VANCOUVER, British Columbia —Radial Engineering Ltd. is pleased toannounce the Firefly tube direct box, afully discrete class-A unity gain ampli-fier ideally suited for diverse live per-formance applications. Radial companypresident Peter Janis explains, "Thistube DI has been in our plans for sometime now. We are pleased to bring theFirefly to the market. Its unique fea-tures and always reliable Radial buildquality make this DI an essential in anyaudio engineer's or musician's tool kit."

The Firefly begins with two inputs, each of which features a separate levelcontrol to enable the artist to set eachinstrument with optimal gain. Switch-ing between inputs can be can be doneusing the front panel switch or via theoptional JR2 remote footswitch. The in-strument signal is immediately routedto a tuner output that is always on.When used with the JR2 footswitch, theFirefly may also be muted remotely forquiet on-stage tuning. Both thefootswitch and front panel are equippedwith LED indicators for status monitor-ing.

Following the award winning Ra-

dial JDV, the Firefly's front end circuitis 100 percent discrete class-A and isvoid of any circuit stabilizing negativefeedback. This produces a more open, less constricted sound. The Firefly isalso equipped with Drag Control loadcorrection that enables the artist to ad-just the load on the magnetic pickup fora much more natural rendering. Whenbypassed, the load jumps to 4 meg-ohms enabling the Firefly to be usedwith piezo pickups such as commonwith upright bass and other acoustic in-struments. The exceptional warmth anddetail is achieved by combining Ra-dial's unique front end with an allnew12AX7 tube drive circuit. Contrast-ing the input sensitivity with the outputdrive enables the artist to fine tune thegrit or edge to give the sound morecharacter. And to add even more fun,the Firefly comes shipped with two12AX7 tubes, a select premium tubefor audiophile performance and a low-fi version for added growl.

As the Firefly will likely become afavorite with acoustic instruments, afully variable high-pass filter has beenadded that enables the engineer to set

the bass cut-off frequency for optimallayering. This 'Nashville trick' lets youset the cut-off to better match the sizeof the instrument whereby a lower cut-off would be used on contrabass, slightly higher on acoustic and higheragain on fiddle or mandolin. By settinga different cut-off for each instrumentone can eliminate resonance while stillretaining the character. The result is abetter sounding mix.

Connectivity is extensive: The rearpanel begins with two stacked ¼ inchinstrument inputs. A second set ofstacked ¼ inch jacks presents the userwith a buffered thru-put that delivers ei-ther the original instrument's tone or theoutput from the tube circuit. Below, aninsert jack enables one to add in effectsin series with the tube drive circuit andapply the effects to the overall sound. The third set of stacked jacks feature atuner output and a TRS jack for the JR2

• Exceptional experience. The XT

a human scale interface they can explore, browse and control at their own pace andwhere their interest leads them.

How It WorksThe approximate 6 inch x 6 inch celltiles light up when triggered by thewave of a hand, responding to electro-static sensitivity and sends a signal to aPC. The sensing technology allows thecells to be placed behind a variety ofsurfaces such as fabric, acrylic or glassand still be able to activate. A graphicis printed or mounted on these translu-cent surfaces to help guide the userthrough the content.

The signal sent to the computer starts

a programmed function tied to that par-ticular cell; such as the playing of avideo. Other functions can include theplaying of an image with a separatesound file, a lone image, a lone sound, acombination image first then video, aswell as other possible functions. The usercould leave the current content or inter-rupt playback by activating any other cellthereby jumping over to different contentimmediately.

Content files are usually JPEGs andMOVs. Since they are simple to create insome basic authoring software, it givesthe system owner control over their con-tent. To replace it, only a basic under-standing of how to rename files inWindows; ‘drag and drop;’ overwritefiles and other basic file managementskills are needed.

ApplicationsDC Connect offers a variety of products intheir [i]connect line in addition to customconfigurations. Two of these are the [i]con-nect KIOSK and [i]connect DISPLAY.

efficiency capable of an average107 dBfrom 1.4 to 20 KHz. The minimum rec-ommended crossover frequency is at 1.7KHz, with a nominal power rating of40W and a maximum of 80W. It is suitedfor medium and small sized two-way en-closures and in line arrays, coupled witha woofer not over 12 inch. The HF105represents the ferrite version of theHF104 neodymium driver already on cat-alog and it brings forth excellent mechan-ical and acoustic characteristics from theoriginal version. While achieving aslightly different tonality through its op-timized ferrite magnet assembly.

HF107 Compression DriverThe second new model in the high fre-quency range measures 120 millimetersin diameter.

To all effects, it is the ‘big brother’

of the HF105. This is the HF107 Com-pression Driver, presented in ‘final pro-totype’ version at the moment of theProLight+Sound 2012, but already beingput though the industrialization produc-tion process and will shortly afterwardsbe available on catalog. It is a ferritecompression driver with a 44 millimetervoice coil, a Ketone Polymer ring di-aphragm structure coupled with an inno-vative single slot annular phase plug. Theaverage efficiency level is at 109 dB from800 Hz to 20KHz, the recommendedminimum crossover frequency is at1KHz and the nominal power at 70Wwith a maximum power of 140W.

The HF107 is recommended in 2-way applications of a certain ‘impor-tance’, or powerful line arrays with a 12inch / 15 inch woofer. Its weight is at 2.4kilograms. A lot of care was taken in thestudy of the single slot annular phaseplug in order to guarantee excellent reg-ularity in the response on the whole band-

width while keeping an excellent exten-sion towards the high frequencies.

FD371 Bullet Driver, complete withaluminum hornThe FD371 model is a Bullet Driver anddifferently from the two just describedabove, it comes with a frontal aluminumhorn, so this driver is ready to be used insound enclosures right out of the box. In-corporating a ferrite magnet assembly, a37 millimeter voice coil, Ketone Polymerring diaphragm, horn loaded with centralogive; it has an average efficiency of 107dB on a frequency range from 2.5 to 20KHz, with an impressive minimumcrossover frequency at 2.5 KHz. Nominalpower rating is at 35W with a maximumpower at 70W maximum, with a nominaldirectivity of 40 degree conical. It boastsa very extended response on the High’swith greatly controlled directivity also atthe highest frequencies. It can be em-ployed in multiple way applications, even

with very high crossovers (5, 6, 7 KHz)and it is optimal for medium sized 2-waysystems as well, given that it may be useddown to very low frequencies for the typeof product.

This means having a strong advan-tage in comparison to competitors whosecorresponding product also needs to beused together with the support of amidrange driver, whereas in the case ofthe FD371 it is enough to team it to awoofer capable of reproducing just themid-low frequencies.

Weight is contained, regardless of the useof a ferrite magnet: 1.2 kilograms. Thesize of the frontal squared flange withrounded corners is 102 millimeters.

The horn and the ogive have beenpurposely studied to perform an acousticload that extends as much as possible to-wards the low frequencies, while main-taining good control of directivity towardsthe higher and uppermost frequencies.

for AV products?

A: Starin is effectively a system compo-nent supplier support system. We thinkbeyond the product itself. We know howour components suit applications andwork. With a 360 degree view, we workto be a resource at every point of the in-tegrator’s project lifecycle and for thatmatter the on-going service to their endclient. This past year saw the reorgani-zation of our sales support resources tonot only provide the field rep engage-ment we’ve been known for at the inte-grator’s place of business. We addedChannel Sales managers who offer spe-cific application assistance, TechnicalMarketing Engineer with CTS-D levelguidance for consultants & designers, along with Sales Administrators that

proactively keep integrators informed. Itis not unusual that we are having dozensof GoToMeeting web trainings or justquick huddles every week helping inte-grators on specific interests. We havefound people do not want information, until they need it and we’ve geared ourresources to do that. The bottom line iswe know our valued integrators have amultitude of choices… from buying di-rect from a manufacturer to AV andnow IT distributors. We want to pro-vide a value. Things like being the firstdistributor to have the new AV IQ fromInfoComm integrated into our platformwill help us all get smarter and faster. It’s being introduced in our Booth#C6023.

Q: Please tell us about the key productor program initiatives.

A: Wow! Oh that’s an exclamation and

a solution. Wireless AV is a major ini-tiative for us, as we believe it is for theindustry. Our partners have become AV-Over-IT integrators and are into theUnified Communications convergence,as well as effective in room collabora-tion. Barco, known for high-end spe-cialty product, selected us to developthe market for their first broad marketsolution, ClickShare. As wireless AV, itprovides a much more productivemeans for clients to collaborate. It is in-genious in its simplicity and elegance.Wow Vision gets into wireless interac-tivity with an expanded set of featuresnow and a new point of entry. Revolabs,Sony, CAD, Telex and AV Essentials(formerly Gentner ALS) round out ourwireless audio offer. Did I mention ourBooth number is C6023?

Q: What have been your company’schallenges?

STARIN(continued from page 1)

A: In addition to our sales support re-sources, our Customer Service Repsreact to the immediate needs as peopleinquire. They are trained professionals. At times the support our customers needhas been overwhelming… a problem ofgrowth. I am happy we have continuedto adjust, to add to our Customer Serviceteam. We expect our integrators will no-tice the increased Starin sense of ur-gency and attention to their needs.Otherwise, we share the same challengeof our partners; to prove how AV com-munications can meaningfully impactand improve an organization. Withstrong business cases, methods to tech-nology adoption and being a significantpart of the Learning Organization andCommunications Ecosystem, we all willgo from surviving to thriving. And youcan guess we’re ready to talk about howwe can do that together in Booth#C6023.

directional versions, the new Country-man H6 Headset features the same mi-crophone capsule that established theCountryman E6 Omni Earset Mic as anindustry favorite. The new H6 providestransparent, natural sound pick-up withan extremely low profile capsule at just2.5 millimeters in diameter—roughly thesize of a No. 2 pencil lead. With its highdynamic range and flat 20 Hz to 20 kHzfrequency response, the new H6 is per-fect for a wide range of applications.

As anyone who’s ever worn a head-set microphone will attest, a secure, com-fortable fit that isn’t distracting is crucialfor performance and presentation. In thisregard, the new H6 Headset Microphone

excels. The microphone employs a light-weight adjustable headframe that staysperfectly in place. Available in four col-ors—light beige, tan, cocoa and black—to match a wide range of skin tones, theH6 blends seamlessly and is virtually in-visible when worn.

When working under the hot lights ofa theatrical or broadcast environment, per-spiration can wreak havoc on the perform-ance of miniature microphones. Not so withthe H6. The H6 provides excellent moistureresistance: the entire headset can be placedunderwater without being damaged. Fur-ther reinforcing this microphone’s first-ratewater resistant performance is the fact thatthe microphone’s cable detaches at theheadset and employs a new double-sealedwatertight connector.

The H6 Headset Microphone’s cable

carries additional benefits—key amongthem is its strength. The slim, 1.2 mil-limeter cable offers a break strength ex-ceeding 44 pounds, (20 kilograms)—anattribute that is certain to be appreciatedby theatrical performers who frequentlychange costumes and frequently ‘pull’ thecable up from underneath wardrobe. Thisinterchangeable cable is also the interfaceto a myriad of wireless microphone sys-tems. Switching among different wirelesstransmitter packs is as easy as swappinga cable. The new H6 and its various ca-bles interface to nearly all wireless trans-mitters, digital recorders or XLR micinputs with phantom power.

Chris Countryman, President of Coun-tryman Associates, commented on the com-pany’s new H6 Headset Microphone, “Thenew H6 delivers exceptional audio quality,

rugged build quality, superior fit for com-fortable, distraction-free performance andthe ability to interface with a wide range ofwireless equipment. It’s available in bothomni and directional versions, with the di-rectional version providing a tight polar pat-tern for excellent isolation from ambientnoise and feedback. With superior moistureresistance and its ability to be all but invisi-ble when worn, I’m confident this micro-phone will find many a home withbroadcasters, theatrical groups, houses ofworship, theme parks and more.”

The new Countryman H6 HeadsetMicrophone carries a MSRP of $670(Omni version) and $720 (Directional ver-sion).

growth rate over the past couple years be-cause it sets a new standard in personalmonitor mixers. We listened to customerneeds, helped establish a new market cat-egory and developed real-world solu-tions. As a result, myMix has become aleader. The praise for myMix is very con-sistent and confirms exactly what wewanted to achieve with this product:amazing sound, ease of use; versatility ofusing it as a stand-alone or integrating itinto an existing system; its scalability ofsystem size, the ability to record and playback in multi-track—myMix really doesoffer TOTAL CONTROL on so manydifferent levels. Any musician, at any per-forming level, benefits from myMix.

Everyone performs better because no oneis fighting for audio space.

The audio quality of myMix simplyamazes people every time they try it. Toour knowledge, we are the only companythat offers integrated stereo effects for athree-dimensional sound image. Whenyou listen through in-ear monitors, youneed effects: tone control and panning inorder to get the sound right. There is sim-ply no listening fatigue with myMix. Youcannot achieve this kind of sound by con-trolling an aux send from the consolethrough a wireless app. The success ofmyMix is in the details, and we paid veryclose attention to the details, which iswhy music schools, HOW, live bands andperforming arts facilities are choosingmyMix. It really does raise the bar for

everybody else.

Q: This InfoComm you are launch-ing myMix Control, a remote controlfor your personal monitor mixingsystem. Isn’t that a contradiction tosome degree?

A: Not at all. We heard from bigger in-stallations that they needed the abilityto control entire systems from one ac-cess point. Engineers from productioncompanies and theaters were asking fora solution to configure and back upcomplete system settings. (We havesome performing facilities with morethan 70 units.) We responded withmyMix Control, which allows engineerswired or wireless remote control of theentire myMix system from wherever

he/she logs in. myMix Control uses aweb browser-based interface to log ontoa myMix system through an Ethernetconnection or wireless device and al-lows configuration, lock-out and editingof all parameters within a myMix set up.Engineers could already listen to the in-dividual mixes—now they can log on,check and tweak the mix if one of theirperformers or musicians needs support.

We are at the point where we can saymyMix has evolved into a highly re-garded professional audio tool. Every-thing it does serves a purpose and addsvalue to the musical experience.
