Now the trio – Oliver, Lucie and Jacob Cardwell – are at the forefront of a Warwickshire cam- paign to get more youngsters to learn similar techniques. The trio went on a first-aid course run by the county’s fire and rescue service last August. But their mum Kayleigh, who has type 1 diabetes, had no idea their new skills would be needed within weeks to save her life. The children found her uncon- scious in the early hours of the morning one night in October. Her blood sugar levels had dropped and she’d fallen into a diabetic coma. Finding her barely breathing, Oliver, 13, Lucie, 10, and nine- year-old Jacob put their CPR training to use. They stayed calm, dialled 999 and, following the advice of the emergency operator, carried out CPR to keep Kayleigh alive until help arrived. Kayleigh, from Southam, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of my children. They stayed calm when many children wouldn’t have been able to. “For a ten-year-old to calmly perform CPR whilst the other children called 999 in order to save my life is just incredible.” Although Kayleigh’s diabetes is well managed, she wanted her children to be equipped with the right skills should anything happen to her as a result of her condition, and sent them on the first-aid course at Southam fire station. She added: “I would like to thank Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service for the training they gave to the children which ultimately saved my life. I would encourage anyone considering gaining lifesaving skills to get themselves booked on to a course. The sooner you have the training, the better equipped you will be to save a life.” Warwickshire County Council is hoping to encourage more people to attend the CPR ses- sions. The county’s chief fire officer, Kieran Amos, said: “Firstly, a huge congratulations to Oliver, Lucie and Jacob – what amazing children they are. Their quick thinking ultimately saved their mum’s life and that’s some- thing they can be very proud of. “As a fire and rescue service, we know how essential it is to have the right skills to save a life. That’s why we created the first aid course for seven- to 16-year- olds, to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to be able to save a life. “We are just thankful as a service for the role we play in the community which goes beyond fighting fires, yet still has a direct impact on keeping people safe and saves lives.” For more information on the courses available visit www.war- wickshire.gov.uk/wfrstraining service or follow on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pg/ WFRtrainingservices/groups/?ref =page_internal ■ Lifesavers Oliver, Lucie and Jacob Cardwell with firefighter Mark Powell at Southam fire station. CASH-strapped luxury car manufac-turer Aston Martin has announcedemergency plans to raise £500 mil-lion.
A consortium led by Canadian bil-lionaire Lawrence Stroll will invest£182m into the carmaker, with therest coming from current investors.
As part of the rescue deal, theRacing Point Formula One team, which is partly owned by Mr Stroll, will be branded Aston Martin from2021 for at least ten seasons.
The move comes after the Gaydon-based firm said it had experienced“challenging trading conditions” in2019. The underperformanceprompted a financial review of thebusiness.
Mr Stroll’s consortium will take a20 per cent stake in the firm, with the60-year-old joining the board asexecutive chairman.
Director Penny Hughes has con-firmed she will step down once thedeal is complete.
She said: “The difficult tradingperformance in 2019 resulted insevere pressure on liquidity whichhas left the company with no alterna-tive but to seek substantial additionalequity financing. Without this, thebalance sheet is not robust enough tosupport the operations of the group.
“Notwithstanding recent weak
trading, the strength of the AstonMartin brand and our expandingportfolio of cars has allowed us toattract a strong new partner in MrStroll to support the turnaround ofthe business.”
Mr Stroll, who has invested inhigh-end clothing brands TommyHilfiger and Ralph Lauren, and hisconsortium have agreed to provide£55m of short-term working capital, with Aston Martin paying it backonce the share placement is com-plete.
The cash injection means the man-ufacturer – synonymous with theJames Bond franchise – will nolonger need to draw down $100m ofhigh-interest debt.
Mr Stroll said: “I am very pleasedthat I and my partners in the consor-tium have reached an agreement withthe board and major shareholders tomake this significant long-terminvestment.
“Our investment underpins thecompany’s financial security andensures it will be operating from aposition of financial strength.
“On completion of the £500m offundraising, I look forward to
working with the board and manage-ment team in Aston Martin Lagondato review and improve each aspect ofthe company’s operations and mar-keting, to continue to invest in thedevelopment of new models andtechnologies, and to start to rebal-ance production to prioritise demandover supply.
“I and my partners firmly believethat Aston Martin is one of the greatglobal luxury car brands. I believethat this combination of capital andmy experience of both the motorindustry and building highly suc-cessful global brands will mean that, over time, we fulfil Aston MartinLagonda’s potential,” he added.
As part of the deal, Aston Martinhas announced it will push back itsinvestment into electric vehiclesfrom 2022 to 2025.
Instead, the company will nowfocus its attentions on a V6 hybridengine to help cut carbon emissions.
Chief executive Andy Palmer said:“We are focused on turning aroundperformance, restoring price posi-tioning and delivering a more effi-cient operational footprint.
“The actions announced will allowus to implement and deliver on ourreset plan and provide Aston MartinLagonda with a sustainable platformfor the future.”

PARENTS are being urged to cut theamount of sugar in children’s dietsamid efforts to reduce long-term healthrisks.
Through things such as chocolate, sugary drinks and cakes, children con-sume the equivalent of around eightsugar cubes a day – or more than 2,800a year.
Children are at risk of becomingoverweight or obese, and sufferingfrom tooth decay. In the long run, obese children are more likely to growinto obese adults, with a higher risk ofdeveloping diseases such as type 2 dia-betes and heart disease, one of the maincauses of early death in the UK.
Now south Warwickshire healthchiefs are advising parents to takesimple steps to cut their children’ssugar intake, including:
BUYING low-sugar yoghurts; GIVING children water or no-
added sugar juice drinks; and STARTING the day with low-
sugar cereal.Parents are also advised to check
labels on packaging to see how muchsugar is included.
Dr David Spraggett, chair of theNHS South Warwickshire ClinicalCommissioning Group, said: “Weknow that local children are consumingtoo much sugar, but the good news isthat parents can take action now to pre-vent this building up over the years.
“By making simple swaps each day, children can have healthier versions ofeveryday foods and drinks while sig-nificantly reducing their sugar intakeand improving their chances in lateryears.
“Take time to read the food and
drink labels as cutting back on sugarcan be as simple as changing from achocolate or frosted-coated cereal to ashredded wholegrain cereal, orreplacing a higher sugar drink for low-fat milk or no-added-sugar drinks. Ifwe cut back the sugar now, before ourchildren become young adults, we aresetting them up for a healthier, happierfuture.”

At SG Doors we specialise in the fitting of bespoke double skinned, insulated, remote control, electric roller garage doors that can be supplied to your specifications, including a range of different colours. We also fit composite front doors.
Roller Garage Doors are efficient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the roller system means the doors roll directly up into a to roll system mounted above the door frame.
GAIN EXTRA GARAGE SPACE
The space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.
SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL GARAGE DOORS
Essentially a Roller Garage Door is an insulated double skin aluminium curtain protecting your garage. With the double side brush in the guide runners and a curtain that rolls right to the floor, it excludes draughts and is effcient andconvenient at both restricting and allowing access to the garage.

INATTENTIVE “blind as a bat” youngdrivers face a return to L-plates as part ofa hard-hitting campaign to cut road casu-alties.
A bat’s head superimposed on the bodyof a driver will be seen on billboardsacross Warwickshire in a bid to stopmobile phone use at the wheel.
Drivers aged 16 to 19 are a third morelikely to die in a collision, and one in four18- to 24-year-olds crashes within twoyears of passing their test.
Annette Lloyd, head of the campaign, said: “The strong visual image to grabattention, linking to the notion that using amobile phone makes you blind – if youwere asked to close your eyes for threeseconds whilst driving along, would you?And specifically the message that if adriver is caught using their phone withintwo years of passing their test then theylose their licence – that’s the truth.”
Four young people in the 17-25 agegroup were killed on Warwickshire roadsin 2018, with a further 267 injured. Youngdrivers aged 17-19 comprise just 1.5 percent of UK licence holders but areinvolved in nine per cent of fatal orserious collisions.
Inspector Jem Mountford said thescheme built on last December’s anti-drink-driving campaign, adding: “Evenusing a hands-free mobile phone or satnav while driving is a huge distraction, and any distraction greatly increases therisk of being involved in a collision.
“Officers use their judgement and ifthey think you’re not in control becauseyou’re distracted they can stop you andyou can be prosecuted.”
A total of 75 driving instructors acrossWarwickshire have signed up to back thecampaign.
Dr Gemma Briggs, senior lecturer in
psychology at the Open University, said:“If you’re distracted by your phone whiledriving, your driving performance is sig-nificantly diminished to the extent thatyou are four times more likely to crash. You’re far less likely to notice hazards andwill take much longer to react to any haz-ards you do see.
“This applies equally to hands-freephone use as hand-held use, meaninghaving two hands on the wheel and botheyes on the road isn’t enough if your mindis elsewhere.”
The phone records of anyone involvedin serious or fatal accidents are checkedby police. Penalties include up to £1,000in fines, six licence points, disqualifica-tion or prison.

A thing of beauty – a Ferrari Dino.Photo: Tim Scott.
Dinos galoreto be stars ofcity centrespectacularTHE London Concours hasannounced the first of its specialfeatures, a uniquely colourfulcelebration of one of the most iconicFerraris of all-time – the Dino.
Presented by independent Ferrarispecialist Foskers, this privately-owned collection of Dinos will be theheadline feature of the capital’srenowned automotive garden party.
Not initially badged as a Ferrari, the Dino was developed to honour thememory of Enzo Ferrari’s late sonAlfredino and has gone on to becomeone of the most cherished models tohave ever been produced atMaranello.
At the London Concours 2020,taking place from 10th-11th June, aunique line-up of eight Ferrari Dinomodels will gather – each onepresented in a different factory-produced colour.
It’s the flagship feature in a showthat will see the rarefied lawns of theHonourable Artillery Company HQ –just a stone’s throw from Bank andMoorgate in the City of London –transformed into motoring nirvana forjust two days.
More than 100 automotive iconswill gather in classes, ranging fromThe Pursuit of Speed to The Era ofthe Hypercar.
First introduced in 1967, the Dino206 GT was the first mid-engined carfrom Ferrari, and the first to use a V6at a time when all of its cars wereV12-powered.
The 2.0-litre V6 engine itself wasadapted from one of Alfredino Enzo’sown racing car designs for road caruse.
And so, with the release of the newDino brand and the 206 GT, Ferraristepped into the fray against the all-conquering Porsche 911.
With a lightweight aluminiumbody, a more compactfootprint than existingFerrari models, perfectweight distributionthanks to thetransverse mid-engined layout andadvanced independentdouble wishbonesuspension all-round,the Dino was ahandling revelation.
And just two yearsafter the 206 GT’sintroduction came theDino 246 GT to bolsterits success.
With an increase inengine size to 2.4-litres – hence 246 GT –
came more power and a slightincrease in performance; it couldhave been more but Ferrari decided toswitch back to heavier steel bodypanels, adding around 50kg to thekerbweight.
Nevertheless, the 246 GT was arunaway success, selling more than3,500 between 1969 and 1974.
In total around 3,700 Dino 206 and246 GT/GTS were built, transformingFerrari’s business and productionnumbers.
Showcasing the gamut ofoutlandish original colours offered toDino customers, the LondonConcours will gather examples inRosso Chiaro red, Grigio Ferro grey,Blu Dino, Nero black, Nuovo Gialloyellow and more.
Among them is a rare “Chairs andFlares” version of the Dino, one ofjust five UK-delivered examples withthe sought-after additions of widewheelarches and Daytona seats.
London Concours director AndrewEvans said: “Before the Dino, Ferrariwas building enormously powerfulV12-engined cars in exceedinglysmall numbers.
“It’s not an overstatement to saythe business was transformed by thepopularity of this nimble, beautifullybalanced and lightweight sports car.
“The Dino set a template for awhole range of mid-engined Ferrarimodels that continues to this day, andincludes legends like the 355, 430 andeven the latest F8 Tributo.
“It’s hard to pick just oneMaranello icon to honour at LondonConcours this year, but our carselection committee is in totalagreement: the Dino deserves time inthe spotlight, and we’re more thanhappy to oblige,” he added.
