Student SpeakersAY E S H A R U M I G ’ 2 1G R A D U AT E S T U D E N T A D D R E S S

Ayesha Rumi will graduate with a master of fine arts degree in studio arts from the School of Art. Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Ayesha uses contemporary forms of image making to challenge narratives that have influenced identity in post-colonial societies through her community.

After graduating with distinction from Beaconhouse National University, Ayesha was awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship by Syracuse University. She has exhibited work in the United States, Germany, Pakistan, China and Italy. Most recently, she exhibited in the three-person show What Remains at the Satrang Gallery in Islamabad, Pakistan, and Carrying the Thick Present: Trauma, part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ M.F.A. thesis exhibition, at Syracuse’s Community Folk Art Center. Her work resides in the collections of Luciano Benetton, Aisha Abid Hussain, Malcolm Hutcheson and Salima Hashmi, among others.

Neva Knoll will graduate with a bachelor of fine arts degree in art photography from the Department of Transmedia. She holds a dual major in forensic science in the College of Arts and Sciences with an exercise science-dance minor from the School of Education.

In addition to being named a VPA Scholar, the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ highest undergraduate honor, Neva was awarded a grant from the SOURCE, the Syracuse Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement. Her other honors include membership in Delta Delta Epsilon’s Alpha Zeta Chapter at Syracuse University (the international forensic science honor society), the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the National Honor Society for Dance Arts and the Nu Delta Alpha Dance Honor Society.

Neva has served as a VPA peer advisor and is a member of the Syracuse University Dance Team and Alpha Chi Omega, Lambda Chapter. She has held virtual social media internships with Partners with Ethiopia (Minnesota) and Unintentionally Frenchified (Paris, France).

Julie Coggiola will graduate with a bachelor of music degree in music education with performance honors from the Setnor School of Music and the School of Education. She has a dual-primary focus in classical clarinet and jazz/commercial voice. She has been in leadership positions in multiple ensembles, including University Singers, the Syracuse University Wind Ensemble, Orange Syndicate Vocal Jazz Ensemble, the Morton Schiff Jazz Ensemble and the Brazilian ensemble Samba Laranja.

In addition to working at Hendricks Chapel, Julie has been a music instructor at Syracuse Children’s Theatre and a teaching assistant for the OCM BOCES summer school program for students with disabilities. Her love for working with these students extended into work for the Liverpool (N.Y.) Central School District’s Summer School for students with disabilities and the Music Technology Access Project.

Julie served as a VPA ambassador as well as a peer advisor for VPA and the School of Education. She is an involved sister of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music fraternity, and has been selected for membership in Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society. She has also been recognized as a VPA Scholar, the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ highest undergraduate honor, and a University Scholar, Syracuse University’s highest undergraduate honor.
