Those who choose to enter the world of work include those prepared to teach Pre K-12 students and perform other school service functions as well as others who may choose to embark upon careers in such public service areas as nursing and other health- related services such as sports management or exercise science and wellness, government, social and psychological services, personnel management, and the criminal justice system. Those who continue academic study at the graduate level may pursue a Master of Science degree in education leading to educational leadership licensure or school counseling as well as mental health counseling or an advanced degree in a wide range of occupations related to education, health, and the behavioral sciences. UT Martin’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. All teacher licensure programs in the College of Education, Health, and Behavioral Sciences are accredited by CAEP, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. The UT Martin Social Work Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education within the Council on Postsecondary Education and the U.S. Department of Education.

About our Departments

Behavioral Sciences (www.utm.edu/departments/behsci/)The Department of Behavioral Sciences offers high-quality degree programs designed to provide students with a solid understanding of human behavior, social processes, social institutions, and the linkages between individuals and the larger social reality. The department offers the B.S. in Criminal Justice (B.S.C.J.) and B.S. in Social Work (B.S.S.W.) degrees and undergraduate majors in Psychology and Sociology in support of the B.S. and B.A. degrees. Minors are available in Psychology, Sociology, and Criminal Justice.

Educational Studies (www.utm.edu/departments/educate/)The Department of Educational Studies offers graduate and undergraduate degrees as well as licensure programs in a variety of educational and counseling fields. All teacher preparation programs in the Department of Educational Studies are approved by the Tennessee State Board of Education and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preperation (CAEP).

Health and Human Performance (www.utm.edu/hhp)The department offers concentrations in Exercise Science and Wellness, and K-12 Licensure (Physical Education or Health and Wellness). Each of these concentrations leads to an exciting and rewarding professional career. Additionally, through this department a variety of Physical Activity Classes are offered to meet the needs of the UT Martin student body.

Nursing (www.utm.edu/nursing)The Nursing program is open to all who satisfy the entrance requirements of the University and the Department of Nursing. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is awarded the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) degree by The University of Tennessee and becomes eligible to take the National Council Licensure Exam for licensure as a registered professional nurse. The Department of Nursing also offers a basic baccalaureate degree to registered nurses with an associate degree or diploma in nursing. The RN-BSN Option is offered at the Ripley Center and online. The program is open to anyone with an RN license meeting entrance requirements of the University and the Department of Nursing.
