SERMON NOTES The Two Faces, Paths and Responses to Testing (James 1:13-21)
James 1 talks the two faces of testing that believers face and how the gospel instructs them to respond
to it.
Proposition: By understanding the two faces, paths and responses to testing, Christians can
distinguish godly trials from sinful temptations and become proactive in defeating sin in their
lives with a plan.
Metaphors: The language of the text presents these truths with imageries of a coin, seeds, trap,
and light.
1. There are two faces of testing (From 1:2 and 1:13, the same Greek word is used for both
“testing” and “temptation”), with each side having an active and a passive function. Picture a
coin with two sides.
a. The test to faith/godliness (2-3, 12), coming from God to test our loyalty. Its intent is to
develop godly virtues and spiritual disciplines within us. Passive component: the implanted
word (18, 21), “seeds” that came with your spiritual calling & salvation. Active component:
perseverance (3, 12).
b. The test to sin/evil (14-15), coming from selfish desires, the world, or satanic influence.
Passive component: luring (14) is conjugated as a passive participle, resembling a snare/
trap. Active component: private desires that choose to conceive/germinate from the
“seeds” of our fallen nature (15).
Application: James outlines a plan for distinguishing the two faces of testing in a believer’s
life:
Christians have 2 “seeds” within them: 1) Seeds of the fallen nature; 2) Seeds of God’s
Word.
When tested, ask two questions:
Where does this test want to take me? There are 2 paths that testing takes you:
Testing to sin (14-15): seeds of fallen nature stimulated by luring (trap) produces
desires. These desires conceive and act in sin. In time, unchecked sin matures and
leads to death.
Testing to faith (3-6): God’s testing leads to perseverance that produces maturity
and completeness. Completeness brings God’s wisdom (a “single” mindedness
instead of a “double” mindedness in 1:18).
Where did this test originate? (This is answered out of the first question).
If directed to faith/godliness=from God.
If directed to sin/evil=from self, Satan, world.
2. There are two responses to testing (13, 16-18).
a. Play the blame game (13). “God made me do it.” Those who are deceived generally want
to act like Adam in the garden: blame God and others, not themselves.
b. Take proactive responsibility (16). Here, the original is in the imperative (command)
mode, telling believers “Make no mistake!” “Don’t go astray!” “Don’t be deluded!” A.T.
Robertson, Word Pictures of the NT, VI: 19: “The devil is a pastmaster at blinding
people’s eyes about sin.”

SERMON NOTES
HOW TO KEEP TEMPTATION IN CHECK/AT BAY 1. Doctrine: Know God’s nature (13, 17). He is the “Father of Lights.”
a. God cannot be tempted, nor does he tempt because he dwells in goodness and perfection
(13, 17a).
b. God possesses no variations, not even a hint of a shadow (17b). He himself is pure light.
2. Understanding (applied doctrine): know your identity (18).
God chose you to belong to him (18a), implanted his word within you (18b, 21), and made
you his firstfruits (18c).
3. Actions: gauge your outward behavior from your inward attitudes (19-20).
Quick to hear (19a), slow to speak (19b), slow to anger (19c).
4. Proactive responsibility (21). “Put to death yourselves” (verb is conjugated in the
middle voice and is plural). What Christians are responsible to do: Mortify/remove ethical
and moral uncleanness and evil, live in humility, accept the implanted word (the planted
seeds) and strive towards maturity.
5. Remember what Jesus did to triumph over testing and temptation (Matthew 4:1-11,
Hebrews 4:15, Matthew 16:1ff, 26:36-46. Draw strength and help from him as you
depend on the Holy Spirit.
“If God were not my true friend, Satan would not be my real enemy.” (Thomas Brooks, 1608-
1680).

WORSHIP SONGS AND HYMNS
Come Thou Fount Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount; I’m fixed upon it, mount of Thy redeeming love.
Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;
He to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be.
Let Thy goodness like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it; seal it for Thy courts above.
Every good thing ever given every perfect gift received;
Comes down to us from our Father, Stars from void His lips did speak.
Never changing, never failing all our joys from Him proceed;
By His will He shows His mercy saves us by the truth He breathed.
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
See, from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did ever such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all!
Mighty to Save Everyone needs compassion, love that’s never failing; let mercy fall on me.
Everyone needs forgiveness. The kindness of a Savior; the hope of nations.
Chorus
Savior, He can move the mountains. My God is Mighty to save; He is Mighty to save.
Forever, Author of salvation. He rose and conquered the grave; Jesus conquered the grave.

WORSHIP SONGS AND HYMNS
Mighty to Save (Continued) So take me as You find me; all my fears and failures. Fill my life again.
I give my life to follow. Everything I believe in, now I surrender.
Shine your light and let the whole world see.
We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus.
Shine your light and let the whole world see.
We’re singing for the glory of the risen King.
My Jesus, I Love Thee My Jesus, I love Thee; I know Thou art mine. For Thee all the follies of sin I resign.
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou: If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.
I love thee because Thou hast first loved me and purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree.
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow: If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.
I’ll love Thee in life; I will love Thee in death and praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me
breath. And say when the death-dew lies cold on my brow, “If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus,
‘tis now.”
In mansions of glory and endless delight, I’ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright. I’ll sing
with the glittering crown on my brow, “If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now.”
The Wonderful Cross When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did ever such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Chorus
Oh, the wonderful cross, oh, the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die, and find that I may truly live.
Oh, the wonderful cross, oh, the wonderful cross;
All who gather here by grace draw near, and bless Your name.
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.
Were the whole realm of nature mine; that were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all! (Repeat Chorus)
