At the Dwight Schar College of Education at Ashland University, we’re on a mission to train the very best type of educator: one who understands the nature of learning, values teamwork and collabora-tion, embraces social and cultural diversity and eagerly anticipates all of the exciting challenges that the education profession brings.

As Ohio’s premier university in the preparation of professional educators, we enroll approximately 850 undergraduate students and 2,100 full- and part-time graduate and post-baccalaureate students every year at our state-of-the-art main campus facility in Ashland and our four regional program centers in Columbus, Cleveland, Elyria and Massillon.

I am open to new ideas and experiences. I am part of a global community. I am engaged in helping others. I am collaborative. I am a lifelong learner. I am an educator.

Here you’ll find the best of both worlds: a large, comprehensive education department at a small, nurturing University − a place where teachers, mentors, administrators and students come together to solve problems, develop and share knowledge, and plan for the future.

We offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees for teachers, administrators and human services personnel. We have more than 30 program areas across the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate levels and employ more than 65 full-time faculty, most of whom have their doctorate degree. We like to say that, no matter what you want to do in the field of education, with Ashland University behind you, you can!

“The education department provides students with several experiences in the classroom before you even get to student teaching, which is unlike what any other university had to offer that I looked into. They also

give you the confidence to be a great teacher …

they truly prepare you for what’s to come in your future based on their experiences.”–Emily Miller '10

A+At our last NCATE review, we met all standards, received a perfect score on our site visit and earned all positive marks during the process.

At Ashland, you get real experience, right away. When you major in education at Ashland University, you hit the ground running, gaining field and clinical experience from day one. As soon as you begin your freshman year, you’ll be given opportunities to take an active role in local area classrooms. Not only does this give you the chance to connect theory with real practice, it helps you discover early on if classroom teaching is right for you. Best of all, you’ll have received up to 300 hours of hands-on field experience by the time you begin your student teaching − 200 hours more than the state minimum required.

Additionally, in your senior year you will complete a 12-week internship that provides you with even more experience to take into your own classroom when you graduate.

We’re a big program in a small school. In the Ashland University Dwight Schar College of Education, you get all the advantages and opportunities that come with a large program combined with the individualized attention that comes with small class size and a high-quality private school education. Our faculty members – many of whom teach both graduate and undergraduate courses – possess a diverse range of educa-tional experiences and are really engaged with our students. They not only get to know you on a first-name basis, they also take an active interest in your progress. Our unique three-pronged approach to success joins each student with the right supervisors and mentors, which results in high-passing grades on state-mandated Praxis exams and outstanding results in field and clinical performance data, final grades and student evaluations.

Here, you’re part of a larger teamPerhaps nothing defines Ashland University’s Dwight Schar College of Education as much as its spirit of collegiality within departments and across College programs. By collaborating with both the College of Arts and Sciences and the Dauch College of Business and Economics, we are able to develop academically challenging programs that provide students with a deeper knowledge of the subjects they want to teach. Our department of sport sciences, located in a new 110,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility offers students degree programs in athletic training, exercise science, and sports management.

I am engaged in helping others.

I am open to new ideas and experiences. I am collaborative.

The world is your classroom. The Ashland University Dwight Schar College of Education is your gateway to a world of global opportunities. Here, you can widen your outlook on the world, develop a greater appreciation of other cultures and gain a comparative understanding of other systems of education, all while still being part of a program that values personal attention and knows you as an individual.

Our Consortium of Overseas Student Teaching (COST) Program gives you the opportunity to complete part of your clinical experience in a foreign country. After your first six weeks of student teaching in Ohio, you’ll have the option to travel overseas, where you’ll live with a carefully selected host family and teach in an English-speaking school for the final six weeks of

your internship. While there, you will not only gain firsthand experience of a new place and a new culture, but you will also have the chance to make the COST program even better by blogging about your experiences and sharing your feedback.

If an internship abroad isn’t your thing, but you’d still like to experience the world well beyond the borders of Ashland and Richland County, our Southern Internship Experience might be right for you. Developed in partnership between our Office of Field Experiences and school districts in South Carolina and Florida, the unique program gives students the opportunity to complete half of their internship in Ohio and half in a diverse district such as Charleston, Hilton Head, St. Petersburg or Orlando.

I am part of a global community.
