NATURAL VENTILATION

With sustainability and energy efficiencyin mind, many educational buildings aredesigned to be naturally ventilated.Natural ventilation harnesses the freelyavailable elements of wind and heat tomove air through a building. Naturalventilation can be effective whilst offeringreduced capital, space and running costscompared to conventional airconditioning.

Colt's natural ventilation systemsconcentrate on automatically opening andclosing windows, ventilators and rooflightsin a controlled manner.The systems canrange from a simple open / close switchto a fully integrated energy managementsystem, which could include carbondioxide measuring, internal and externaltemperature measuring, external weathersensors as well as interfaces with buildingmanagement systems.

Whether the requirements are for day-to-day ventilation or a combination of day-to-day ventilation with smoke control, ora hybrid system of mechanical and naturalventilation, Colt can provide the solution.

COLT IN EDUCATION - NATURAL VENTILATION

Colt specialises in providing tailored naturalventilation solutions for all types ofeducational buildings.

Colt Turret units are available in a wide rangeof standard sizes in Single bank or Doublebank configurations. Colt Turrets are availablein a complete range of finishes and materialsfrom standard mill finish and polyesterpowder paint finish to anodised and stainlesssteel.

Coltlite is a natural glazed ventilator forinstallation into the facade which can provideboth day to day and smoke ventilation. Itsform and function make it particularly suitedto educational buildings where good U valuesand low air leakage are required.

Colt systems are designedin accordance with BB 101.

Smoke prevents people from escaping and makes it difficult for thefire brigade to see where the source of the fire is. Colts smokecontrol systems ensure that if there is a fire, smoke is contained

and removed, allowing safe evacuation and fire-fighting.

Itis the normal means of compliance withBuilding Regulations for fire safety designin new school buildings and sets out theDCSF policy on fires within schools.

With Smoke Control Ventilation, thedetailed design guidance mainly relies oncontainment by walls and doors toprevent smoke from entering escaperoutes.Automatic smoke control systems

(triggered by an automatic detectionsystem) can achieve the same ends, byextracting smoke from the building.Thisprovides benefits for means of escape andalso facilitates access by the Fire andRescue Service. It is important to notethat most natural ventilation solutions canbe utilised for dual purpose smokecontrol with little design change.

Tanaka Business School, LondonWhen the Imperial College in London asked Foster and Partners toredesign the "black tower" portion of their flagship Tanaka BusinessSchool building on Exhibition Road in London, Colt were consulted withregard to the design of a glass louvred veil to conceal the existingconcrete structure, whilst allowing daylight penetration to thefenestration behind.
