Principle of ECU support Since the engines with electronic fuel injection became commonly used, ComAp has introduced a convenient solution for monitoring and management of such engines based on existing controllers InteliLite and InteliGen. These used to be fixed programmed and dedicated to a specific engine type, ECU or communication protocol. A separate module – I-CB (Communication Bridge) – was designed to interface InteliSys controller and ECU unique for its hardware or software features (e.g. communication speed). Due to great development on the side of the engine manufacturers regarding electronic equipment and amount of transmitted data from the ECU/engine, ComAp had to react promptly and launched new system of ECU support in the controllers. This new approach described below was started by the InteliDrive controller. Later on it was adopted by the InteliLite controller (since version 2.0) and nowadays is integrated into InteliGen/InteliSys New Technology controllers. The new way of ECU support provides above all an easy and fast way how to integrate a new type of ECU. Although the engine manufacturers often declare that the unit provides standard J1939 communication, after deeper analysis many of them appear to use proprietary data frames. Therefore ComAp controllers are simply reconfigurable for such specific units using an external file – Engine Specific File (ESF) – which contains all necessary information about transmitted values, commands and diagnostic messages. The contents of this file are downloaded to the controller which can afterwards provide complete data monitoring and engine control over the CAN bus. The above described procedure of implementation of an ECU support ensures easy to use and fast configuration however it doesn’t reduce the controller’s flexibility. The user should be aware that ComAp provides default configuration and the controller must be adapted and configured to particular application. Providing the most common adjustment doesn’t eliminate the need to thoroughly test the functionality of the installed controller in conjuction with the genset and other equipment and advice the end user about the way of it’s operation. Due to quick development in this area it is strongly recommended to check up ComAp web pages (www.comap.cz) for software and documentation updates ahead of carrying on with projects comprising electronic engines.
What must be done to support a new ECU? Lets speak about units communicating over CAN bus and using J1939 protocol (we will leave out specific units - using RS232/RS485 or their own CAN bus lines, Modbus). As mentioned above we cannot rely on ECU brief specification which states that the unit supports J1939 protocol but we have to study a comprehensive specification describing all details of data communicated by the unit. Only then it is possible to create an ESF and test it with the engine. So the necessary steps are in brief:
1. Study ECU documentation 2. If the ECU is fully compatible with SAE J1939-71, an ESF for “Standard J1939 engine” can be
used 3. If the ECU is sufficiently but not fully consistent with SAE J1939-71, a new ESF has be created in
ComAp 4. The controller with new ESF has to be tested with the engine/ECU (without testing the functionality
is only theoretical – operating conditions of ECUs can vary a lot (for example sequence of activating/deactivating of ECU inputs during starting/stopping of the engine))
What data can be transmitted to/from ECU? There are generally four types of data communicated between the controller and ECU:
1. Values read from the ECU (e.g. Engine coolant temperature, Lube oil pressure) 2. Values/parameters written to ECU (e.g. Speed control, Frequency select) 3. Commands written to ECU (e.g. Start/Stop, Fault reset) 4. Fault codes
All of these are listed in the following chapters of this document.
What is an ESL file? ESL (ECU Specification List) file contains list of all supported ECUs and so list of ESF available for a given controller. This list appears in LiteEdit/DriveConfig/GenConfig as a list of available engine/ECU types. The ESL file also defines communication/diagnostic protocol used in the ECU.
How to import ESF-ESL package? The “ECU list-x.y” package can be downloaded from ComAp website and imported into a PC tool in the same way as a standard firmware package (menu Options – Import firmware). It has the same file extension (*.iwe / *.igc / *.idc). It can also be part of an installation package and in this case it is not necessary to import it separately.
Why ESF and ESL have different versions? Each ESF has a version which changes with each modification. For example if a new value or diagnostic message is added. An ESL version changes if any of ESF version is increased. It is not possible to issue a new ESF without a new ESL. In practice a whole “ESL-ESF” ("ECU list") package is released and it is distributed separately or included in the installation package of IL/IL-NT, ID or IG/IS-NT controllers. The configuration tools (LiteEdit, DriveConfig and GenConfig) enable to import this package with IWE/IDC/IGC extension as any other firmware packages.
What is default ESL setting? ComAp offers many kinds of controllers for various applications. Each our controller supports electronic engines, but the configuration PC-tool and its settings are different. Therefore we have various ECU lists
*except IN-NT MRS3, MRS10, MRS11 and IL-NT AMF8, AMF20 It is possible to use e.g. ECU list – Allspeed for InteliGen - NT or InteliSys - NT controller, but in that case be careful on the settings, because the default settings and some values might be unavailable or different.
What is the way of configuration? The way of configuration varies from controller to controller. In general a configuration PC tool is used to import appropriate "ECU list" package and on it’s basis
• select an engine/ECU type • choose values read from ECU from the list of all available values • configure values sent to ECU like Speed request • configure commands sent to ECU from the list of all available commands
1. Open Modify configuration window 2. Open ECU dialog window 3. Check “ECU engine is connected” 4. Select engine type and press OK.
Note: InteliLite/InteliLite-NT/InteliCompact controllers do not provide configurable inputs/outputs for engine values but the values are fixed in IL/IL-NT/IC-NT firmware. ESF is here used to convert ECU fault codes to texts displayed on the controller screen. InteliDrive – DriveConfig
1. On Modules card click on “ECU” and check “Used” 2. Select engine type 3. On I/O card configure ECU inputs/outputs
Note: Some values like Start request, Stop request have red background which means that these ECU values must have assigned a source value from the controller e.g. Starter, Stop pulse. This is checked by DriveConfig Consistency Check function. Note: In older versions of DriveConfig Lo and Hi limits of Speed request had to be computed according following formula: Lo limit = -100*[RPM-lo / (RPM-hi – RPM-lo)] Hi limit = 100*[(5000 – RPM-lo) / (RPM-hi – RPM-lo)] where RPM-lo and RPM-hi are the desired limits for the output value to ECU. In version 2.7 and higher it is possible to use calculator at analog output.
4. On Modules card click on “ECU” and check “Used” 5. Select engine type 6.
InteliGen/InteliSys-NT – GenConfig
1. On Modules card in ECU list select ECU type 2. Select ECU protocol in ECU Protocols list 3. On I/O card configure ECU inputs/outputs
Note: Some values like Start request, Stop request have red background which means that these ECU values must have assigned a source value from the controller e.g. Starter, Stop pulse. This is checked by GenConfig Consistency Check function. In the latest version of GenConfig the configuration of such values is done automatically.
Speed adjusting in IL-NT, IC-NT & ID-Lite controllers This function (speed adjust via CAN bus) has to support the engine ECU. Without it supporting ComAp controller can not adjust engine speed. Speed governor characteristic (setpoint Speed Gov Char/SpeedRegChar) has to be set to “POSITIVE”. In IL-NT and ID-Lite controllers the speed can be adjusted using ECU SpeedAdj setpoint. In IC-NT controllers the speed can be adjusted using Speed Gov Bias setpoint. For Volvo and Scania engines ECU SpeedAdj or Speed Gov Bias value is directly used to control the engine speed via proprietary frames. Other engines that use standard TSC1 frame to control speed and where requested speed is expected in RPM are controlled as described below. IL-NT Till SW version 1.2.1 engine speed can be adjusted according to following formula: RPM = 1200 + 15 * ECU SpeedAdj ECU SpeedAdj RPM 0% 1200 50% 1950 100% 2700
From SW version 1.3 the engine speed changes in the range ±10% around Nominal RPM. While the engine should run on idle speed the speed corresponds to ECU SpeedAdj = 0%. For example for Nominal RPM = 1500: ECU SpeedAdj RPM 0% 1350 50% 1500 100% 1650
ID-Lite Engine speed can be adjusted via ECU SpeedAdj [RPM] setpoint. You can predefine up to 3 engine speeds via BI Speed Sel1, BI Speed Sel2, BI Speed Sel3 setpoints, or use Speed Up, Speed down binary inputs. For more detailed description about engine speed control, see the ID-Lite manual or New features list 1.3. IC-NT Engine speed can be adjusted according to following formula: RPM = 1500 ± 10% Speed Gov Bias RPM 0 V 1350 5 V 1500 10 V 1650
Specific ECU/protocols Some ECUs do not offer J1939 like communication and so it was necessary to have a solution dedicated to each of these units. We recognize two groups:
1. ECU communicating via Modbus using RS232/485 (e.g. some Cummins engines) – with IL and IG/IS-NT controllers it is possible to connect such an ECU directly (without I-CB)
2. ECU with completely incompatible communication protocol and way of connection (e.g. MTU/MDEC CAN bus) – these units are supported with the use of an I-CB unit
Note: For details about I-CB refer to I-CB-ICBEdit-x.y.pdf manual.

Note1: ZDR parameters are a internal setting of MAN company. These parameter set the regulation loop in the engine ECU. For more information, please contact your MAN local distributor. Source = ExtValue Besides configuring the analog output it is necessary to activate binary input function ExtValue1(..4)reset. Therefore go to LBI card in GenConfig, in the list look for ExtValue1(..4)reset and select "Logical 1" from "Log Bout" as Source. This ensures that value from setpoint ExtValue1(..4)deflt in Force value group is periodically sending on the CAN bus as ZDR Parameters. Source = PLC oputput As a source for ZDR Parameters an output of PLC function can be used. For example use mathematic function and assign a PLC setpoint as one of the inputs (Resolution = 1 Dim = -). The second input set to 0.
Use PLC function output (here PLC Aout 1) as a Source for ZDR Parameters To change ZDR Parameters go to PLC setpoints and change respective setpoint in the range 0 - 7. Set to 0 for singlespeed applications. Note2: P-GRAD Drehzahlregler is parameter for setting engine droop. From this value is calculated real engine
droop. See the graph, there is a conversion P-GRAD parameter to real engine droop. The engine droop can not be set exactly – it depends on engine. The value lies between MAX and MIN engine droop. Source = ExtValue Besides configuring the analog output it is necessary to activate binary input function ExtValue1(..4)reset. Therefore go to LBI card in GenConfig, in the list look for ExtValue1(..4)reset and select "Logical 1" from "Log Bout" as Source. This ensures that value from setpoint ExtValue1(..4)deflt in Force value group is periodically sending on the CAN bus as P-GRAD Drehzahlregler.

Note1: For all engines Droop enable is applicable and enables droop value stored in the ECU. For singlespeed engines from ver.1794335 it is possible to adjust droop in two other ways (not combined): 1. Via binary inputs - activate Droop Adjust Enable, then activate and deactivate Droop Adjust Increase or Decrease to increase/decrease droop value by 0.1%, deactivate Droop Adjust Enable to store the final value 2. Via analog value - change Requested Droop value (see Note 3) To check actual droop value configure Single Speed Droop Value. Note2: The analog source value can be adjusted in PLC setpoint (a PLC function with analog output has to be configured first) or in ExtValueX setpoint (ExtValueXreset binary input has to be configured to logical 1 (on LBI card select Logical 1 as a source for ExtValueXreset) to ensure continuous refreshing of the value). ExtValue is not supported in ID-DCU. Note3: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) that activate “Red Stop Lamp Status” 1000 Overspeed B200 Stop because of high water temperature 1001 systém overspeed B001 Stop because of low oil pressure
3200 Stop because of battery voltage > 48 V E600 Stop because of command DLN1 - Engine Stop (with error code)
B101 Stop because of low coolant level All other DTC activates “Amber Warning Lamp Status ”

Note1: Besides configuring the analog output it is necessary to activate binary input function ExtValue1(..4)reset. Therefore go to LBI card in GenConfig, in the list look for ExtValue1(..4)reset and select "Logical 1" from "Log Bout" as Source. This ensures that value from setpoint ExtValue1(..4)deflt in Force value group is periodically sent on the CAN bus as Droop percentage request. Note2: As a source for Droop percentage request an output of PLC function can be used. For example use mathematic function and assign a PLC setpoint as one of the inputs (Resolution = 0, Dim = %). The second input set to 0.
Use PLC function output (here PLC Aout 1) as a Source for Droop request. To change Droop request then go to PLC setpoints and change respective setpoint in the range 0 - 10%.

On D12 industrial genset engines it's possible to connect stand alone connection. If there is a Comap panel connected via CAN bus during power up the engine will detect this and will be controlled via Can bus. But if the ComAp panel is dead during power up the engine and if there is connected a potentiometer on standalone connector the engine will detect this and will run in stand alone mode.
D9 and D16 have only possibility to be controlled via CAN bus.
If the engine is started with Comap panel and if the panel dies during operation the engine will stay on the same speed that it had when the Comap died.

Protection Override Signal In some cases the engine doesn’t shut down if a red alarm is issued by EDC3 as EDC3 interpretes the Protection Override signal sent from the controller in a different way. This can be proved by activating a red alarm on the engine (e.g. shorting coolant level sensor). If Protection Override is not active then the engine is going to stop after 60 seconds. Recommended Configuration – Protection Override: Option 1: With ECU list – 5.1 and lower configure binary output Protection Override to EDC3 with source value “Logical 0”. This ensures that EDC3 reads non-active Protection Override signal.
Option 2: Upgrade ECU list to version 5.2 or later, i.e. Volvo file version 3.0 and use default configuration. In this case no special configuration of Override Protection command is required. The controller will work with Protection Override signal = 00. Recommended Configuration – Protections on BI / AI: Additionally it is possible to configure also separate/redundant protections (in IG/IS-NT) on following signals read from ECU:
1. Binary inputs: a. Coolant Level Alarm b. Oil Temperature Alarm c. Coolant Temperature d. Red Stop Lamp
a. Coolant Temp b. EngineOil Temp c. Coolant Level
Switching between primary and secondary speed (1500RPM <-> 1800RPM): 1. Following output signals to ECU must be configured in GenConfig:
a. Frequency Select
Logical 0 use to switch to Primary speed, Logical 1 use to switch to Secondary speed.
b. Diagnosis Switch (is the same as Diagnosis Request)
Source value is for example binary input which can be switched manually on and off.
2. Switch off the ECU and controller 3. Set the Diagnosis Switch to be active 4. Switch on the ECU and controller 5. After 3 seconds after the controller is in Ready state deactivate Diagnosis Switch 6. Press Stop button to send Stop Request to ECU 7. After next start of the engine it will run on primary resp. secondary speed.

Note 1: If controller with CANNON9 connector is used, connect CAN H to pin #5 and CAN L to pin #9. Note 2: When the engine is running at 1800 RPM and controller can’t change engine speed to 1500 RPM, the fault is most likely in the engine ECU. Please contact your local Volvo distributor. Note 3: If binary output ECU PwrRelay is not available in the controller, connect pin #5 on Deutsch connector to battery positive. This signal activates ECU power supply so it can be used with key switch to power up the ECU only in case when the engine should run. Note 4: In IGS-NT use inverted ECU comm error output. It is important that there is no continuous active stop signal on pin 6. If there is a “constant” active stop signal a number of problems will occur:
a. It is impossible to change parameters. b. It is impossible to reprogram the control unit. c. The EECU could be damaged when power is removed.

Waukesha wiring recommendations Two MODBUS wires are available at the end of the Customer Interface Harness (loose wires). The two wires are grey and labeled RS 485A- and RS 485B+. RS-485 networking needs termination resistors if long wire runs are used. Termination resistors of 120Ω are placed across the RS-485 A- and B+ wires at each device and at the MODBUS master (IG/IS-NT controllers has jumper connecting this resistor closed as default). For short distances of 10 m or less and with slower baud rates (ComAp uses 9600 bps), termination resistors are not needed. Typically, short distances of 32 ft. (10 m) would not require termination resistors; however, if you experience communication errors, first check the programmed baud rate. ComAp uses 9600 bps which is Waukesha default setting. If communication errors persist, termination resistors may be necessary even for short distances.
Diagnostic lamps It is possible to configure Yellow Warning Lamp and Red Shutdown Lamp as binary inputs. Displaying of fault codes in the alarm list is conditioned by configuration of these inputs. Once they are not configured the alarms are blocked and not displayed.

Troubleshooting guide This table describes some typical troubles which might occur while using or setting the controller. We are not able to describe all possibilities how to solve problems, because there is a lot of settings and the ECUs are always under development, therefore don’t hesitate and contact your local distributor or write your problem on the ComAp support.
Sympton Possible solution
ECU doesn’t communicate with the controller
1. ECU is without power supply 2. Wiring between the controller and ECU is broken 3. CAN terminal resistors (120ohm on both sides) aren’t connected 4. CAN line has incorrect connection to the ECU connector / pins 5. CAN line has incorrect connection to the controller connector (CAN1)
Controller doesn’t show the ECUs value
1. That value isn’t available in this ECU (see this document) 2. Controller settings doesn’t have configure this value
Controller doesn’t show the ECU fault codes
1. MTU engines are using proprietary fault codes policy, therefore controller can show only configured fault codes (up to 16 fault codes)
2. ComAp controllers show all fault codes, but only some are showing in text form, others are showing as “ECU 000121 (00079h) – SPN 121 OC 2 FM 4”
The engine doesn’t respond to start / stop command
1. Start / stop command isn’t available in this ECU (see this document) 2. The “source” of start / stop command is incorrect 3. Start / stop command isn’t enable in ECU settings 4. Start / stop command is blocked, e.g. ECU’s binary input is set
Controller can’t control the engine RPM
1. Engine RPM control isn’t configure 2. The “source” of engine RPM control is incorrect 3. The ECU has lock control engine RPM over CAN line (unblock in ECU settings or by
binary input) 4. The ECU firmware doesn’t allow control engine RPM over CAN line
Engine RPM is different than the setpoint
1. The “source” of engine RPM control is incorrect 2. There is set the convert function
Controller doesn’t communicate with MODBUS ECU over RS458(2)
1. ECU is without power supply 2. Wiring between the controller and ECU is broken 3. RS485 terminal resistors (120ohm on both sides) aren’t connected 4. RS485 line has incorrect connection to the ECU connector / pins 5. RS485 line has incorrect connection to the controller connector / pins 6. Setpoints of the RS485 are incorrect
PC-tool doesn’t offer ECU described in this manual
1. Choose the correct ESL for used controller 2. Update the ESL / ESF database 3. Use the correct PC-tool for used controller
MTU -ADEC Controller doesn’t show the totally engine hours value correctly at new engine The engine has to be run minimally one hour
