18.16 Salient Observations:
18.16.1 Engine Performance:
i) The backup torque of engine is 12.99 %, under natural ambient
condition.
ii) The maximum power was observed as 11.2 & 10.7 kW under natural
& high ambient condition respectively.
iii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to maximum and rated
power was recorded as 225 & 217 g/kWh respectively against the
declared value of 275 & 270 g/kWh respectively.
iii) The maximum torque was recorded as 59.1 Nm against declared
value of 60.9 Nm under natural ambient condition.
18.16.2 Rotary shaft performance:
i) The maximum and rated rotary shaft power was measured 9.4 & 9.3
kW respectively.
ii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to power at rated engine
speed was measured as 257 g/kWh respectively against the declared
value of 303 g/kWh.
iii) The maximum equivalent rotary shaft torque was observed as 572.8
Nm against the declared value of 609.1 Nm.
18.16.3 Mechanical Vibration:
The amplitude of mechanical vibration on most of controls /
measuring points of the power tiller exceeded the limit of 100 micron.
The mechanical vibration is directly concerned with Operator’s Health, Safety and Comfort; apart from the useful life of the
machine’s components. In view of the above, this should be taken care for corrective action.
18.16.4 Noise measurement:
Max. Noise at operator’s ear level and by stander’s position was observed as 97 dB(A) and 79 dB(A). The noise observed at operator's
ear level is more than the limit specified by IS12239 (Part3) : 1988.
The Sound Pressure Level is directly influencing the Operator’s Health, Safety and Comfort; and therefore warrants the corrective
action.

18.16.5 Haulage test
18.16.5.1 The power tiller was recommended for haulage test with a trailer of
gross mass of 1.0 tonne.
18.16.5.2 Distance traveled per litre was observed 13.48 to 14.63 km.
18.16.5.3 Specific fuel consumption was observed 68.35 to 74.18 cc/km/t.
18.16.6 Puddling test
18.16.6.1 Puddling test was conducted with cage wheels and with hatchet blade.
18.16.6.2 The maneuverability of power tiller during puddling test was found
satisfactory.
18.16.6.3 On partial dismantling of the power tiller and inspection of the oil
samples from engine, crankcase, transmission case and rotary chain
case, no entry of mud and/water was observed in the rotary shaft
bearing cap.
18.16.7 Rotary blades:
i) The hourly rate of wear of blades for dry land and wet land
operations was observed as 0.12 to 0.53 percent and 0.07 to 0.31
percent respectively.
ii) Carbon and silicon content of hatchet blades do not conform to IS
6690:1981 (Reaffirmed 2012). This should be looked into for
corrective action.
iii) The dimensions at notation 'B' of the blade do not conform to IS
6690:1981 (Reaffirmed 2012).
iv) The hardness at edge portions of hatchet blades does not meet the
requirement of IS 6690:1981 (reaffirmed 2012). This should be
looked into for corrective action.
18.16.8 As per IS 12239 (Part 3) : 1988, “maximum safe speed” with trailer is required to be specified by the manufacturer. Necessary action may
be taken in this regard.
18.16.9 As per IS 12239 (Part 3) : 1988, balancing mass to be added to
achieve correct weight balance of the power tiller with various
attachments should be recommended by the manufacturer in the
operator manual. This may be examined for compliance.

18.16.10 Provision of spark arresting device may be considered for
incorporation in the exhaust system.
18.16.11 Two metallic labeling plates, one is pasted on timing cover & other
plate riveted on chassis at RHS of operator. Whereas provided
metallic plates should be as per IS 10273:1987.
18.16.12 It is recommended that the tyre should have the “Marking” as per clause 8 of IS:13154-1991.
18.16.13 The handle grip does not meet the requirement of IS: 11858 – 1986.
This may be looked into for compliance.
18.17 Adequacy of literature supplied with the machine:
The following literature was supplied with the test sample for
reference during the test :
Operator cum service manual and parts catalogue for power tiller
and engine in English in separate booklets.
However, it is recommended that the same may be brought out in
accordance with IS: 8132-1999 (Reaffirmed 2004)with inclusion of,
inter alia, the following: -
- Fuel saving tips.
- Safe operating speed with trailer.
