Information Ecology (Overall view of communities happenings)

Gaps In:a) Access to Civic Information

- “Most useful info” hidden away.

b) Relevance of Life Enhancing Needs - Columbia information heavily segmented

towards some groups and away from others.

- Uneven distribution and availability.- Established, and/or possibly uninformed

view of information landscape.

Columbia College is a private, nonprofit institution founded in 1851 as Christian Female College, the first women's college west of the Mississippi River to be chartered by a state legislature. In 1970, the college changed its name to Columbia College when it became a coeducational, four-year liberal arts and sciences institution. Today the college serves nearly 25,000 students through over 30 Nationwide Campuses, Online Campus, Evening Campus, Day Campus and Graduate Studies Program.

Many people know CRC for its research, but we do a lot more. We also offer community outreach programs to educate church groups, civic clubs and other organizations about our research and cancer prevention. In 1988 CRC purchased a six-acre tract of land just north of the Columbia Regional Hospital on Berrywood Drive. An additional 2500 square feet of laboratory space was added to the south wing of the building in July, 1988.

Our food bank is one of few food banks nationwide that does not charge for the food it provides. Our food goes to soup kitchens, emergency food pantries, shelters for the abused and homeless, programs for low income children and senior citizens, and rehabilitation centers.

Gaps in Non-profit communication

No clear way for people to get involved.

Most of the non-profits have websites for their orgs, but not a lot else. Within this many non-profits do not have well

developed websites making it harder for the public to take advantage.

and do not always do effective promotions in newspapers and television

There is not a lot of information available about city government

GapsFor the most part, internet is usually free, but

those who do not have access must pay for their information when it comes to newspapers.

Television: For younger generations, internet is key to obtaining news/information that can be accessed at anytime, where as news stations on television is only on at specific times and may take longer to access. At any age, you have to map your time out to receive your news on T.V.

Page 42: Commies mapping

GapsRadio: On a broader level, to find out listings on

what radio stations are available in Columbia, internet is key. If one does not have access, then you are left flipping through the stations to find one you are looking for.

On a micro level, radio stations pick out information they find to be critical and may not be as informative as news stations, internet and so forth.
