TRANSITION FRAMEWORKCollege success begins with transition:
Why students struggle:TRANSITION FRAMEWORK
Have students rank the 5 areas of transition1=Most Important, 5=Least Important
TRANSITION FRAMEWORKHOW TO USE IT:
Imagine you live in a world of YES!!!
TRANSITION FRAMEWORKHOW TO USE IT:
What do you want to happen?
How can you use your past transitions and experiences in high school to help you create the life you desire in college?
How can you find real information, real answers, and a plan for what happens next?
People: Who are the people who can help, support, and guide you?
Places: Where are the three place you can find connection, community, and support?
Patience: How long will it take to navigatechange and get comfortable with the uncomfortable?
TRANSITION FRAMEWORKHOW TO USE IT:
PEOPLE: For every problem there are at least FIVE people who can offer support and guidance.
People in your corner:
1. People who volunteer2. People you pay3. People you enlist
TRANSITION FRAMEWORKHOW TO USE IT:
PLACES: You need at least THREE places on campus where you can find connection, community, and support. Each place gives students access to new people and experiences. Having three places means always having options. Without places a student panics, hates, or hides in his or her comfort zone.
Clubs, Activities, and Organizations
• Academic • Social • Spiritual
TRANSITION FRAMEWORKHOW TO USE IT:
PATIENCE: Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable means setting realistic expectations and using you people and places to help youface new challenges as you navigateall the changes.
TRANSITION FRAMEWORKHOW TO USE IT:
✴ Panic ✴ Blame ✴ Hate ✴ Hide ✴ Run ✴ Give up
IMPATIENT PEOPLE…
TRANSITIONand the first year experience…
1. Introduce college planning as a three part process to students and their parents. 1) SEARCH 2) SELECTION 3) TRANSITION.
2. Use past transitions to guide future transitions.
3. Help students identify the areas of transitionthat matter most to them.
4. Identify people and places on campus wherestudents can find connection and community.
5. Reach out to the people living the life you want to live.
6. Identity and plan how you will put yourself in the right placesand find the right people before ever setting foot on campus.
7. Set realistic expectations. It takes a good year to get comfortablewith the uncomfortable.
THE FOCUS SHIFTS✴College is NO LONGER about being wanted…
It’s about…
WHAT YOU WANT
THE IMPACT IS DRAMATIC:
✴Students with THREE PLACES on campus are engaged, empowered, and able to make stronger choices in alignment with their values.
✴Students with FIVE PEOPLE in their corner are supported and prepared to face unexpected challenges. They are equippedto be leaders in their communities.
✴Students who are PATIENT do not panic, run, hate, hide, attack, or make excuses. They give themselves permissionto get comfortable with the uncomfortable and work at a moreforgiving pace.
Students and parents who prepare, plan, and understand transition are set up for success…
