Day 1: Innovation Ecosystem

• Dr. Yazid Abhullahi, Senior Lecturer specialized in company growth. Previously at Essex Business School where he was also the Programme Director for BSc Business and Service Industry Management and MSc Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. Yazid has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, book and presented papers in several leading academic conferences around the world

Day 1: Innovation Ecosystem

• Dr. Richard Anson, Senior Lecturer specialized in entrepreneurial activity and start up creation. Richard is an experienced Executive, Board Member and Entrepreneur, equally at home in both start-up and corporate environments. He is Entrepreneur-in-Residence at a retail and brand focused innovation hub, TrueStart; Non-Executive Director of Old Street Labs and Non-Executive Director of Reevoo, the business he founded

• Dr. Yannis Pierrakis, Senior Lecturer specialized in Innovation Finance, with particular focus on VC, Business Angels and Crowdfunding. Previously worked as a senior consultant for The World Bank and Head of Investment Research at Nesta where he designed, led and disseminated Nesta’s work on investments for innovation.

Day 2: Venture Capital and Business Angels

• Introduction to VC, what makes a good deal, the business plan, investment process, due diligence

• Business angels• How to manage a portfolio – case studies –

practical exercise with a real term sheet – what and how do you negotiate – lessons learnt

Day 2: Venture Capital and Business Angels

• Melanie Perkins. Melanie originally trained with 3i where she was responsible for investing in a wide range of business situations including management buyouts, startups and growth capital. She left 3i in 2008 to join Capital for Enterprise Ltd which has subsequently evolved into the British Business Bank, the state owned bank to support SMEs. She is responsible for the management of the direct investment portfolio including a fund to support female entrepreneurs.

Day 3: Policy Responses to the lack of innovation finance

• Rory Earley. Rory Earley has spent over 20 years investing in SME funds in both the public and private sectors. He designed and implemented the UK Government’s first spending interventions in the venture capital markets and went on to create Capital for Enterprise Ltd, the biggest single investor in UK venture capital between 2008 and 2013 (before being merged into the British Business Bank). Prior to CfEL, Rory was Senior Investment Manager at Westport private Equity Ltd (now Capital Dynamics).

• Damien Lane, Episode 1, Partner. Prior to Episode 1, Damien was a member of the Ventures team at Octopus Investments, where he was responsible for a number of investments in a range of areas. Damien also spent 18 years in the private equity industry, with both Electra Partners and Cognetas. Damien has an MBA from Cambridge University and a Master’s degree in PPE from Oxford University.

• Alex Hook, Nesta Fund, Investments Manager. Alex is responsible for managing Nesta’s portfolio of direct investments in early stage UK technology companies, as well as Nesta’s fund of fund investments. Alex joined Nesta in 2008 having previously worked for Foursome Investments (now Frog Capital), a privately backed venture capital firm for 9 years.

• Paul Jenkinson, Managing Director at Jenson Fund. In 2001 Paul set-up Jenson Solutions and his assignment was as interim Finance Director of an AIM quoted software company Intelligent Environments Group plc. Since then Paul has been Finance Director for a number of venture capital backed companies and has been growing Jenson Solutions.

• Richard Walker. Jenson Fund. In his investment banking career Richard has advised companies in a variety of sectors on M&A and capital raising, totaling over £30 billion in value. Since 2011, Richard has been a Director of the specialist wealth management firm Smythe House.

• Jenny Tooth OBE, CEO at UK Business Angels Association the trade body for angel and early stage investing. Jenny has been providing strategic support to BBAA since its establishment in 2004, supporting both policy and interfacing with Government, as well as developing the trade body’s major annual events. Jenny has over 20 years’ experience of supporting SMEs access to investment, both in the UK and internationally.

• Dr. Martha Mador, Associate Professor, Head of Enterprise Education. 15 years experience in Higher Education as programmes developer and manager, lecturer and researcher. Developed the WestFocus Entrepreneurship Centre, Knowledge London, and the Kingston University Entrepreneurship Centre. Former Course Director, Kingston MBA. Subject leader, Strategic Management. Previous experience includes Marketing Services Management in cable and satellite tv

Day 8: Developing innovation finance instruments

• Anthea Harrison has over 30 years’ experience of working in finance. She started her career as an Executive with Charterhouse Bank and then joined Lloyds Development Capital. After this she moved to Deutsche Bank’s Emerging Market department, where she worked with young companies in Eastern Europe and South America before transferring to Deutsche Asset Management and having responsibility for a £300m portfolio of unquoted investments. Following this, Anthea spent some years as a senior member of the management team of NESTA, a government fund investing in early stage technology companies in the UK. Presently Anthea is a member of the Investment Advisory Panel of two European Regional Development Funds, one based in North West England and the other in London. She is also Independent Non-Executive Director of Octopus AIF Management Limited.

• Prof Martyn Jones, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International). Professor Martyn Jones was promoted to Deputy Vice-Chancellor in August 2014. He was first appointed in 2007 as Pro Vice-Chancellor for External Affairs and subsequently to that, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Support and Student Services. Professor Martyn Jones acts as a key member of the University's senior management team and plays a key role in developing and implementing its strategy. He has oversight of and is the senior management team lead for all Kingston's international activity.
