COLOR WHEEL MANDALA Art I – Milito
COLOR WHEEL MANDALAArt I – Milito
OBJECTIVES
SWBAT / I CAN…
• Visually represent the visual spectrum by correctly sequencing a 12 section color wheel based on color theory prior knowledge
• Visually represent tints & shades of 12 hues
• Use prior knowledge of line & shape to create a radial mandala pattern
• Make connections to self & world through understanding of mandala history & usage
• Reflect on key aspects of artwork through written artist statement
COLOR WHEEL MANDALA
• You will be combining a color wheel & a mandala for this project
TINTS & SHADE
• Refers to the relative value (lightness/darkness) of a hue (color)
• Tint
• A hue (color) mixed with white
• Shade
• A hue (color) mixed with black
COLOR WHEEL W/ TINTS & SHADES
MANDALA
• Mandalas are intricate radial designs made with concentric shapes, usually circles.
• Always radiates from a central point (radial balance)
• Can feature circles, squares, triangles, & multi-point stars
ABOUT MANDALAS
• Found in nature & many cultures around the world but mainly associated with Buddhism & Hinduism but can be found in other cultures throughout history
• Christianity / Western World
• Islam
• Native American / Meso-American
• Contemporary Art
BUDDHIST SAND MANDALAS • Buddhist monks create / construct intricate
sand mandalas by carefully placing tiny amounts of colored sands over a flat surface
• The process takes a long time, usually many days with the help of several monks (lamas)
• The monks meditate / pray / chant during the creation process
• After it is completed it is then promptly deconstructed / destroyed & swept away in a ritualistic fashion
• Symbolizes of impermanence of life

CREATING THE COLOR WHEEL
• Use pencil to LIGHTLY quarter the paper
• Mark the halfway point on each side (6”)
• Draw lines to connect
• Divide each quarter into thirds
• Like a clock
• 30 degrees per slice
MANDALA RINGS
• Draw the rings using a compass
• Start with the Inner & Outer Rings
• Inner Circle • 1” radius
• Tint Ring• 2” + radius• 1”+ thick
• Hue / Color Ring• 3”-10” radius• 1”+ thick
• Shade Ring / Outer Ring • 11” radius• 1”+ thick
ADDING THE MANDALA DESIGN
• Sketch the mandala design first & then draw the design over all 12 sections in black colored pencil
• Remember mandala must be radially balanced (the same as it radiates out)
• Each section may be different, but each quarter must be the same for it to
• You may add a shape / design to:
• Each section &/or every 2nd, 3rd, or 4th
section
ADDING COLOR• Begin with the hue / color (middle) ring
• Sequence all 12 colors on the color wheel
• Start with primaries colors, then secondary, then tertiary
• Be sure to create bold colors, so press down hard on colored pencil
• Use the color wheel for reference
ADDING TINTS• Add tints of each color to the inner ring
• Tint = color + white
• Use less pressure on the colored pencil to make the shading lighter
ADDING SHADES• Add shades of each color to the outer
ring
• Shade = color + black
• Shade evenly in black first over entire ring with medium pressure
• Go back over each shade with color
• Press done hard with color
• Shades should be darker than your hue
ARTIST STATEMENT
In a continuous paragraph, using full sentences, respond to the following. Be sure to use your art vocabulary, cite visual evidence from your artwork, & be specific.
• Describe the overall style of your mandala. Were there any influences?
• Explain whether your mandala has the same pattern in each section or has emphasis on certain colors.
• Describe what kinds of shapes & lines you used to create your mandala.
• Explain how you created tints & shades of each hue.
• Explain the process you used to create your tertiary color.
