DOOR SENSOR AUTOMATION MESSAGE: Months ago we installed door sensors on all Independent Living apartments and cottages. These sensors allow the Collington security team to see that residents are opening their front door, moving about the campus, and are ok. Security has been checking on residents who don’t open their door, first by calling them and then checking on them in person if the phone is not answered. As a next step to this project, we are automating phone calls to residents who have not opened their door by 6:15PM each day. When you get a call, you will be asked to press 1 on your phone buttons. Anyone not opening their door and not pushing 1 when called will get a visit by security personnel to be sure everything is ok. The automated phone message will say, “This is your check-in reminder call; please press 1 to acknowledge this message.” These automated calls will begin on April 24. For any questions about this program, please contact security at x2020. KEEP AN EYE OUT about Memorial Day/Regatta! Watch for future announcements in upcoming Couriers and Collington Discussion. Interested in Learning More About Collington & Collington Residents for our 30th Anniversary? The History Committee needs your help doing oral history interviews with residents, staff, board members, and other people involved with the founding, development, and life of Collington. We welcome suggestions of people who should be interviewed and seek people who can help do the oral history interviews. We’ll provide common questions and a short training course on how best to do oral history interviews. If you’re interested, please contact Charlie Clapper at [email protected]. Come join us! PET CHAIR COMMITTEE ALERT: Dr. Susan Maturo’s next Collington visit for our pets will be on May 7. Any resident who wants Dr. Maturo to visit their pet in a cottage, villa, or apartment must call Pat Kirkham

at x7292. Please leave a message, if your call is not answered. When you call, please describe the reason you are asking for a visit, so Dr. Maturo can know further what equipment will be needed for a new animal to be admitted to her files. Thank you! SAVE THE DATE: The next Jewish Sabbath service and dinner will be in the Dining Room on Friday, May 4 at 5:30PM. A MESSAGE FROM THE POETRY GROUP: This month, area PBS stations began a 12-part series called Poetry in America. Each 30-minute episode is about one poem (e.g., Langston Hughes's "Harlem"; Emily Dickinson's "I Cannot Dance Upon My Toes") and features a different group of celebrity responders (e.g., Yo-Yo Ma, Shaquille O'Neal, Joe Biden, Samantha Powers). The show airs Sunday evenings at 10:30 on WMPB 22 and 11:00 on WETA 26. OO Glass Cases Needs Donation of Jewelry Jewel Box sales of Jewelry in the 2nd Floor Glass Cases (GC), which are located by the Billiards Room, has made all the difference in the monthly earnings of the OO GCs. The money earned is donated through the OO shop to the Collington Residents Association for the important work of its committees. All jewelry is greatly appreciated. Broken necklaces are given to Marlane Liddell for use by the resident beaders who make the beautiful necklaces you see in our GC. Thank you to Marlane and all the beaders for your efforts. Our thanks also to Don Olson, who continues to donate new watches with new batteries to us. These have and continue to be most popular with our customers (fellow residents, staff, and visitors). What’s going on in the Courtyard?

Thanks to a brand-new grant from the Collington Foundation to the Ad Hoc Courtyard Committee of the Residents Association, here’s what’s happening right now or soon: The feeble groundcover currently in the beds is being removed, after which the beds will be enriched so that future plantings will flourish. In the meanwhile, you’ll see a neat (shallow) layer of “cosmetic” mulch on the beds. New annuals and perennial borders in several beds will be planted as soon as the gardeners feel confident that the frosts are behind us. A number of chairs, small tables, and umbrellas will be added to the Courtyard in the next few months. These are aimed at making both organized events and informal usage more appealing and comfortable. Thanks to Collington, the old crumbling and non-functioning fountain will soon be removed from the center of the Courtyard and a new one installed in a nicely visible spot that’s not spang in the middle of the space. This change will allow much better circulation of, and more flexibility for, residents and guests at the many events planned for the Courtyard in the next seven months. The Committee is hoping that in the next few months Collington will also both greatly improve access to water in the Courtyard and provide ample electrical outlets to allow lighting for special events as well as safer wiring for musicians. The Ad Hoc Courtyard Committee, composed of members of the Buildings, Flower, Garden, Grounds, and Dining/Hospitality Committees, and the Interiors Group, was appointed by the Residents Association. The members are Pat Duggan, Greg Gay, Peggy Latimer,
