Café ConversationsWednesdays, beginning September 7, 9:30–11AM in E105.Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost TheirMeaning and Power—and How They Can Be Restored isthe newest work of author Marcus Borg. This retired Hun-dere Chair of Religion and Culture at Oregon State Univer-sity shares that for many, Christianity has become anunfamiliar language. He contends that what we mean whenusing words and concepts related to our faith today is verydifferent from what they meant originally. Has our languagebecome a stumbling block to others? Why did this happen? How do we develop something different that is true to itsoriginal roots yet is attractive enough to draw into conver-sation today’s men, women, children, and youth seekingfaith? Come discuss this book with others in preparation ofDr. Borg’s visit to the Christian Theological Seminary and St.Luke’s the weekend of October 7-9. Book may be purchasedin Oasis Bookstore. Class facilitator is Dr. Marion Miller, St.Luke’s Associate Pastor.

MarshaHutchinson, St. Luke’s AssociatePastor, and Rev. Dan Motto, retiredUM pastor.

Class co-leadersare Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, and Dr. MichaelCondit, St. Luke’s member.

Where Do We Go from Here? Wednesdays, September 14-October 19, 7-8:30PM in Fellow-ship Hall. Pre-registration recommended, childcare avail-able upon request. Heaven and hell? Life after death? Theend of the world? Many of us have more questions than an-swers concerning these subjects. Movies, books and songsconvey "this opinion" or "that theory." How can they all bebased in scripture, yet be contradictory. What do you thinkabout these issues? If you have questions or just a healthycuriosity about these topics, then join members of St.Luke’s staff as well as Dr. Ronald Allen from Christian The-ological Seminary, and Mr. Donald E. Knebel, partner withBarnes and Thornburg LLP, for conversations around“Where Do We Go from Here?” Numerous references willbe cited, but two books of interest are Love Wins by RobBell and The Life of Jesus for Today by Ronald J. Allen.

Women’s Bible StudyWednesdays, September 14-November 16, 1-2PM inE105. Questions God Asks Us. We often look to theBible as the book of answers. How often, though, dowe consider the challenging questions God asks? Author Trevor Hudson notes that Jesus was asked 183questions in the Gospels but directly answered onlythree. In Questions God Asks Us, we're encouraged tofocus on the quest rather than a resolution. "I thoughtthe Bible existed to give me solutions to my everydayconcerns and dilemmas," writes Hudson. "Then I re-alized I might be approaching God and the Bible fromthe wrong direction. Questions God Asks Us offers afresh approach for personal devotions and a uniquediscussion tool for Bible study. It's sure to bless any-

one longing for a meaningful, growing relationship with God.Terri Coe, Director of Adult Ministries, is class facilitator.

What Did You Say?If you find yourself saying that more frequently than youused to, then stop by the Free Hearing Screening on Sunday,October 2 from 9-11AM in C110. Hearing loss is one of themost common chronic health care problems facing olderadults. More than 55 million Americans are estimated tosuffer from hearing loss that is significant enough to havea debilitating effect on communication, and 80% of thatgroup is undiagnosed or untreated. As our population con-tinues to age, the problem of hearing loss continues togrow. Recent studies show that up to 50% of Baby Boomersare experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20years earlier in life than prior generations. What about you?Have your hearing checked for free, courtesy of St. Luke’sHealth Ministries

Blood DriveDid you know:• Blood cannot be manufactured; it can only come from

volunteer donors. • An estimated five million patients in the U.S. need

blood every year, with many of these patients usinglarge quantities of units.

• The volume of blood transfused is increasing at the rateof six percent per year. In war and disasters, the needsrise even higher.

• Adults have around 10 pints of blood in their body. One pint is given during donation.

• Whole blood donors can donate every 56 days. • One pint of blood can save up to three lives. If you

began donating at age 17 and donated every 56 daysuntil you reached 76, you would have donated 48 gal-lons of blood, potentially helping to save more than1,000 lives!

• Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusionin the U.S.

• Platelets, critical for cancer patients, have a shelf lifeof only five days.

• Only seven percent of people in the U.S. have the universal blood donor type, O negative.

• Less than 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood.

• Donor information is confidential. It may not be released to anyone without your written permission, except as directed by law.

Help save lives at our next Indiana Blood Center BloodDrive which will be held at St. Luke’s on Sunday, October16, before, during and after morning worship services.
