Bullying is one form of aggressive behavior. It can be covert or
overt in nature, and is usually deliberate, harmful, involves a
power imbalance and has anelement of repetition. It can be found
anywhere in the home, at work, in theneighborhood and in school. In
school, bullying can vary in severity and impact. Most mild bullying
can be managed by students themselves with support, butmore severe
incidents will require input from senior sta or even investigation
by! "olice and#or $hild, %outh and &amily.
'ussell (treet sets high e)pectation that children will report
bullying. *t timesthroughout the year we also carry out con+dential
surveys with students fromyear -, to assist in identifying any
emerging patterns /and names0 that may beof concern, in an eort to
nip anything in the bud early. 1e place high emphasison providing
learning programmes that help students identify bullying, andenable
them to deal with it appropriately, and we engage with parents at
theearliest possible time where a child may be the instigator or
victim.
$yberbullying is now a real and rapidly growing risk. %es, it is
true that there isalmost always a better evidence trail /making it
easier to hold bullies to account0but increased access and activity
means that children are indeed more e)posedto risk.
2igital technology is central to young people3s lives and as
parents andeducators we need to recognise /and monitor0 the most
predominant form ofonline activity -social media. 1e also need to
recognise that young people areincreasingly using multiple devices
/desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone, gamesconsoles etc0 not only
at school, and at their own home, but at friend3s homesand other
places of gathering too.
I strongly recommend all parents become familiar with the
