A nationwide survey was conducted to evaluate theeffectiveness of college remedial mathematics programs._Questionnaires mailed to 200 two- and four-year_remedial educatorssolicitedinformation on teaching techniques, student evaluation,__courseofferings, faculty qualifications, classroom resources, mathlabs, time limits on remediation; follow-up studies; and the futureof remedial programs; Study findings; based on a 73% response rate;included the following: (1) 82% of the colleges offered elementaryalgebra; 68% arithmetic; and 53% intermediate algebra; (2) mostcolleges did not offer credit for remedial courses: (3) the majorityof the instructional faculty members held a_master's degree inmathematics or math education;_(4) the traditional lecture-discussionmethod was used by 74% of_the_instructors; (5) most instructorsfavored pencil-paper examinations; (6) the average class size wasfrom_15 to 30 students (7) 91% of the colleges provided__ tutorialservices; (8)_42% of the remedial students finished developmentalprograms within 15 weeks; and (9) 46% to 75 % -of the remedial studentssuccessfully completed at least one college-level math course afterremediation.
