Finding a job at 14 can be troublesome: too old for camp and too

young to drive, plus all those work permit restrictions real-ly whittle down the options. When faced with this dilem-ma, four local teens jumped at the chance to be part of something totally new – run-ning a hot dog truck at Cape Cod Beer, in a new venture called Cape Cod Dawgs. The four boys – Dylan Chagnon, Jacob Dipilato, Jacob Marcus and Nate Pap-palardo – are all 8th graders at Barnstable High School, and plan to share all the responsibilities of operating a Hot Dog Truck Business. Given that none of the boys can drive (yet) the truck will be stationed outside of Cape Cod Beer, adjacent to the brewery’s new beer garden, and will be selling traditional hot dog truck foods, includ-ing hot dogs, pretzels, chips, sodas, and walking tacos. Cape Cod Dawgs debuted on May 25.

It all started with a Craig-slist advertisement and some parents lamenting about how hard it is for kids to find a

job these days, especially at 14. So when brewery owner Todd Marcus considered pur-chasing the truck off Craig-slist, he asked his son Jacob to ask some of his friends to see if there was any inter-est. Three other teens and their parents agreed to take the leap. During the April vacation the teens stripped down the truck to bare metal to paint it and put it back to-gether so that they knew ex-actly how everything worked. Covering the truck’s existing

‘bubble gum pink” walls was essential! During that time they also did research by visiting other local hot dog entrepreneurs, such as Nick’s Original Coney Island Hot Dogs in Fall River, The Dog Father in Sandwich, and Frankenstein’s Hot Dogs & More in Wareham. Product research was done on-line and by visiting various local purveyors, checking prices and local availability. Name and logo selection was also done by the teens themselves.

Each of the teens has their own perspective on the adventure. Jacob Marcus, of Centerville, claims: “Before we started working on the hot dog truck, I never really liked hot dogs, but after visiting some of the best lo-cal places for hot dogs, like Nick’s in Fall River, they’ve become one of my favorite foods.” Nate Pappalardo, also of Centerville, explains, “I’m excited to have my first paid-by-the-hour job. It feels like that one step closer to being an adult.” Dylan Chagnon of Center-ville says, “I’m excited to be earning my own money. I’ve got to start working on my college fund, plus having my own spending money will be cool.” Jacob Dipilato of Marstons Mills added, “I’m excited to make

some money. It will be nice to have my own money to buy presents for my family, instead of always asking my Mom and Dad. Plus there’s this hockey stick I’d like to buy!”

Cape Cod Dawgs is an (ad)venture started by four Barnstable teens, selling Hot Dogs from a 1979 Grum-man Hot Dog Truck, at Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis. Not just a summer job for four local 14-year- old teens, this (ad)venture includes building the business from the ground up, including business planning, product research, budgeting and actually running the busi-ness throughout the summer of 2013. Cape Cod Dawgs will be operating outside of Cape Cod Beer on Phin-ney’s Lane in Hyannis on favorable weather days in the spring, and daily once high school is over for the summer. Opening Day was May 25. For more infor-mation please go to www.CapeCodDawgs.com or visit our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Cape-CodDawgs

have consistently for the past 5+ years, this year up 11.2% overall for the three regions (Cape Cod up 10.1%, Nantucket up 16.9%, and the Vineyard up 18.6%). This year’s spring bookings overall, however, are actually posting a 3.7% loss over last year, due primarily to the 6.2% decrease in spring bookings on the Cape, versus Nantucket’s 4.4% rise and the Vineyard’s 7.8% rise.

Homeowners listing on the website have increased their prices for the second year in a

row since the 2011 season, last year up 3.6% over the previous year’s and this year a modest 1.6% increase over last year’s.

A recent survey of real estate professionals with multiple list-ings on WeNeedaVacation.com reflects a similar assessment of the season so far. Blake Decker of Pretty Picky Properties, based in Brewster, states, “From our vantage point, the overall vacation rental market on Cape Cod is strong in 2013. While rates have had modest increases as compared with 2012, guests have booked their properties significantly earlier than in

past years.” Edith Delker of Edith Delker Real Estate on Nantucket reports that rentals have been considerably stronger than last year, as does Michelle Sylvia of Robert Paul Properties based in Osterville. Jody Sylvia of ERA Cape Real Estate in Yarmouthport commented that the booking season started out quite strong but slowed down considerably during March and April. She wonders if vacation-ers are becoming less tolerant of the bridge traffic, and the high prices that Cape rental owners are demanding. She cautions owners to be aware of the vast amount of competition they have and to be more disposed to negotiate their prices as the rental season nears and they

still have vacancies. Given the recent improve-

ment in the US economy, par-ticularly in the stock markets, it’s somewhat surprising that the Cape and Islands vacation rental market isn’t even stronger than booking numbers currently indicate. There is, however, a high inventory of homes to rent, and the website is continuing to activate new listings at a high rate, even at this late date in the booking season. Gas prices are still high, and it appears that many vacationers are continu-ing to exhibit economic caution when contemplating their vaca-tion plans.

About WeNeedaVacation.com: Since 1997, WeNeedaVacation.com has been providing an ef-

ficient and inexpensive way of matching vacationers and vaca-tion rental homeowners. The website lists more than 4,000 properties on Cape Cod, Mar-tha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. The WeNeedaVacation.com Vacation Planner also offers extensive information to the 175,000+ vacationers who use our site yearly, including infor-mation about beaches, events, dining, activities, and shopping. Our amazing staff collectively has over 100 years of experience as Cape & Islands vacation rental homeowners. We love the Cape and Islands, work hard to promote this special place, and proudly belong to 17 local Chambers of Commerce.

Works of Artist Karen Ryder Featured at Barnstable Town Hall Through 6/21

The “Art on Loan” program which displays the work of local artists on the meeting room walls in Barnstable Town Hall, features the works of Karen Ryder in the Selectmen’s Conference Room and the Town Hall Hearing Room, located on the 2nd floor in Barnstable Town Hall, now through June 21st, 2013.

Karen Ryder is an artist with a career in business development marketing management. When speaking about being an artist, “she refutes the claim that we must forsake all other pursuits in order to be a ‘true’ artist. Her business and personal lives feed her art and the process of mak-ing art provides a release from the more structured parts of her life.” She spends time sketching all around Hyannis during many of her lunch breaks!

Having made a conscious decision to pursue fine art in a more meaningful way several years ago, she built upon her interest of the human form to develop a body of work shared in a solo exhibition, Figuratively Speaking at the Guyer Barn, in Hyannis. Her work has also been exhibited at the Lore Degenstein Gallery in PA, Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cape Cod Art Associa-tion and PAAM. This July and August, her work will be part of a collaborative exhibition entitled, In the Moment, at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth.

The works she has selected to exhibit at Barnstable Town Hall are a selection of her extensive body of work in watercolor, acrylic and pastel.

Solstice Day Spa Receives 2013 Best of Hyannis Award U.S. Commerce Association’s Award Plaque Honors the Achievement

For the fourth consecutive year, Solstice Day Spa has been selected for the 2013 Best of Hyannis Award in the Massage Therapy category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).

The USCA “Best of Local Business” Award Program rec-ognizes outstanding local busi-nesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their custom-ers and community.

Nationwide, only 1 in 250 (less than half of 1%) 2013 Award recipients qualified as Four-Time Award Winners. Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each cat-egory. The 2013 USCA Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are deter-mined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

Solstice Day Spa is a full ser-vice beauty and relaxation desti-nation open seven days a week. A favorite of locals, seasonal guests and destination wedding parties alike. Congratulations, Solstice!
