Overview

• The three levels of transmission planning

• Overview of ColumbiaGrid and its activities inthe area of renewable generation integration

• Interconnection-wide planning to integraterenewables

Three Levels of Planning

• Individual Utility

– The bulk of the projects are developed at this level

• Subregional Planning Group (SPG) Level

– Plans transmission additions for a group of utilitiesin a region as if they were all one utility

• Interconnection-wide Planning

– Addresses seams between SPGs by planning theentire Western Interconnection as if it were oneutility

Status:1. 10-year plan in late 20112. 20-year plan in 20133. Will not endorse specific projects4. Funded by DOE5. Analyzing different levels of

renewable generation development6. Primary driver for new

transmission is the amount ofrenewable generation thatCalifornia will import

RTEP Benefits

• Increased coordination among entities in theWestern Interconnection

• Increased awareness of how energy policydecisions impact reliability and cost

• Ability to answer key policy questions at State,Provincial and Federal levels

• Additional information for use by decisionmakers in siting and cost allocationproceedings
