8 Supporters of the independence movement councilors (Bildu)
6 Nationalist councilors (PNV)
2 Councilors (Azkoitia bai)
1 Socialist councilor (PSOE)
0 Conservative councilor of people´s party (PP)
Nowadays, the supporters of the independence movement are in
the power, and the major is Pello Bastarrika.
The Advisory Committees are these:
Financies
Equality, language and integration
Basque and youth
Culture, sport, festival and leisure
Welfare
City planning
Construction, and services and environment
Treasury, internal organization and contracting
In the year 1910 there were three political parties in Azkoitia the fundamentalists, nationalists and carlists. There were 10 fundamentalists councilors , 2 carlist councilors and one nationalist. The first Mayor of the town was Juan Joxe Alberdi and he was a fundamentalist. Azkoitia was a really religious town.
Fundamentalists: It is a religious belief based on a literal interpretation of the Bible, born in the North of America in coincidence with the First World War.
Nationalists: Aware of their nation and to build its own state and the best interests of his political doctrine, which proclaims the policy decision-making.
Carlists: An alternative line of Bourbon dynasty, who defended the Spanish throne. It had got a great strength in particular in the Basque Country and Navarre.
100 years ago there were 1 or 2 civil guards (police) these were Spanish.
Nowadays, the Basque people have got the freedom (right) of having their own police.
These days there is a “Ertzaintza” (local Basque police) headquarter in Azkoitia, in the district of San Martin.
But after the spanish civil war there was a “guardia civil” (spanish police) headquarter.
