BACHELOR OF ARTSCommunication

Program Description

BA Communication is a Mass Communication-based program that covers fields in Journalism, Development Communication, Broadcasting, Communication Research, Multi-Media Studies, Film, Public Relations, Advertising, and the creative arts like theater and stage performance. Students are expected to do production outputs in print journalism, broadcasting for TV and radio, events management, marketing, communication management and, entrepreneurship.

At the end of the four-year program, students are expected to be exposed to the industry through internship and an educational trip to various industries outside of the city.

Program Learning Outcomes

The Communication Program aims to develop individuals who are able to develop and produce individuals who can:

1. Skillfully define and access information needs; responsibly assess and organize information and knowledge; produce, share and utilize information and knowledge with significant impact to society;

2. Communicate, develop, and produce communication materials addressing pressing society issues using different formats and platforms;

3. Prepare a well-articulated communication/media plan through skillful use of appropriate and updated industry technology;

4. Conduct ethical industry-relevant and updated communication and media research and evaluation for generation of new knowledge from a wide variety of perspectives and sources

5. Skillfully demonstrate communication management and leadership skills6. Develop entrepreneurial capabilities relevant to servicing the need of the

industry and society;7. Adhere to ethical standards and practices through the use of an inclusive, non-

discriminatory framework;8. Observe impeccable work ethics and practice rights and social responsibility,

with emphasis on personal and social accountabilities in the communication profession

9. Demonstrate a development orientation in communication work through the spirit of sustainability and participation.

10. Apply innovatively communication theories/models, principles, practices and tools in development work.

11. Work well as a team in creating outputs across all disciplines12. Use media technology in creating outputs that take pride in Filipino culture and

heritage.

Admission Requirements

The applicant who wishes to join the program must:1. have a minimum grade of 83% in English 1 or any English subject/s taken in

college;2. have met the UBAT cut-off score set by the CAS (61-69%tile);

3. have attended the general orientation conducted by the Department; and4. have satisfactorily passed screening requirements set by the Department.

Retention Policies

To be retained in the program, a Communication major must:1. maintain a grade of 83% in all major subjects and electives taken for the duration

of the program with a GPA of 80%;2. actively participate in the Communication Society and the Department’s co-

curricular activities; and3. comply with all the requirements set by the Department.

Furthermore, students will be dropped from the program due to any of the following reasons:

1. Received a grade below 83 in TWO professional courses and/or electives, 2. has poor attendance in Society-sponsored activities,

3. is found to have violated standards if intellectual dishonesty (as stated in the Student Handbook).

A students who acquired a grade of 82 or lower in any ONE professional education course is placed under probation for the next semester. Said probationary status will be lifted only if the student receives no grade below 83 in ALL of his/her professional education course during the next semester.

Program Description

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies aims to develop protean graduates capable of viewing and addressing world realities from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The Department offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (AB-IDS) program that provides students opportunities to define and design career track that suits their individual learning and career goals. The core curriculum offers theoretical and practical tools to integrate knowledge, drawn from 2 disciplines like Psychology and Education, Public Management and Communication, Information Technology and Business Management, or any combination of two disciplines within or across Colleges.

Given the variety of programs in the AB-IDS curriculum, graduates have diverse career opportunities whether in media, human resources management, public relations and corporate communications, information technology, sales and marketing, entrepreneurship, government services, to name a few.

Program Learning Outcomes

In line with the Institutional Mission Statement, the Program aims to produce graduates who are able to:

1. Apply multidisciplinary approaches to analyzing and solving contemporary issues/needs in the light of human-social development principles, self-reflection, and well-discerned decisions, specific to their respective field of interests.

2. Articulate thoughts, ideas, and feelings effectively and confidently in different settings and for various audiences, the identified social-development needs in verbal, written and/or multi-media form in English, Filipino, and/or the vernacular.

3. Use appropriate and relevant information and communication technology or other modern technologies effectively and efficiently to convey messages beneficial to the society and the Church.

4. Design and implement development plans using investigative skills alongside self-reflection, multidisciplinary approaches and innovative technological tools that are responsive to contemporary issues/needs.

5. Monitor and assess responsibly the development plans vis-à-vis human-social development principles/framework anchored on Christian Gospel values.

6. Adhere to the Christian ethical/moral standards and practices of human-social development to nurture one’s relationship with God, with others, with the self, and with the environment.

7. Collaborate with multi-sectoral stakeholders in identifying, designing, implementing, monitoring, and assessing development plans in order to arrive at well-discerned decisions in addressing contemporary social-development issues/needs.

8. Conduct multi-disciplinary research as an effective instrument towards providing scientific and concrete solutions to social-development issues/needs, and confidently share research findings in different settings and with various audiences.

9. Pursue with responsibility and accountability the life-long learning experiences and skills to continue discovering new knowledge for personal and professional growth in order to adapt to the changing and complex world of work and life.

Admission Requirements A student seeking admission to the program must comply with the following:

1. accomplished Program application form;2. all copies of grades-high school grades and admission test scores (if entering

freshman); latest evaluation printout (if a shiftee); transcript of records and admission test scores (if a transferee); or transcript of records and latest evaluation printout (if shiftee and a former transferee);

3. endorsement/recommendation from previous school/program officer;4. any other additional requirement/document that may be set by the Department

Chair, on a case-to-case basis; and5. interview with the Department Chair.

Retention Policies

A student is retained in the program if he/she:1. maintains a satisfactory cumulative GPA in all subjects taken for the duration of

the programs;2. does not exceed six (6) units of withdrawn subjects during the preceding term;3. maintains a GPA of 80 in all major subjects and career track electives taken for

the duration of the program;4. earns grades of at least 80 for subjects applied for credit as a free elective; and 5. fulfills all requirements set in the signed probationary status form, if applicable.

Program Description

The BA Political Science with Certificate in International Studies and Diploma in Public Management (BA PolSci – CIS and DPM) is designed to prepare students for university level education in political science concentrating on politics, governance and law, and furthermore with specializing emphasis on international studies and public management.

Guided by the La Sallian animo and philosophy of education, it provides students with holistic political education molded by the Expected La Sallian Graduates Attributes (ELGA) of Critical Thinker, Effective Communicator and Socially Responsible Christian.

To become the epitome of La Sallian professionals, the Program provides the students with well-crafted Outcome-Based Education (OBE) characterized by creative, dynamic and student-centered learning and management whether in the classrooms, on field trips or educational exposure, and co-curricular and extra-curricular engagements and interactions.

Program Learning Outcomes In line with the Vision and Mission of De La Salle Philippines within the milieu of the University of St. La Salle vis-à-vis the thrust of Philippine higher education, the Program aims to:

1. Recognize and define the distinctiveness of Political Science discipline in terms of its theories, concepts and methods as evidenced by the graduate skills to differentiate information in various contexts;

2. Demonstrate proficiently in oral, written and visual presentations in English, and in other local and foreign languages, and articulate thoughts and feelings tactfully that are rooted in Christian values using appropriate technology and innovative methods;

3. Articulate and discuss in multidisciplinary fashion in Political Science and allied disciplines; advocate societal development and cooperation among supra-national organizations resulting from investigative skills and self -reflection; and establish harmonious relationships with others especially the marginalized;

4. Critique, judge and respond to societal issues and problems based on substantive understanding of the situations thereby arriving at well-discerned decisions that have implications to the world, the Philippine society, and the Negrense community, particularly the family, the Church and the environment;

5. Work and express effectively and independently using multi-disciplinary approaches, multi-cultural teams and different social settings that respect diversity and bridge cultural differences;

6. Develop morally and socially responsible citizens and professionals who demonstrate civic virtue and La Sallian Christian values in their political engagement and practices locally, nationally and globally;

7. Participate in the generation of new knowledge by designing and operationalizing research inquiries using appropriate Political Science paradigms and methodologies guided by ethical standards.

Admission Requirements

Students who intend to join the Program should:1. Meet the requirements for general admission to the University;2. Have a minimum grade of 83% in PLSCI101 and PLSCI102;3. Have passed or satisfied the standard set by the Department’s Screening

Committee such as panel interview and written aptitude examination;4. Have completely submitted all the requirements set by the University and the

Department.

Retention Policies

To be retained in the Program, a Political Science major must:1. Pass and maintain a GPA of 83% and above in the major courses; failure in any

of these major courses will mean no readmission;2. Not incur more than nine (9) units of failed or dropped General Education and

Mandated Subjects during his/her entire stay in the Program; and3. Be actively involved in the Political Science Society and the Social-Political

Science Department co-curricular activities.

Graduate Track

Political Science students who wish to finish MPM must be conferred first the BA PolSci (with Certificate in International Studies and Diploma in Public Management) on the fourth year, take the Comprehensive Examination in all Public Management courses, enrolled in Thesis Writing and presented their Thesis approved by the Panel assigned by the Department and the College Graduate Program Committee.

The program is designed for students who wish to pursue a career as public administrators, policy makers, organizational managers in public, private or non-government organization, and as advocates of participatory governance and development.

Program Description

The AB Psychology program is anchored on a liberal arts education which aim to train students to analyze understand and appreciate the complexities of human mental processes and behavior and equip them with knowledge, skills and values to perform tests in various settings such as school, industry and community. This will prepare them for other career opportunities in Guidance and Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Forensic Psychology, Law, Human Resource Development and Clinical work.

Students enrolled in the program have options whether to take A.B. in Psychology only or opt to have additional certificates in Marketing, and Human Resources Management by enrolling specified courses in these fields.

Program Learning Outcomes

In line with the University Mission Statement, the program is designed to:1. Demonstrate the capacity to critically analyze and effectively communicate the

current major theories and concepts in psychology, and continually engage in discovering new knowledge, and synthesizes and evaluates from a multi-disciplinary approach using technology and innovative methods.

2. Demonstrate and apply the methods of psychological inquiry, guided by an awareness of their personal responsibility and accountability, in building knowledge on local culture and context using their critical thinking skills.

3. Demonstrate and apply psychological theories and methods in personal, professional and community settings conscious of being an instrument of God’s redemptive action in the world.

4. Demonstrate the capability for critical thinking and investigative skills alongside self-reflection as part of their independent learning in graduate education or in the professional context.

5. Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviors in research and practice by articulating thoughts, ideas, and feelings tactfully rooted in Christian gospel values amidst the complexities and (uncertainties) in the world of work and life.

6. Demonstrate harmonious relationship with self, colleagues, clients and others in various settings, while promoting respect for diversity and differences.

7. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the conduct of psychological assessment and evaluation, and other psychology-related functions such as, but not limited to, counseling/psychotherapy, training, and coaching, to help transform the community’s situation for the better.

8. Demonstrate the capacity to analyze with flexibility, sensitivity and adaptability their study of the natural sciences and the environment without compromising Christian gospel values as a preparation for a career in medicine and allied disciplines.

Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Biology program is structured as a generalized framework of study with the end view of grounding students with the fundamental concepts and principles and theories of the biological, natural and physical sciences and the conduct of research. This includes the acquisition of appropriate skills and training to prepare them for either medical studies, biological research, tertiary teaching, environmental & microbiological works. The curriculum consists of course work in the classroom, laboratory and field/community as well as on- the- job trainings.

Program Learning Outcomes

The BS BIOLOGY program aims to accomplish the following graduate outcomes:1. Competently communicate orally and/or in writing, their acquired breadth of

fundamental biological concepts and technical/analytical competencies using both Filipino and English in different settings and for various audiences to convey a message that is significant to society and the Church.

2. Engage in the generation of new knowledge and/or development projects in the field of biological sciences through involvement in the evidence-based processes of science, in search of a solution to a specific problem and subsequently disseminating results to individuals within and outside the biological discipline.

3. Collaborate with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams to critically assess contemporary issues in biological thought and research, the contributions of biology to the resolution of diverse issues in human affairs, and the impact of these solutions in a global and societal context.

4. Preserve and promote Filipino historical and cultural heritage by conserving and protecting our natural resources, in the context of Lasallian spirituality.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program starts at the freshman year. To be admitted, a student should:

1. meet the requirements for general admission to the university; 2. manifest serious interest in the natural sciences; and3. demonstrate diligence, dedication and determination.

Retention Policies

To be retained in the BS Biology Program, a student should:1. not incur failures in two major subjects in one semester; and2. not have accumulated failures of 18 units or more.

Program Description

The BS Psychology program is intended for college students who wish to proceed to Medicine proper or become potential human resource assets in a school, industrial, social/community, clinical/rehabilitation setting, research center and other organizations where interpersonal skills and competencies in human relations are important components.

Students enrolled in the program will have options whether to take B.S. in Psychology only or opt to have additional certificates in Marketing, and Human Resource Management by enrolling specified courses in these fields.

Program Learning Outcomes

In line with the University Mission Statement, the program is designed to:1. Demonstrate the capacity to critically analyze and effectively communicate the

current major theories and concepts in psychology, and continually engage in discovering new knowledge, and synthesizes and evaluates from a multi-disciplinary approach using technology and innovative methods.

2. Demonstrate and apply the methods of psychological inquiry, guided by an awareness of their personal responsibility and accountability, in building knowledge on local culture and context using their critical thinking skills.

3. Demonstrate and apply psychological theories and methods in personal, professional and community settings conscious of being an instrument of God’s redemptive action in the world.

4. Demonstrate the capability for critical thinking and investigative skills alongside self-reflection as part of their independent learning in graduate education or in the professional context.

5. Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviors in research and practice by articulating thoughts, ideas, and feelings tactfully rooted in Christian gospel values amidst the complexities and (uncertainties) in the world of work and life.

6. Demonstrate harmonious relationship with self, colleagues, clients and others in various settings, while promoting respect for diversity and differences.

7. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in the conduct of psychological assessment and evaluation, and other psychology-related functions such as, but not limited to, counseling/psychotherapy, training, and coaching, to help transform the community’s situation for the better.

8. Demonstrate the capacity to analyze with flexibility, sensitivity and adaptability their study of the natural sciences and the environment without compromising Christian gospel values as a preparation for a career in medicine and allied disciplines.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program starts on the student’s freshman year. To be admitted, a student should:1. meet the requirements for general admission to the university;2. pass the psychological tests; and3. must have a grade of 83% and above in Psych 1; and4. meet the criteria set by the Screening Committee conducted during the second

year of the program

Retention Policies

To be retained in the program, the student must:1. pass and maintain a Grade of 83% or better in all the professional courses;

failure in any of these courses will mean no readmission; and2. actively participate in the Psych Society and the Psychology Department’s co-

curricular activities.
