2014 COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN ROME PROGRAM The city of Rome offers a richly layered physical fabric through which we can engage in a range of fundamental design and historical investigations. The physical and cultural patterns of the city represent 2000 years of efforts to structure the built environment around a shifting landscape. With cultural artefacts of every conceivable scale, Rome provides a unique learning space in which students are immersed in a dialogue about durability and adaptability, permanence and change, preservation and design. As a living classroom, Rome has the capacity to challenge our preconceptions of spatial practice and to expand the notion of human experience in the urban context. The College of Art and Design is excited to announce the LSU Rome Program for 2014. During Summer 2014, we will offer a ten-week, 12-credit hour design curriculum taught by LSU faculty. Designed to integrate with existing curriculums in the Schools of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and the Department of Interior Design, the coursework will enable students to engage in the built environment of Rome, test- ing observations through historical investigation and design work. The LSU Rome Program will provide students with a rigorous academic environment that combines field studies, studio design work, and seminars, all based in Rome with supplemental day trips into the surrounding region. All field studies, travel, and hous- ing will be coordinated through our administrative staff at the Rome Center. In addi- tions, students are encouraged to take advantage of several free weekends over the course of the semester to expand their travels in Europe. DESIGN IN THE ETERNAL CITY summer

2014COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN ROME PROGRAM

The city of Rome offers a richly layered physical fabric through which we can engage in a range of fundamental design and historical investigations.

Designed to integrate with existing curriculums in the Schools of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and the Department of Interior Design, the coursework will enable students to engage in the built environment of Rome, test-ing observations through historical investigation and design work.

The LSU Rome Program will provide students with a rigorous academic environment that combines field studies, studio design work, and seminars, all based in Rome with supplemental day trips into the surrounding region. All field studies, travel, and hous-ing will be coordinated through our administrative staff at the Rome Center. In addi-tions, students are encouraged to take advantage of several free weekends over the course of the semester to expand their travels in Europe.

LSU AT THE ROME CENTERThe Rome Center is embedded in the heart of the city, in one of the old-est palaces in the city: Palazzo Taverna. The building was constructed in 1286, with ownership passing through three families. The main entrance of the studio space opens into a courtyard housing a baroque fountain by Antonio Casoni, built in 1618, and surrounded by the various buildings forming the complex. The palazzo is home to private residential apart-ments, banqueting halls, diplomatic residences and art studios.

STUDENT HOUSING IN ROMEAs part of the Program Fee, students will be housed in fully-furnished apartments in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. The students will be housed 4-6 per apartment. All apartments will have air-conditioning and wireless internet.

Apartments will be situated between Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and Piazza San Cosimoto. The neighborhood is home to a daily farmers mar-ket, several grocery stores, an art supply store, and countless restaurants.

The apartments are about a 25-minute walk and a 15-minute bus ride from the Rome Center.

GETTING AROUND ROMELSU will provide each student with a monthly pass that will provide ac-cess to all public transportation throughout the Roman Province. Ad-ditionally, private coaches will be arranged for all field visits into the sur-rounding landscape.
