SMSD ALUMNI SUCCESS STORY
City of Stafford Human Resources Director Shanell Garcia, a
2001 Stafford High graduate is proud to say that she has come
"full circle."
"I'm giving back to the community that helped foster the
foundation for who I am today," Garcia said.
...Garcia grew up in the Kingsway neighborhood of Stafford and
was a member of the SHS Cheerleading Team. She said the
quality of the SMSD academic programs prepared here for the
University of North Texas -- where she earned a degree in
Human Resources Management & Organizational Behavior.

FEBRUARY IS CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION MONTH
February is National Career &
Technical Education (CTE) Month.
At Stafford MSD, we are ahead of
the curve when it comes to Career
& Technical Education.
Our Stafford College & Career
Center has 13 Career Programs,
plus a partnership with Houston
Community College.
STAFFORD MSD TEACHER SPOTLIGHTYou may have heard the name Mark Spivey for
his accomplishments as a coach. He guided the
Stafford Girls Basketball Team to a 7-3 District
Record and a playoff appearance on Tuesday vs.
Brazosport.
But Spivey will be the first to tell you, “I’m a
teacher first.”
Spivey, a Pre-AP World History Teacher, was the
Stafford High Teacher of the Month in January.
He has a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s
Degree from Prairie View A&M and is currently
working on a Ph. D in Educational Leadership
from Prairie View A&M. He’s also working on a
Master’s Degree in History from Texas Southern
University.
SPARTAN SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Stafford High is starting a new initiative, the Spartan Scholarship Assistance Program. Our intent is to
help high school students submit scholarship applications in a timely and professional manner....
The goal of this initiative is to ensure our students are being awarded the maximum number of
scholarship dollars.
We need the community’s support. We need volunteers who can donate a minimum of two (2) hours
each month.
Volunteers can help in different ways. They include:
• identifying scholarship opportunities
• encouraging students to apply for scholarships
• proofreading paperwork and essays
• following up with students and their parents to ensure scholarships are completed professionally
and on-time.

DANCE TEAM WINS 7 AWARDS AT CINCO RANCH
In less than six months, the Stafford Sensations
have already made their presence known. They
won three "Best in Category" awards -- in Pom,
Kick and Hip Hop at a competition over the
weekend at Cinco Ranch High School in Katy.
They also won the Supreme Award, the
Applause Award and the Judges Award
...The competition included many 6A & 5A
schools with long histories of Dance Team
success.
LADY SPARTANS READY FOR PLAYOFFS
The Stafford High Girls
Basketball finished 7-3 in
District 25-4A (Second Place)
The Lady Spartans will face
Brazosport in the first round of
the UIL 4A Playoffs at 7 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 13 at Hightower HS
in Missouri City.
Tickets are $5 for Adults and $3
for Students.

The Spartans have already
clinched a playoff spot. The boys
basketball playoffs begin on Jan.

Stafford voters decided in November
that it was time to build a new Stafford
Middle School! The new Stafford Middle
School will house grades 6 through 8.
The current campus was built in the
1980's, and it's time for a change!
We included some 1980's Rock Music to
emphasize the point.
