• This class is a basic overview to prepare for the hands on portion of this training.

• Engine Company Commercial Vent Training– Will utilize 1 saw.– Minimum of two personnel but three is preferred.• Officer (required)• Sawyer (required)• Lookout/Safety (optional but recommended)

• 5 Points of Inspection Hole– Determine the roof covering– Determine the roof decking– Determine the rafter direction– Determine conditions directly underneath– Establish the type of operations that will be

accomplished

• Inspection Hole– This is a triangular cut

with each side approximately 12”.

– The first cut is 45 degrees to an outside wall.

• Smoke Indicator Hole– Determine smoke and

heat conditions underneath the vent team

– Assists in determining the location of heat hole

– Only large enough to fit handle of rubbish hook into

• 5 Cut Center Rafter Cut (5 Cut)– Simple to use and remember.– Identifies the structural members and allows for

the maximum size of opening between members for heat hole/strip cut

– The louvers do not fall into the ventilation opening.

• A single ventilation hole is a 5 cut.

• When several 5 cuts are put together they are considered “with construction” or “against construction”

• Vertically ventilating a commercial roof can be a very complex task. Utilizing Truck Companies is recommended when roof operations are needed on commercial roofs.

• This training provides Engine Companies the knowledge and skills to vertically vent a commercial roof when no Truck resources are available or are delayed.

• Hands on training:– Chalk saw station– Rafter rolling, smoke indicator, and inspection hole

station.– Full start to finish evolutions that bring it all together.
