECYCLINg
Rumpke has increased, effective immedi-ately, the number of items that are recy-clable. They include the following:1) PIZZA BOXES without any food or grease content 2) ALL PLASTIC BOTTLES regardless of number
What is NOT acceptable yet are plastic drink glasses and plastics such as butter tubs, cottage cheese and yogurt contain-ers, etc.
Rumpke has estimated that 60% of the trash they collect is recyclable-- an im-pressive amount! The time is coming when it will cost more to dump trash into a landfill than to recycle.
Ludlow residents can subscribe to recy-cling by contacting Rumpke at: www.rumpkerecycling.com or by calling 859-472-7339. Cost is $4.10 per month and billing is quarterly.
LUDLOW COMMUNITY WALK
The students in Ms. Caple’s, Ms. Dona-hue’s and Ms. Schuh’s classes completed a community walk recently. The students toured the new city building. They met with the mayor and the police chief. They know that the police department provides a service to the community and that the mayor is the elected leader of the city of Ludlow.
The seventy-two students discovered that Hater’s Dry Goods sells clothing. The students heard a little history about the store. Many students promised Mr. Hater that they would be back to purchase a Ludlow shirt or hoodie!
Finally, the tour concluded with a walk past Elmwood Hall, the first house in Ludlow.

ANNUAL LUDLOW CHRISTMAS WALK
The Ludlow Christmas Walk and tour of historic buildings will occur from 6-9:00 p.m. on Satur-day December 5, 2009. Sponsored by the Ludlow Historic Preservation Board, the Christmas Walk is an annual event which benefits historic pres-ervation in our community. This year, houses and churches in both Ludlow and Bromley will be open. The tour includes the Bromley Christian Church (an interesting early 20th century building of beveled concrete block with a stick-style entrance porch) and Old St. Boniface Church in Ludlow, now the new home of St. Luke Community Church. Designed by 19th century Ludlow architect John Boll, St. Boniface/St. Luke is a magnificent Victorian Romanesque Revival style building. The grand plaster-vaulted interior and stained glass win-dows have for years been concealed by dropped ceilings, but are emerging into view again due to a sympathetic restoration currently underway by the new congregation. Houses on the tour are distributed throughout Ludlow and Bromley and include a lovely Italianate Victorian double house from the 1860's; a large, American Foursquare-and-Craftsman style house with recessed porches and ample brick arches; and two, early 20th century Bungalow-style houses. Tickets may be purchased in advance starting Nov. 23 at the Ludlow Pharmacy on Elm St., Ideal Supply on Adela St., and at the Ludlow City Building on Elm St. for $8.00. Or, tickets may be purchased for $10.00 the night of the tour, at St. Luke Community Church, 316 Adela St. In case of any questions, please call Cindy Schachere at 291-6043.

Chief Williams then took the children on a tour of the firehouse. When they got up-stairs, the children saw the new and improved dayroom and kitchen. They also got to see where the firefighters sleep when they have to stay all night. Once the upstairs tour was over, they came back downstairs and got to see all the firefighters gear. Many were able to touch or hold it, and they agreed it was very heavy. At the end of the tour, each child was given a “goodie bag” filled with different items about fire pre-
vention. The children once again enjoyed the annual trip and it was a huge success. Chief Ken Williams began this program when his two daughters were young, and he still enjoys hosting it for the children of Ludlow today. We would like to thank Chief Williams for doing this service for the community for the past eleven years. He has always said, “if it saves one child’s life, it is well worth it.”
