Common Core State Standards Initiative

A Fundamental Shift Toward College and Career Readiness in K-12 EducationWelcome and thank you.

This is an overview of the California Common Core State Standards

Generate questions for you to ask at your site about implementation and roll out

1The New StandardsThe new standards emphasize building analytical-thinking skills and applying what students have learned, rather than simply memorizing information. Its taking lessons in math and English Language Arts and showing students why these lessons are important how they apply to the real world.

With the new Common Core Standards schools will be emphasizing analytical thinking

This is in contrast of what has been often done before with rote memorization

It is taking lessons and applying them to real world situations and why they are important2How well has the current process served students in the real world? Why we need Common Core

Video I choose C

This video is to demonstrate the lack of preparedness students have when entering the work force many students have been leaving our school system with.

We can no longer prepare students to answer questions relying on a-d answers. We cant have them count on having their classmates always there to help them with answers.

3Common Core DesignAre aligned with college and work expectationsAre globally aligned to be competitiveAre clear, understandable and consistentAre evidence-basedInclude rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills and critical thinking The Design of Common Core is very simple

They are aligned with college and work expectations

They are to be globally competitive

They have been written to be clear, understandable and consistent. When reading them you can see the strand of the standard from grade to grade

They have been written to be evidence based.

And lastly, the content is rigorous to include higher order skills to include critical thinking.4The Measure of Common CoreAn overview of the common core standards and why they are needed

Overview of Common CoreWhy we need it How it is designedHow will students be measured5Adoption of Common CoreCalifornia adopted the new Common Core standards August 2, 2010Fully implemented 2014/2015Schools currently rolling out standards6 school in Fremont receiving advanced training plus 3 High SchoolsOliveira goes Common Core Kinder- 6th 2013/2014

Adoption of Common CorePrior we have had our state standardsCurrently many schools are still working with State Standards

Testing of the new assessments have begun this year in some school districts2013/2014 Star and common core are proposed to be given2014/2015 full implementation of common core assessment

Some schools are beginning to implement Common Core nowOliveira is one of the 6 schools in Fremont receiving advanced training for common coreTeachers are receiving professional development on standards and implementation along with assessing and comparing those standards with the previous standards to identify what our next steps will beCurrently the plan is to move forward with Kinder and first transitioning into full common core standards for the upcoming school year.

Others grades will be assessing where they are in implementing the common core and where they will begin

6Why Students Need Common CoreBackground of the common core, the development, along with the assessments and where we are going with them

Video Link Clearer and Higher

This gives the background of the common core, the development, along with the assessments and where we are going with them

One of the mantras you will hear is Clearer and higher this refers to the standards7Current Adoption of Common Core

Green states = Common CoreBlue = ELA Common CoreThis map is the latest showing the states that have adopted the common core across the united states.

Green states have chosen to implement the standardsBlue have chosen to go only with the ELA (English Language Arts) common core Which at this time is Minnesota

The two states that have not adopted common core are Texas and Virginia

Alaska is showing itself as being one also, but is close to adoption.8Development of Common CoreCommon Core was led by the National Governors Association for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Developed in collaborations with:(Educators, school administrators, and experts)Feedback - example(Educators, civil rights groups, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities open for public comment)Common Core was led by the National Governors Association for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The exciting part was that the initiative was led by experts which included educators, school administrators, and experts in the filed of education and also in industry.

Once they common core standards were developed, feedback was sought.

Over 10,000 comments were submitted. Each one was looked at and considered when the final draft of the document was made.

Those who were included to give feedback besides the public were Educators, civil rights groups, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities.9The Mapping of Common CoreVertically articulate downward from college and career readiness standardsBuild in a logical learning progressions Focus on developmental appropriatenessMantra = fewer, clearer, deeperProviding rigor and relevanceThe Common Core state standards were developed in a backwards mapping from considering what it takes to be college and career ready.

Considering entry level courses, mapping was then done down from the 12th grade, then to the 11th grade, continuing all the way back to kindergarten.

This is to ensure that students coming up through their education careers will be ready for college.

The main idea behind the common core state standards is to provide

Fewer, clearer, and higher standards than before

You will also often hear rigor and relevance 10Rigor and RelevanceRigor Rigorous instruction prepares students to think critically so they can solve problems in unpredictable, real world situations.Relevance Students will remember learning that is connected to their own lives.

11Standards and GoalsSally Hampton background of how the standards were mapped and created for ELA

What are the goals of ELA Common Core State Standards? (02:49)

Sally Hampton Background information of how the standards were mapped and created for ELA

Created by Pearsons (a publishing company) Called What are the goals of ELA Common Core State Standards12College and Career ReadinessThis means considerable changesCollege and Career Ready for grade 11Ready for post-secondary technical job training. On track to college and career ready in lower grades

WhyAcross the nationApproximately 40-70 percent of new community college students are placed in remedial courses

To be able to compete globally we need these common standards

Big changes need to occur.

Students will need to become college and career ready by the time they are ready to leave HS

or

They will need to be ready for technical job training

This translates to being on track for college in the lower grades

Why are we focusing so much in the lower grades??

Nationally 40-70 percent of students need remedial classes when they enter college.

This number does not represent students that are below average in school now this number is represents the average student now.

In order for students to compete globally, we need to make these changes in all grade levels to get students on track to succeed. 13Assessments Previous and Future2012/2013 STAR testing only2013/2014 STAR and Common Core Testing 2014/2015 Common CoreTesting onlineTesting based on rationale and critical thinkingAI (Artificial Intelligence) for scoring using computer algorithmsELA will most likely be augmented by human judgment

There are two online testing systems that will be responsible for the assessments.

The tests are still in the development and testing phases. As stated earlier, some districts are piloting those tests and the feedback they will provide will be valuable in the future implementation of those tests.

April 8, 2013 Harvard announced they developed software using EdX that corrects essays. 14Testing ScoresWill result in temporary drops in percent proficientE.g. New York and TennesseeSome schools saw drops as large as 60%Most schools saw smaller, but still significant, dropsWill likely happen in 2014-15 with the first implementation of the new common assessments, if not earlierSchools beginning the roll out of common core to make the transition

Here is what we expect to see.

Schools are expecting to see drops in the scores compared to what they have seen when taking the STAR test.

Schools that have already piloted the test have seen drops as much as 60%

The question is that if schools start to implement the new standards now and students are tested with the old test will scores drop???

It could possibly happen although, the way in which to standards are written they are more rigorous so that students should be able to think about what a question is asking and not rely on test taking strategies as they have in the past. It is not to say that these strategies will still not be useful in the future.

For many reasons ;

Students need to learn keyboarding skillsIt is going to be completely onlineIt will involve more critical thinking skillsIt will involve more writing and explaining their thought process15The Smarter Balanced ConsortiumTimely results weeks not monthsSmarter Balanced assessments make use of computer adaptive technology, Smarter Balanced assessments will go beyond multiple-choice questions. Short constructed response, extended constructed response, and performance tasks Students to complete an in-depth project that demonstrate analytical skills and real-world problem solving.

California has opted to go with the consortium

The Smarter Balanced Consortium.

The positive are:

Timely test results there wont be waiting months any longer. So when the STAR was given in April parents received results in August.

Now it is projected in weeks, not months

It will be able to make use of computer adaptive technology for students that need those devices.

It allows for short constructed answers to demonstrate knowledge rather than just an a-d answer.

It also allows for an in-depth project to integrate knowledge that will be applicable to real world problems.

16Smarter/Balanced Consortium Purpose/Product Schematic

Smarter/Balanced Consortium Purpose/Product Schematic

This shows that there are two interim assessments. These are not being required by the state. It will be up to districts to decide if they will administer them or not.

The end of year assessment will be the test that replaces the STAR assessment17Assessments for Students with Special NeedsAssessments have built in parametersThey address physical, auditory, and visual needsStudents with IEPs will have criterion loaded into system before taking the testSmarter Balanced worked with experts in the field of student assessment, accommodations strategies, language acquisition, and learning disabilitiesThe Smarter Balanced Assessments serve all students -

Since technology is being used the incorporation of adaptive technology addresses all the needs, these can be Physical AuditoryVisual

In order to make sure that students needs were met, the Smarter Balanced Consortium worked with experts in the field of student assessment, accommodation strategies, language acquisition, and learning disabilities

Students with IEPs will have the modifications specified loaded into the data base for their individual needs prior to taking the test.

18Complex TextDr. Timothy Shanahan One of the most important features in the Common Core State Standards understanding and integrating complex text

Video - Common Core State Standards: Complex text and its implications in the classroom

One of the most important elements of Common Core is Text complexity

Dr. Timothy Shanahan who is one of the authors of our current ELA California Treasures adoption.

He explains in this video about text complexity and understanding how to integrate that information and how it is key for students success.

19Types of QuestionsSelected Response Depth of knowledge (Recall/Literal Comprehension, Interpretation/Application, and Analysis/Evaluation)Constructed ResponseStudents generated response (single word, phrase, sentence, number, or set of numbers)Extended ResponseStudent generated response with more elaboration of answers and explanations of reasoningTechnology EnhancedSelecting a point on a graph, dragging and dropping, or manipulating a graphPerformance TaskAbility to integrate knowledge and skills across multiple content standards (measure depth and understanding, research skills and complex analysis)There are 5 types of questions that will be featured with the common core assessments

Selected responseThis involves Depth of knowledge. Students will be selecting answers much like the STAR test. Constructed ResponseThis involves students generating a response. It will involve them producing that response and typing it in. It could involve a single word, phrase, sentence, number, set of numbers.Extended ResponseThis involves the student to produce a longer more details answer - They have to be able to explain their thinking and reasoningTechnology EnhancedStudents need to be able to interact with the technology This involves dragging and dropping, choosing points on a graph Performance TaskIntegrating the knowledge a student has from many areas to demonstrate competency. 20ELA Sample QuestionThe Old Lion and the Fox Word Count: 189 Flesch-Kincaid: 3.5 Lexile: 630L, grade 2-3 The quantitative measures place this passage at grade 3. A qualitative analysis shows the text to be slightly complex with a story that is easy to follow. This passage is suitable for assessment use at grade 3.

To successfully complete the item, students must infer how the characters actions help develop the plot.

This is an example on a 3rd grade reading passage

There are many ways reading passages are scored for readability

Flesch-Kincaid is listed as 3.5This means third grade fifth monthLexile common core rates in this way. It says that students in 2 3 grade should be able to read at this level.

Quantitative measure means the way we rate the passage (that is the readability)Qualitative measure is the quality of the passage (what things in the passage makes it more complex)

The next slide will be the passage for 3rd grade.

Students are asked to infer how the characters actions help develop the plot

You will hear the story and then be given choices with their explanation of why or why not they are correct

21The Old Lion and the Fox An old Lion had teeth and claws that were worn. So it was not so easy for him to get food as in his younger days. He pretended that he was sick. He took care to let all his neighbors know about it. He then lay down in his cave to wait for visitors. And when they came to offer him their sympathy, he ate them up one by one. The Fox came too, but he was very cautious about it. He stood at a safe distance from the cave. He asked politely about the Lion's health. The Lion replied that he was very ill indeed. He asked the Fox to step in for a moment. But Master Fox very wisely stayed outside, and thanked the Lion very kindly for the invitation. "I should be glad to do as you ask," he added. "But I have noticed that there are many footprints leading in. There are no footprints coming out of your cave. Tell me how your visitors find their way out again."

22Answer ChoiceWhich sentence from the story tells Fox that Lion wants to hurt him?

A. An old lion had teeth and claws that were worn.

B. He then lay down in his cave to wait for visitors.

C. But Master Fox very wisely stayed outside, and thanked the Lion very kindly for the invitation. D. There are no footprints coming out of your cave.

23AnalysisAnalysis: A. INCORRECT: This sentence from the story is a detail about the lion, but it does not imply bad intent.

B. INCORRECT: This sentence from the story is a detail about what the lion did, but it does not imply bad intent about the lion.

C. INCORRECT: This sentence from the story is a detail about what the fox did, but it does not give information that explains how the fox knew the lions bad intent.

D. CORRECT: This sentence from the story is the detail that the fox used to explain how he knew the lion wanted to hurt him.

A is incorrectThis only gives a detail but it does not imply the intent of the lion

B is also incorrectThis is also a detail regarding what the lion did; however, it also does not imply the bad intent the lion has

C. Is also incorrectThis is a detail about the fox. It does not give the reader any information about the lions intent or how the fox would know

D. Is correctThis is the detail that explains that the fox understands that the lion must have hurt the other animals going into the cave24Common Core Math StandardsThe Common Core standards provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers addition and subtraction multiplication and division fractions and decimalsThe standards stress not only procedural skills but also conceptual understandingIntegrating real world problemsOne of the phrases you might hear is a mile wide and an inch deep

This refers to our current state standards in particularly to our math standards

Common Core Math Standards have been designed to beFewerClearerDeeper

They are designed to give students a solid foundation in the skills before they are required to move on to the next skills

The common core standards are meant to make sure that students develop not only an understanding of procedural skills, but also a conceptual understanding.

This is where you have seen some of the introduction to having students being required to explain their thinking in math rather than just being able to come up with the correct answer

The common core also integrates more real world problems to get students to have the ability to apply their math skills and integrate them to real life situations

25Math StandardsThis is an overview of the Common Core math standards and what is expected , the development, and the implementation

Video - The importance of mathematical practices

This video will give an overview of the new common core math standards and what is expected, the development, and the implementation.26Sample Math QuestionTony wants to compare the total costs of buying and using these cars.

Tony estimates he will drive at least 200 miles per month. The average cost of gasoline per gallon in his area is $3.70.Tony plans on owning the car for 4 years.Calculate and explain which car will cost Tony the least to buy and use.

With this sample math questions this is something that would occur in real life.

Students need to be able to think critically about what needs to be done to make the comparison.

This is a sample question from The Smarter Balanced Consortium.

In this problem there are two cars with an initial cost. The problem gives the MPG with the estimated repair costs for each car

There is an estimated amount that the car will be driven per month with the cost of an average price per gallon of gas, and the length the car is planned on being owned.

Students will have to figure out how much it cost to operate each of these cars and make a cost comparison,27Process of Calculating Cost of CarsMulti Step ProcessGallons of gas needed per monthCost per month for gasCost per yearOwning it for four yearsCost of car and repairsAdding all costs togetherComparing cost of cars

This will be a multi step process for students.

They need to identify how much gas is needed for each car per monthThen figure out the cost per month for each car in gasFinally figuring out the cost for the year.

Once they have done that they will need to figure in the cost of the repairs along with the cars initial cost.

Comparing the final costs is the final step and make their analysis28Math and College ReadinessHow the Common Core was mapped and what students need to be college and career ready
