Getting to know Standard RI1

The RI1 Anchor Standard states that students will:

RI= Reading Informational Text

Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing

or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

In the following slide you will see how Reading Standard 1 progresses in Grades 6-8.

Grades 5 and 9 have also been included so that you can see what was expected of your students in the previous grade as well as what is expected in the next grade.

The underlined segments are the new focus for each grade level.

The RI10 Anchor Standard states that students will:

Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and

proficiently.

Progression of the Common Core Standards RI10 Grades 5-9

By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 4-5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction at the high end of the grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
