Andrew Warhola’s parents immigrated from Slovakia, settling in an industrial area in Pennsylvania that relied heavily on manufacturing.

Andy was diagnosed with St. Vitus Dance, a disorder of the nervous system, at the age of 8 which kept him home from school for long periods of time.During his ample free time he began collecting movie star photographs and putting them in scrapbooks. He fell in love with Hollywood, photography, drawing, cartoons and magazines.

Andy was kind of spoiled. One thing his family got him was a camera in 1937.

Warhol attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). Before his career took off, he worked as an illustrator.

Warhol’s interest in Hollywood and popular culture carried over into his art. Warhol used cultural icons and political figures in his art.

“What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coca-Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca-Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca-Cola, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the cokes are the same and all the cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.”

Warhol created works of Pop Art, appropriating imagery from consumer culture and breaking the boundaries between high art and lower forms of visual imagery such as advertising and packaging.

Warhol created some of his most famous works from Hollywood promotional photographs and stills.

Taking the idea of multiple images and Andy’s use of color theory

We are going to create our own installation based on the works of Andy Warhol.

• You will create a series of digitally colored portraits. Your series must have a minimum of 4 individual portraits.

• Each portrait must be colored based on some concept of color theory.
