Summer 2014 Edition | Communiqué

MIC is wrapping up another very successful program year, culminating in the wonderful Celebration of México gala in June. It was a momentous year, as we celebrated our 60th anniversary, met the spring challenge grant (thanks to you, our generous donors), balanced MIC’s budget and settled into our new home in the heart of

the University of Minnesota campus. The upcoming year at MIC promises to be a period of strong programs and wider visibility in the community. A branding and marketing campaign is in its early stages and will ultimately give MIC a fresh look and feel in the year ahead. We have an excellent national and global reputation and want to have an even more visible and effective presence in our community. From education, policy, leadership and business, we bring together separate strands to create a fabric of international connections and promote global understanding – and we want our marketing and branding to reflect this. Noting that 2015 will be the 25th anniversary of German reunification, we have selected Germany as the next focus country! Alfred and Ingrid Harrison, two longtime friends of MIC have agreed to serve as honorary chairs of the Celebration of Germany, and we are already working closely with the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Minnesota, Christa Tiefenbacher-Hudson, to put together a year of learning more about Germany. This year’s successes wouldn’t have been possible without the wonderful support of MIC members and donors and I look forward to seeing you at the summer programs where I can thank you personally.

Award-winning Chef Amalia Moreno-Damgaard

“This is Latin America: Lands of cultural diversity, rich in customs and ancient traditions, of family-oriented and friendly people, of hot music and

exotic cuisines.” ~ A. Moreno-Damgaard

Culture through Cuisine is an ongoing program presented by the Minnesota International Center that combines cultural appreciation and awareness with culinary discovery and enjoyment.

CLASSROOM CONNECTION

At MIC’s recent Celebration of México, the Fund-A-Need Ask raised over $40,000 in support for Classroom Connection. Classroom Connection is at the heart of MIC’s mission to promote global understanding and an appreciation for cultural differences. Teachers integrate the program into their curriculum and find it a perfect way to bring lessons to life, while also meeting state academic standards for global studies in 2nd and 3rd grades. These funds will be used to keep the program affordable for schools, to increase staff capacity, and for training, transportation and materials so that last year’s pilot program can be expanded into more schools.

“Classroom Connection is exactly what our schools need right now.” ~ St. Paul School Principal

WHAT ADMINISTRATORS SAY

“This project has changed my life. I have learned so much from sharing my culture with 2nd graders , including many things I didn’t notice about my own culture. Classroom Connection is so amazing, it helps us enhance relationships between different cultures by improving our knowledge.” ~ Janna, Medical Student from Dominican Republic

WHAT SPEAKERS SAY

“There’s really no effective substitute for a native citizen when it comes to instructing and exposing children to world cultures.” ~ Bloomington 3rd Grade Teacher

WHAT TEACHERS SAY

“It’s official. You have made Brazil my all-time favorite country in the world. Can I hug you?” ~ 2nd Grade Student

WHAT STUDENTS SAY

Wednesday, July 23 GlobalSocial with International Visitors Here is a great opportunity for MIC members to meet fascinating international visitors, who are emerging leaders in their own countries, at an informal social event – a chance for you to learn about their cultures and countries, and for them to meet “real” Americans. These international visitors from Cambodia, Croatia, Grenada, Nicaragua, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turkey are all working with young people. Their backgrounds are varied – ranging from a documentary film maker with Al Jazeera, to working with the Roma and indigenous people, to running government programs that encourage civic participation and awareness among youth, to encouraging teens and young adults of all political ideologies and religious backgrounds to unite for common causes and national unity. Hear about the impact of this program at the local and international level, while giving a warm Minnesota welcome to these visitors. Remember this is a program for MIC members only – but you are welcome to bring a guest!
