COLOMBO AIR SYMPOSIUM 2016 SRI LANKA
OVERVIEW
The Colombo Air Symposium 2016 will provide a venue for Senior Military Leadership and other
experts to discuss and examine in depth the present and emerging threats in the region, and employ-
ment of Air Power in addressing such threats. The aim of the Colombo Air Symposium is to bring to-
gether the knowledge of professionals and experts in various fields in one forum, in order to be better
equipped to face present and future Defence and Security challenges in the region.
With a highly successful event that saw the birth of the Air Symposium in 2015, which tapped
the academic intellect within the Sri Lanka Air Force, the 2016 gathering is set to soar into greater
heights. This years Air Symposium aims to enlighten the participants, reaching out to defence analysts
within the military, as well as outside of it including international participants, through active and inten-
sive deliberations based on the theme of Air Power in the Context of Regional Defence and Security

COMMANDER OF THE AIR FORCE
Air Marshal KVB Jayampathy WWV, RWP,RSP (3 bars), MSc (Int Rel), MIM (SL), qhi, fndu(China)
Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy joined the Sri Lanka Air Force as an Officer Cadet in March 1982 and was
commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the General Duties Pilot Branch in April 1985. Following a distinguished
career spanning over 35 years, and upon holding numerous Operational, Command and Staff appointments he was appoint-
ed as the Commander of the SLAF on 13th September 2016. He is a graduate of the RAF Academy, Cranwell and National
Defence University, China, and holds a Master of Science degree in International Relations. Air Marshal Jayampathy is a deco-
rated helicopter pilot having received the Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya the Rana Wickrama Padakkama, as well as the
Rana Sura Padakkama thrice. He was also awarded with the Desha Puthra Sammanaya for sustaining injuries in combat whilst
flying being the first SLAF officer to receive that award.
SECRETARY MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
Engr. Karunasena Hettiarachchi
Hailing from Polonnaruwa of North Central Sri Lanka, Engr Hettiarachchi is a Highly acclaimed
academic professional in the field of engineering. He received his Bachelor of Engineering
(Hons) at the University of Peradeniya and later earned his MSc from the University of Leuven,
Belgium. He has presented a number of academic papers at local and international forums. He assumed duties
as the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence on 09 September 2015.
PRIME MINISTER
Hon Ranil Wickramasinghe
Hailing from Colombo, Hon Ranil Wickramasinghe is a product of Royal College Colombo. He
is a lawyer by profession. Hon Wickramasinghe holds the distinction of being selected to this
office for a record number of 4 times. He is involved in active politics since 1977 and has served
as the Minister of Youth Affairs, Science and Technology as well as the Leader of the Opposition
prior to taking up the present office.
PRESIDENT OF THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF SRI LANKA AND
COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF ARMED FORCES
His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena
Hailing from Polonnaruwa of North Central Sri Lanka, HE Maithripala Sirisena was elected into
office on 08 January 2015. Prior to being elected he served in various ministerial capacities
including Agriculture, Irrigation and Mahaweli Development, and Health. He is involved in ac-
tive politics since 1970. He is an active advocate in the campaign against narcotics and drugs.
