Calcasieu Parish has gone through all of these types of systems

Simplex from the beginnining of radio communication until about 1974 when the first repeaters were used. In 1988 the City of Lake Charles installed a Motorola Smartnet trunking system followed by

the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (simulcast) and the City of Sulphur trunking system. The LWIN system is the system that many

agencies will be using in the future because of the need for interoperability between public safety agencies on all levels (local,

parish, and state.

INTEROPERABILITYInteroperability refers to the ability of

emergency responders to work seamlessly with other systems or products without any

special effort.  Wireless communications interoperability

specifically refers to the ability of emergency response officials to share information via voice and data signals on demand, in real time, when needed, and as authorized.

INTEROPERABILITY

Are we there?Almost, but not quite at this time. The SIEC has mandated that any radio programmed to work on the LWIN have a group of channels that is identical no matter what agency owns the radio. There are   channels for use by state, regional, and parish responders.

Motorola has developed a software package that enables a trainer to develop a Power Point presentation that has been customized for an agency’s radio configuration. This software is called the “INTERACTIVE END-USERS TRAINING KIT” GOHSEP has purchased this software for the XTS2500 portable radio and the XTL2500 mobile radio. Additionally, GOHSEP has plans to buy the software for the most widely used models of radios and make them available to agencies within the state.

Following is an example of a presentation for the Office of Juvenile Justice Services in Calcasieu Parish. This presentation was made to supervisors as a Train the Trainer and a copy left with them for future training sessions.
