Colours affect memory
• Colours is everywhere in the world• Memory will be effected by different types of colours– Warm– Light
• Statement of Problems– Difficulties in memorising information
Research Questions
1. Do colours affect human’s memory? How? 2. Does the presence or absence of colours information
influence the human’s sensory?
Research Methodology
• Triangulation of Methods• Document
Examination• Observation• Interview
Research Instruments
• Our experiment will be divided into 3 parts: – Examining memory on pictures which is in colour and
black-and-white. – Examining memory on pictures which is in warm colour
and light colour. – Examining memory based on the words appeared in
different colours.
Process of Research • 4 Experiments
• 30 Samples
• 20 Minutes
2.0 Literature Review2.1 THE METHOD OF CONDUCTING THE RESEARCH
- Images testing ( Two difference images will be shown and ask to recall what they have seen) ( Kim, 2010 ).
- Graphical presentation ( associate the colours and human memories) ( Kumi, 2013 ).- Black & White and colour photos ( The effect of the presence and absence of the colours)
( Uttl, et al, 2006).- Wording (various colour words ) ( Tavassoli, 2001).
Literature Review2.2 How Do Colours Affect Memory
Human memories (Sternberg, 2009 cited in Mustafar and Dzulkifli, 2010)
Short-term memory
(2seconds)
Intermediate-term memory
(5-8hours)
Long-term store
(last for long times)
Literature Review2.2 How Do Colours Affect Memory. Environment surrounded.. Attention (opportunity of the information to be stored in memory is higher) (Mustafar and Dzulkifli, 2010). . Arousal (emotional, physical, psychological) (Christianson, 1992).. Colour is one of the variables that has those potential; It can make a great affect the level of attention and give rise to emotional arousal, which is helpful in control processes that will later increase the memory performance (Sternberg, 2009).
Literature Review2.3 Outcome Of The Researches
. Images : the outcome of this experiment provides essential information in the use of colours and attracting consumer’s attention in generating working memory.
. Graphical : colour has the ability to increase human’s arousal and colour increases the recognition of the natural scenes by approximately 5%.
. Black & white and colours photo: pictures in colour are easier to identify compare to non-colour
. Wording : result suggested a consistent using of print colour can contribute to the maintenance of positive brand equity.
Literature Review2.4 Revolution Of Technology In Affecting Memories
. Newspaper Ex, advertising part.. Computer monitorEx, From CRT to LCD HD View. Traffic lights Ex, Red, yellow, Green
Literature Review2. 5 The Final Effects (Positive/Negative)
. Colour has big impact on our leaning process and memories.PositiveEx, Colours helped dyslexic people (people who cannot see white colour clearly) to enhances their learning process.NegativeEx, colour blind people.
Experiment 1:
• 30 randomly selected coloured words• 1 minute to study the words • Aim :
To test the effectiveness of human’s memory on warm coloured words and light coloured words
Experiment 1:
Experiment 2:
• A slideshow of 10 with a mixture of warm and light colours images
• 2 seconds interval per slide• Aim :
To test the effectiveness of human’s memory on warm and light colour images
Experiment 2:
Experiment 3:
• A slideshow with 2 coloured and 2 black and white images been presented
• 45 seconds interval each image• Two questions were asked based each image• Aim:
To test how well participants can remember the details of the images in either colour or black and white
Experiment 3:
1. How many balls are there?
2. What is the number of the first front ball?
1. What is the colour of the ball at the most left side?
2. How many green ball and yellow ball are there?
Experiment 4:
• A slideshow of 10 slides been shown with 2 seconds interval
• Each slide: 1 colour picture + 1 black and white picture
• Aim: To test reaction of participants in remembering the type of pictures (colour OR black and white)
