    awards.

    About Commonwealth SharedScholarships

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are offered by the

CSC in partnership with UK universities. These

knowledge which will allow them to contribute to the

development of their home countries. In 2015-2016, over

70 UK universities are jointly funding Shared Scholarships

with the CSC. The CSC extends its thanks to these hostuniversities; while the scheme is managed by the CSC, its

success depends critically on their support.

    How can I apply?

All applications must be made through your host UK

university. You must check with them in the first instance

for specific advice on how to make an application and for

    their own closing date.

All Commonwealth Shared Scholarship candidates must

be selected and put forward to the CSC by their host UKuniversity, and must submit their application to the CSC

using our Electronic Application System (EAS).

Candidates must apply for a Commonwealth Shared

Scholarship using one of two methods, as instructed by

    the university:

    1. Via university: Applying to the university in the first

instance using the universitys own application form. If

selected, candidates will then be asked to submit an

application to the CSC using the EAS. Any applications

made via the EAS only and not directly to the university

first will not be considered.2. EAS only:Applying to both the university and the CSC

at the same time using the EAS.

Each university has its own closing date for applications. Any

applications received after this date will be deemed ineligible.

The table on pages 5-6 indicates the method of

application and closing date for each university.

Candidates may apply to more than one university, but

only one offer of a Shared Scholarship may be accepted.

The EAS will close to applicants on16 April 2015and no

further applications can be submitted after that date.

Candidates should note that most university closing dates

fall before 16 April and you must submit your application

by the date advised by the university to which you are

    applying.

    The selection process

Candidates are recruited and selected by UK host universities

in the first instance. Selection criteria include: the academic

merit of the candidate, as well as the likely impact of theirwork on the development of their home country.

Host UK universities must forward details of their selected

candidates to the CSC by 30 April 2015. Universities will

inform candidates of their results by July 2015.

    General conditions of award

Applicants should be aware of the following general conditions:

The CSC reserves the right to publish the names ofcandidates selected for awards on the CSC website.

By applying for an award, the candidate gives consent

for such publication in the event that his/her application

    is successful.

Candidates will be notified of their provisional selection

for a Shared Scholarship by their host university, after

the CSC has checked that they meet the eligibility

    requirements of the scheme.

A formal confirmation of the award will be issued when

all conditions set by the host UK university have been

met and when all documentation issued by the CSC

    has been returned.

The CSC requires a medical report to be completedand submitted before an award can be confirmed.

Scholars are expected to take up the award from the

date stated by the CSC when the award is confirmed.

Candidates are required to sign a declaration confirming

that they are nationals of a Commonwealth developing

country, and not at present living or studying in a

developed country; have not undertaken studies lasting

one year or more in a developed country; are

themselves, or through their families, unable to pay to

study in the United Kingdom; and will return to their

home country as soon as their award comes to an end.

Any false declarations will cause at least the CSCsshare of the award to be terminated, even if the course

of study has started. In such circumstances, the

candidate will be required to refund any payments

made by the CSC in connection with the award.

A Commonwealth Shared Scholarship covers fees,

fares and personal maintenance. Similar awards may

    not be held concurrently.

Scholars are expected to reside in the UK throughout

their award, and to seek prior approval for any

    proposed visits abroad.

Scholars may not undertake paid employment during

    their award without prior consent.

The CSC will only consider requests to extend leave to

remain in the UK after the end of a Scholarship for

those wishing to move from Masters to PhD study.

    Strict conditions apply.

The CSC is therefore be unable to provide any letter

of support which might be required by a Scholar to

stay on to work or undertake postdoctoral study in

    the UK.

All terms and conditions of award are subject to UK

local law and practices, and are subject to change by

    the CSC.

All regulations concerning immigration and visas are

set by the UK immigration authority, and are subject tochange. The CSC has no control over these.

    Candidates from Commonwealth countries which

require a Tier 4 visa to come to the UK for study may

be required to take an approved English language test

and/or be screened for tuberculosis in order to obtain

their visa. The regulations on this could change at any

point. Candidates should check the UK Visas and

    Immigration website at www.gov.uk/browse/visas-

    immigration/study-visasfor updates.

Candidates studying certain subjects may need to

apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme

(ATAS) certificate before applying for a UK visa. UKhost universities will advise candidates who require an

ATAS certificate on how to apply. For more information

and to check which courses require clearance, visit
