People with AttitudeThis year our verse is Philippians 2:3-5. It encourages us to have the same attitude as Jesus Christ – humility, grace and love. I believe that Jesus’ teachings known as the Beatitudes are a perfect expression of His heart, and complement the meaning found in Philippians 2:5. If we work towards understanding and changing our behaviour to reflect the eight principles laid down in the Beatitudes, I am convinced that we can develop attitudes that are the perfect prescriptions for maintaining our mental and spiritual health. The words of Jesus in the Beatitudes reveal more succinctly and more clearly than any other section of literature the principles by which a person can know contentment, inner happiness and the right attitude to life and to each other. Have a read.Matthew 5 (The Message)You’re Blessed1-2When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at

a quiet place, he sat down and taught his climbing companions. This is what he said: 3”You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. 4”You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. 5”You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought. 6”You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat. 7”You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for. 8”You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world. 9”You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you

discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family. 10”You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom. Some commentators refer to them as the “beautiful attitudes”. Our attitudes have a tremendous and powerful influence on every part of our being – spiritual, physical as well as emotional. They are the gateway to health and happiness. The attitudes of the Beatitudes need to become part of our daily thinking and daily living. The words found in the Bible bring life and hope. What a wonderful world we would live in if more people lived by its principles. Sue Skuthorpe

After the beautiful story of God who creates the universe we learn that the story takes a sharp turn. The Bible refers to this as ‘the fall of mankind’. If you are familiar with the story you know that it details the tragic decline of the human race into rebellion from a loving God into darkness. C.S. Lewis refers to this as, “the turning of God to self,” Because being created makes a person “somebody,” there is a self, a will, a choice. Humanity saw what God created and said, “No thanks. I think I can do it better.” It is the idol of self, the worship and preservation of me by me and for me.

Although tragic, this is the beginning of God’s redemptive plan. If we are to gain a true picture of what love is, we must see that God is loves author. As we focus on love as Charlton Christian College’s cornerstones we will do well to see it in the greater story of what motivates God’s love for us.

or the weekGenesis 3:6-7

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and

pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some

and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he

ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realised they

were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for

themselves.

Primary Swimming Carnival

What an exciting and colourful carnival!! We not only looked good but our kids were so encouraging, well mannered and represented our school wonderfully. There were some great results in the pool too! Records were broken by Terangimarie and Liddell was extremely well represented and ran away with the house trophy once again. It was great to see much colour and noise come from the Grandstands. Well done Primary!!

I’d love to say a big thank you to all the parents who came along and supported our swimmers. It’s great to have such encouraging and helpful parents and families who support at events like these. A special mention to all the teachers who worked so hard to make it such a wonderful and fun day. We have such passionate and committed staff here at Charlton. The parent’s races were also hotly contested and loads of fun! Mr Lalor.

Year 9 CampChallenge Ranch, Somersby

In between activities and meals, the students found the time and energy to compete with each other through the interactive computer game “Just Dance”, which has become something of an annual tradition at Year 9 camp since it was first introduced a couple of years ago. The creative flair and sheer athleticism of some students participating in this game was a joy to behold.

On Tuesday, the students were immersed in the Invictus program. It began with a cross country run through dense bush and undergrowth and a very messy wade through algae-ridden swamp waters. Most students threw themselves into this arduous and smelly exercise with impressive enthusiasm.

The camp was thoroughly enjoyable and it was great to see the students engage themselves in the available activities with zeal and an increasing sense of independence. Mr Samild

Upon arrival, students were split into three separate groups and led towards the first of a series of recreational activities.

These included: archery, high ropes, abseiling, the flying fox and swimming in the dam.

During the evening sessions, students were introduced to the new Senior School leadership team, who led a time of worship and shared insights and wisdom with the younger students.

Later that night after lights out, Mr Welburn, aka ‘The Commando’ found some constructive ways of utilising some of the boys’ excess energy with some preseason rugby training calisthenics.
