Code of conduct

The code of conduct arises from an initiative of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and ECPAT International, developed in countries of origin and destination for tourism. It looks for participation and commitment of the tourism industry to discourage and punish commercial sexual exploitation of children and adolescents associated with travel and tourism.Currently, international organization is set up as “The Child Protector Code”, based in New York, USA.HOW DOES IT WORK IN COSTA RICA?Part of the responsibilities in tourism is to contribute to improving the quality of life of the general population, and protecting the fundamental rights of children and adolescents in particular. In October 2003, the Project Code of Conduct began working for the protection of children and adolescents against commercial sexual exploitation in tourism industry, a Project of the Costa Rican tourism industry sponsored by the Costa Rican Paniamor Foundation in conjunction with the Costa Rican Association of Tour Operators (ACOT) and the Costa Rican Association of Professionals in Tourism (ACOPROT).Funded in its first phase by FUNDECOOPERACION (2003-2005) under its Sustainable Tourism Program, by Save the Children Sweden in itssecond phase (2005-2007) and with the input from COSTA RICA WORLD VISION.Actually the Code of Conduct is in a process of institutionalization, which has been assumed by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) as the leading tourism institution in the country, with the collaboration of the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR ) and the technical support of the Paniamor Foundation.
