THE MULTI FAITH WORSHIP CENTER IS A PLACE WHERE MULTIPLE FAITHS AND CONGREGATIONS USE THE SAME FA-CILITY. THEY SHARE THE BUILDING AND EACH HOLD THEIR OWN SERVICES AT DIFFERENT TIMES THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. I TOOK CONVERGING FAITHS AS A STARTING POINT OF TWO CONVERGING AXIS THAT LEAD TO THE WORSHIP CENTER. THIS IS REPRESENTATIONAL OF EACH FAITHS DIFFERENT PATH, BUT SAME ENDING FOCUS ON ONE GOD. THESE AXIS FORM THE BUILDING, THEY DEFINE THE EDGES OF THE WORSHIP CENTER AND ALSO CONVERGE INTO IT.
THE REST OF THE BUILDINGS SHIFTS AND BRANCHES OFF FROM THE CONVERGING AXIS. THIS ALLOWS THE WOR-SHIP SPACE TO BE THE FOCAL POINT. IT IS FRAMED BY THE REST OF THE BUILDING AND THE COURTYARD CREATED IN PLAN. THE WALLS OF THE WORSHIP SPACE ARE WHITE TO CLEARLY DISTINGUISH IT AS MOST IMPORTANT AND THE PURITY OF THE HOUSE OF GOD.
THERE ARE ALSO FEATURES THAT TIE INTO EACH FAITH, WITHOUT OFFENDING THE OTHERS. THE CEILING IN THE WORSHIP SPACE HAS A DOME LIKE PRESENCE. THERE IS ALSO A QUIBLA WALL WITHIN THE SPACE FOR ISLAMIC WOR-SHIP. THE WORSHIP SPACE HAS 12 SLANTED WINDOWS REPRESENTING THE 12 TRIBES OF ISREAL AND THERE COM-MON FOCUS AROUND GOD. THERE IS ALSO A PROGRESSION INTO THE WORSHIP SPACE STARTING IN THE EXTERIOR COURTYARD, THE OUTER COURT, INNER COURT, AND HOLY PLACE. THERE ARE ALSO MANY DIFFERENT SEATING AR-RANGEMENTS AND LAYOUTS TO ALLOW FLEXIBILITY IN THE SPACE.

ENTRY PERSPECTIVE

SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVESHOWING STRUCTURE, PROGRESSION, LIGHTING, AND ARRANGEMENT
THIS PROjECT IS A LARGER BUILDING AROUND 50,000 SQ. FT. THE SITE WAS LOCATED IN ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS AND WAS TO BE A RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER FOR URBAN ECOLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE METHODS. THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO SHOWCASE SOME SUSTAINABLE METHODS SUCH AS SUN SHADING, SOLAR ENERGY, AND NATURAL VENTILA-TION. THIS BUILDING IS LOCATED ON THE SAME SITE AS THE BRAKE HOUSE. THEY ARE TIED TOGETHER BY A WATER FEATURE IN THE COURTYARD THAT THE BREAK HOUSE LOOKS AS IF IT WAS PULLED OUT OF. THE BUILDING HAS A RHYTHMIC PATTERN THAT MATCHES THE BOATHOUSE AND AN INDUSTRIAL LOOK IS CREATED BY THE SOLAR PANELS AND WINDOW PATTERNS. THE STEP DOWN FORM TIES THE LARGE BUILDINGS ON ONE SIDE TO THE SMALLER LOCAL BUILDINGS ON THE OTHER. THERE IS ALSO A VERY LARGE CANTILEVER STRETCHING OUT TOWARDS THE MAIN FEATURE OF THE CITY, THE FOX RIVER. THE CANTILEVER IS LARGE AND SUPPORTED BY THIN MEMBERS TO SHOW PEOPLE THE POSSIBILITIES OF ARCHITECTURE.

THE BRAKE HOUSE IS A PROjECT REVOLVING AROUND THE 5 MODES OF SUSTAINABILITY, SUN, WATER, WIND, EARTH, AND EPIPHENOMENON. IT IS LOCATED ON THE FOX RIVER IN ST. CHARLES, IL AND IS DESIGNED AS A REST STOP FOR BIKERS, RUNNERS, AND BOATERS. THE BRAKE HOUSE PRO-VIDES ALL THE NEEDS OF A REST AREA AND IT ALSO EDUCATES THE PUBLIC ON SUSTAINABLE METH-ODS. THE BUILDING HAS A BUTTERFLY ROOF TO COLLECT RAINWATER. THE MAIN WALLS WITHIN THE BUILDING ARE RAMMED EARTH WALLS TO BE A PART OF PASSIVE SOLAR HEATING. THE OTHER WALLS WITHIN ARE MADE OF RECYCLED GLASS BOTTLES TO PROVIDE A SUBTLE LIGHT AND WAY OF USING OLD MATERIALS IN A NEW WAY. THE ROOF ALSO ACTS AS A SUN SHADING DEVICE, ALONG WITH THE GREEN SCREEN ON THE SOUTH FACING SIDE. THERE ARE WATER TURBINES IN THE RIVER, AND FI-NALLY THE BUILDING IS NATURALLY COOLED BY THE WINDS FROM THE RIVER. THE BUILDING DESIGN IS MEANT TO BE VERY SIMPLE TO EMPHASIzE THE 5 MODES AND HOW IT REACTS TO THEM. IT HAS A SMALL FOOTPRINT AND REACHES DOWN TO THE RIVER IN A STRONG ELEGANT WAY.

HORIzONS FOR THE BLIND WAS A PROjECT DESIGNED TO BE A PLACE FOR BUSINESS, AS WELL AS, PLEASURE TO THE BLIND COMMUNITY. THE BUSINESS WITHIN REACHES OUT TO THE BLIND COMMUNITY BY PRINTING THINGS INTO BRAIL. THE COMMUNITY PORTION OF THE BUILDING IS A LIBRARY OF BRAIL BOOKS AND BRAIL ART TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND ASSIST THE BLIND COMMUNITY. THE PROjECT REVOLVES AROUND ACCESIBILITY FOR THE BLIND COMMUNITY. THE ENTRY ACTS AS A FUNNEL WITH 2 WINGS REACHING IN EACH DIRECTION. ONE WING IS COMMERCIAL WHILE THE OTHER IS PUBLIC. THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF OPEN SPACE AND THE UPPER FLOOR IS CONNECTED BY BRIDGES. ANOTHER FOCUS OF THE PROjECT WAS LIGHTING. EVEN THOUGH THE USERS CANNOT SEE THEY CAN STILL FEEL THE HEAT FROM THE SUN.

THIS WAS A PRECEDENT ANALYSIS PROjECT, LOOKING AT AN ASSIGNED BUILDING AND THEN TRANSLATING IT AND REPRESENTING IT IN ITS BEST FORM. THIS PROjECT IS THE INTEGRAL HOUSE IN TORONTO, CANADA. IT IS OWNED BY A MUSICIAN, WHO IS ALSO A VERY INTELLIGENT MATH-MATICIAN. THE WORD INTEGRAL MEANS BEING AND ESSENTIAL PART OF THE WHOLE. I TRANSLATED THAT INTO MY REPRESENTATION. I CREATED A WATERCOLOR THAT INCORPORATED ASPECTS OF THE HOUSE, BUT WORKED TO COMPOSE THE WHOLE. THERE ARE DETAILS OF PLANS, SECTIONS, SHADOWS, AND CONSTRUCTION DETAILS THAT ARE DRAWN IN PENCIL AND OVERLAYED ONTO THE MAIN FLOOR OF THE BUILDING. THE COLOR BLUE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE MAIN STAIRCASE IN THE HOUSE IS LINED WITH BLUE STAINED GLASS THAT CREATES AN INTIMATE PLAY WITH LIGHT. THIS LED TO THE PANELED LOOK OF THE OVERALL COMPOSITION AND THE GRADIENT OF BLUE.

THIS IS A PORTABLE HABITATION DEVICE THAT ANOTHER STUDENT AND MYSELF DESIGNED. WE CALL IT THE ARCHI-TENT BECAUSE IT IS A DESIGN YOUR OWN TENT. WE DESIGNED IT FOR THE HOMELESS, SO THAT THEY COULD HAVE INDIVIDUALITY AND UNIQUENESS. THE TENT IS BASED ON A RIGID SPINE THAT HAS SEVERAL PIVOT POINTS. THE SPINE CAN BE MADE INTO MANY DIFFERENT SHAPES, AND THERE ARE ALSO SUPPORT PIECES THAT TWIST OUT FROM WITHIN THE MAIN SPINE TO SUPPORT THE FABRIC MEMBRANE. THE MEMBRANE IS ABLE TO CONFORM TO THESE DIFFERENT SHAPES. THE TENTS AND SPINE CAN ALSO BE jOINED INTO UNITS TO MAKE LARGER TENTS FOR FAMILIES OR COMMUNITIES OF PEOPLE.

DURING THE SUMMER OF 2010 I WAS ABLE TO GO ON THE ARCHITECTURAL STUDY TOUR. I VISITED ITALY AND SPAIN IN MANY DIFFERENT CITIES SUCH AS ROME, FLORENCE, POMPEII, BARCELONA, GRANADA, AND CORDOBA. I PRODUCED A LARGE AMOUNT OF SKETCHES AND WATERCOLORS, AND LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT ARCHITECTURE OF THE PAST.

FOR THIS PROjECT WE WERE GIVEN TWO WORDS TO WHICH WE WERE SUPPOSED TO CREATE A WALL. THE WORDS THAT I WAS GIVEN WERE THRESHOLD AND TRANSFORMATION. THE IDEA BEHIND MY PROjECT IS THAT THE CURVES WOULD SHIFT FOCUS AND MOVE THE PERSON THROUGH THE WALL ON AN AXIS THAT WAS NO LONGER PERPENDICULAR TO THE WALL. THE DIFFERENT PIECES IN SUBTLE WAYS SUGGEST THEY USED TO BE TOGETHER. SOME PIECES ARE PULLING APART AND CREATING TENSION AS IF THEY ARE STILL TRANSFOMING. THE WALL ALSO CREATES A SORT OF MOTION BECAUSE PIECES POINT AND LEAD TO OTHERS THAT EVENTUALLY SHOW THE PATH TO GET THROUGH THE THRESHOLD.
