TRACE TR-5The TRACE TR-5 5% phenyl column is anon-polar, low bleed column with a slightincrease in polarity compared with the100% methyl columns. The TR-5 column is a universal column used in a wide range ofapplications. This phase is extremely lowbleed with a maximum operating tempera-ture of 350°C.
ApplicationsThe TRACE TR-5 is a general purpose column, ideal for a wide variety of applicationsincluding alcohols, free fatty acids, aromatics, flavors and low polarity pesticides. The universal use of the TR-5 column is illustratedby the separation of substituted aromatics. The chromatogram shows excellent peakshape of all components and separation isbased on boiling points.
TRACE TR-5MSThe TRACE TR-5MS column from ThermoElectron Corporation is a silphenylene-basedphase ideal for all GC/MS applications. A low bleed column is especially importantfor MS as contamination of source compo-nents will quickly lead to a degradation ofresults and costly instrument downtime. TheTR-5MS column is a low bleed column witha slight increase in polarity compared withthe 100% methyl TR-1 columns. If theGC/MS is exposed to many varied methodsthen this is the preferred column of choicefor the instrument. This phase is extremelylow bleed with a maximum operatingtemperature of 370°C.
ApplicationsThe TR-5MS column is a universal columnused in a wide range of applications fromenvironmental semi-volatile methodsthrough to food and fragrance applications.Organochlorine pesticides analysis isextremely demanding and requires a columnwhich is inert and low bleed. The TR-5MScolumn is ideal for this analysis as shown.
The column is very inert (no active sites)thus preventing breakdown of labile compounds such as DDT and Endrin. Theinertness of the column also results in minimal peak tailing. This together withhigh efficiency results in narrow peaks andexcellent separation based on boiling points.

TRACE TR-1701The TRACE TR-1701 column is a popularmid-polarity column that sits between theTR-50MS and the TR-35MS in polarity. It ischaracterized by low bleed and high temper-ature stability compared with other similarcolumns. The cyano and phenyl groupsincrease polarity of the column while offeringalternative selectivity. This makes the TR-1701column especially suited for confirmationalanalysis when used in conjunction with acolumn of a different polarity, such as the
TRACE TR-5MS. The TR-1701 is ideal for pesticide and other environmental applications.
Similar to:DB-1701, Rtx-1701, HP-1701, BP10, OV-1701,007-1701, CP-Sil 19 CB
ApplicationsIdeal for many applications, the TRACE TR-1701 is particularly useful for the analysisof pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, organic acids,
drugs and steroids. The different selectivityof the TR-1701 column is particularly usefulfor the analysis of pesticides and otherapplications where a different elution order isrequired for confirmation purposes as shownin Figure 11. The analysis of organochlorinepesticides on the TR-1701 compared to theTR-5MS highlights the different retentioncharacteristics that can be achieved. Thecomparison of the different retention timeson the two columns greatly improves thereliability of analyte identification.

TRACE TR-WaxMSThe TRACE TR-WaxMS capillary GC columnfrom Thermo Electron is a low bleed, highlystable polar GC column. Generally, as polarityincreases, the column bleed also increases. This typically means that high polaritycolumns have lower temperature limits thanlower polarity equivalents. This not only limits the range of compounds that can beanalyzed by polar columns including waxcolumns, but also results in significantlyhigher phase bleed and more instrumentcleaning, especially if using mass spectrom-etry. The TRACE TR-WaxMS column hasbeen designed to improve on both of theselimitations by using a proprietary bonding
technique that produces a column with significantly lower bleed levels than otherhigh polarity columns available with anextended Maximum Allowable OperatingTemperature of 280°C. This stability alsogives it a strong resistance to water, makingthe TR-WaxMS one of the most versatile, sensitive, stable, and long lifetime waxphase columns on the market. This columnis ideal for solvent, flavor, fragrance, alcohol, ester and aldehyde analysis.
ApplicationsThe TRACE TR-WaxMS is ideally suited tothe analysis of aromatic hydrocarbons, foodadditives, essential oils, alcohols, esters, aldehydes and keytones. The low bleedcharacteristics of this column make it especially suitable for use with a massspectrometric detector, giving higher sensitivity, better library matches and less instrumentcleaning. Figure 16 shows the analysis ofylang ylang oil analyzed using a TR-WaxMScolumn. Even at the relatively high tempera-ture of 260°C, the bleed level still allowsexcellent detection and quantitation, evenusing a mass spectrometer.

TRACE TR-SimDistThe TR-SimDist column has been specificallydesigned for simulated distillation analysis. This analysis places a heavy demand on thecolumn due to the high oven temperaturesrequired to elute the higher molecularweight hydrocarbons. With a temperaturelimit of 400°C, the TR-SimDist meets theserequirements. The phase is strongly cross-linked and the stable bleed profile alsoallows for consistent background subtractionwhich is common practice.
ApplicationsThe example application shows the analysisof a hydrocarbon standard and demonstratesthe low bleed of this simulated distillationcolumn.

TRACE TR-FAMEThe TR-FAME from Thermo ElectronCorporation is a cyanopropylphenyl basedphase specifically designed for the separa-tion of Fatty Acid Methy Esters (FAMEs).The unique selectivity of the TR-FAME column provides excellent separation ofcis/trans isomers and FAMEs with variousdegrees of unsaturation. The maximumallowable operating temperature of 260°Calso provides versatility for the analysis ofhigh molecular weight FAMEs
ApplicationsThe sample chromatogram shows the reten-tion and excellent separation of many FAMEcompounds. Many FAMEs have very similarmass spectra and therefore identification ofunknowns can be difficult. It is important tonote also that the elution order of FAMEs isvery dependent on gas chromatographicconditions and even a small oven temperatureramp change can result in peak elutionorder swapping.

The injection port liner is an essential part of the GC instrument andmust be optimized to ensure sensitive and reproducible analysis. The injection liners from Thermo are highly deactivated, and producedto exacting tolerances to ensure the high level of reproducibilityrequired in today’s separation laboratory. A full range of liners isavailable for Thermo and other manufacturers’ instruments.
Thermo FocusLiner™ GC Injection LinerThe Thermo FocusLiner contains a quartz wool filter that improvesthe rate of vaporization, reducing the discrimination of high boilinganalytes in the sample. It also prevents non-volatile componentsfrom entering the column, improving sensitivity and extending columnlifetimes. The FocusLiner secures the quartz wool between tworestrictions preventing movement during syringe needle injection.
This allows the quartz wool to consistently wipe the dispensed liquid away from the end of the syringe needle during the injectionprocess. This results in lower carryover and greatly improved precision, and Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) of less than 1% can be achieved.

Septa and FerrulesAlthough they are small consumables for GC, the quality of ferrulesand septa are essential for chromatographic performance. Theseconsumables are in the flow path of the GC and therefore need to beinert, free from contaminants, and have tight dimensional requirements.
For this reason the septa and ferrules are supplied in contaminant-free individual blister packs, and one item can be removed at a timewithout risk of contamination to the other supplied items.

Septa and Ferrules
SilTite™ Metal Ferrules• Forms a strong, permanent, airtight
seal around the capillary column, eliminating leaks
• Ferrule and nut are made from thesame material and have the samethermal expansion coefficient
• Eliminates the need to re-tighten the ferrule after installation• Base of the ferrule is flat and forms a perfect seal with the
MS interface• Temperature tolerance well above the limit of the injector,
MS interface or GC oven• Available for most major GC/MS instrument interfaces
