Upcoming Sermon Series I’d like to share with you two themes we will explore together between now and Easter. The first will be for five Sundays from February 2 – March 2. Our theme is “We Can Be More.” Most of us hope our lives can grow, our spirits can evolve, our relationships can deepen, and we can become increasingly happy and fulfilled. For those five weeks we will take a look at how that hope can become reality. And then, though it seems Christmas is barely past, we will enter the sea- son of Lent. Ash Wednesday comes on March 5. To say it is a sacred or holy time is an understatement of significant degree. In truth, there is no way to describe the importance of the season in the lives of Christians. Whereas Advent is exciting and Christmas joyous, without Easter we would not observe Christmas at all. It is the empty tomb which stands alone in Christian history, a symbol of eternal victory that defined Christ’s place and our future. We do not, however, hurdle Lent to get to Easter. Instead, there is a journey we must make. And so, our Lenten theme will be “Journeying with Jesus.” Lent is a time for remembering what Jesus endured, and why, and for whom. On Sunday morn- ings and during Holy Week this Lent, we will try to see those things through the eyes of people who encountered and interacted with Jesus on his final journey. There were individuals, some famous and others anonymous, whose roles helped shape our Faith. Their stories are told in the gospels. And whereas their moments with Jesus may have been brief, the lessons we can learn from their encounters span across the centuries right into our own day and time. By reflecting upon those who were close to Christ in his final journey, we find wisdom and strength for our own journeys, as well. FEB-MAR 2014 SUNDAY WORSHIP, 11AM DR. MICHAEL B. Re / M A R K /sBy Dr. R. Mark King

Even as we now enter into the second month of a brand new year, it still seems so new to me! At the end of 2014, we never know what awaits us. Just a year ago, I was living in north Carolina and now I am a new Yorker!

I for one was ready to close out 2013. With my illness and surgery, I was ever ready for 2014! Again, thank you so much for your Christian compassion and loving concern over my situation. I will always remember you for it.

The whole experience made me very sentimental and reflective of my life. It made me think of my father who passed away in 2005. It also made me think of other loved ones and those who made an impression on my life. I particularly remember my father’s brother, Uncle Johnny.

Uncle Johnny died in July 2008, two and a half years AFTER his baby brother. He lived to be 91 years old.

Samuel Johnson King was born during World War I. He was a self-made man. He and my dad both were. I am a full product of the South with having a great-grandfather whom everyone called “Big Daddy” and another great-grandfather known as “Grandpa Jones” (no, not the famous Country singer!). I also had one of those wealthy uncles—Uncle Johnny. You see, Uncle Johnny started a welding supply company in 1957 that went on to become one of north Carolina’s most successful companies. He bought a huge spread of land on Lake norman when it opened and developed it. The treat of a Sunday afternoon growing up was a boat ride to his place.

When I was called into the ministry, Uncle Johnny was so proud. He affirmed me every step of the way.

When I preached for the very first time at age fifteen, he was sitting right there in the church! He kept up with me all through college and semi-nary. His wedding gift to me and my bride was a honeymoon at his Ocean Isle Beach home on the north Carolina coast. now that was a gift!

Uncle Johnny loved Christ. He was a charter member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, one of the largest churches in north Carolina. I don’t think he particularly cottoned to the idea of my becoming Methodist. What would he say about my being in new York City?!

When my father died, Uncle Johnny came to Daddy’s service, in a wheelchair and almost blind, but he was there. The next and last time I saw him was when he died.

You know, we only have moments of opportunity in this life to say the things and do the things that really matter. Then they are gone. Moments to say, “Thank you” or “I am sorry – forgive me” or “I really do love you.” I sure wish I could see Daddy and Uncle Johnny one more time.

2014 is here. Make it count. Do something special today for someone before the opportunity slips by. Time passes so quickly. Before you know it, 2015 will be here. May God bless you in 2014 and may you richly bless others in it.

The Extraordinary OrdinaryBy Rev. Kirsty DePree

This is the time in the liturgical year between Christmas and Lent that we call ordinary, but there is nothing ordinary about it. I would rather call it extraor-dinary, for we are reminded that an extraordinary God has come among us and we are called to treasure and ponder what that really means. It means paying attention to those moments that are sometimes out of the ordinary, the still small voice of God, the attentive ear from someone who cares, a beautiful sunrise, an inquisitive question from a child, warmth after a cold day, and whipped cream on hot chocolate. One of my Christmas traditions is to watch the Sound of Music, and I love the song “My Favorite Things,” the chorus is: “When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad.”

I am writing this article on January 7, and the temperature on my way in was three degrees. Admittedly, I was mumbling and grumbling about the cold, but as I was walking into the office I thought of the blessing of a hot cup of coffee to warm my bones. In this ordinary liturgical season, what might we do to see and be the extraordinary in our regular rhythms of life? The answer is to see love, show love, receive love and give thanks throughout the whole year.

Another answer to that question is found in one of my favorite poems by beloved, theologian and civil

rights activist Dr. Howard Thurman, who reminds us why we stand on the side of love throughout the year:

When the song of the angels is stilled,When the star in the sky is gone,When the kings and princes are home,When the shepherds are back with their flock,The work of Christmas begins:To find the lost,To heal the broken,To feed the hungry,To release the prisoner,To rebuild the nations,To bring peace among brothers,To make music in the heart.Lent is around the corner and as the work of

Christmas continues may our Lenten journey be filled with opportunities to do and be the extraordinary as we find ways to heal the broken, feed the hungry and make peace with others. When we do this there will be music in our hearts. I happen to love when David cries out to God from the depths of despair and says weeping may remain for a night but rejoicing comes in the morning. Being mindful of the extraordinary helps us to see each new day anew and ask, “what are you going to show me now O God?”

Our Call to Make a DifferenceEaster offering 2014

By Susanah WadeAt the beginning of Advent, we were reminded

of the hope promised by God to secure the future of mankind through his son Jesus Christ. We are now reminded through the season of Epiphany of how Christ made Himself known to the world which was indelibly marked by His mandate of outreach and service to mankind. As we stand poised to enter the period of Lent, we are also reminded of the price Christ paid through His death and resurrection to pursue this mandate in the world because of His love for us.

Here at Marble, during the season of Lent through Easter, we have had a standing tradition of living out Christ’s mandates and teachings by ramping up our efforts to fight the insidious and ravaging effects of societal beasts. Each year, because of the Marble community, we have been able to support organizations that are dedicated to fighting poverty and its impact on society. In 2013, our congregation generously gave $175,000 to the Easter Offering

which supported over 40 organizations in our city and beyond which fight every day to combat the devastat-ing effects of poverty.

The ravages of poverty are many – impacting families, the elderly and in particular our children. Its tentacles very often extend and wrap themselves firmly around the foundation of our society, seriously victimizing our children. Without an awareness of the extension of the tentacles, it can seem as if the effects of poverty are restricted to less visible parts of our society. In reality however, poverty rears its ugly head every day as we watch the drain on our eco-nomic system, the manifestation of its impact around hunger, homelessness, the declining educational achievement of our children, the escalation of crime, and the destruction of our families, and in particular of our children who are foundational to keeping our society in perpetual and productive motion.

There is no doubt that society has an aware-ness of the tentacles of poverty, and certainly, there are ongoing efforts aimed at arresting their growth. However, despite these efforts, the problem continues to loom. As we enter the season of Lent, we hear

Heartsong: Seeking the Heart of God from the Heart of New York CityBy Rev. Travis B. Winckler

In the midst of life in the hustle and bustle of new York City, how do you connect with the sacred in your life? Since Advent, Susanah Wade, myself, and a team of folks have been exploring that question in a new service of worship at Marble Church. We have gathered not to add another obligation to already busy calendars, but to practice the art of silence and meditation in a time when such spaces can be hard to find.

The service is called “Heartsong” for two reasons. First, we desire to experience the intimate presence of the Spirit that longs to take up residence in all our hearts (John 16:13; Romans 8:11; 1 Corinthians 3:16).

Second, the quiet and contemplative nature of the service invites a spiritual practice that takes time. Like art, it cannot be rushed or hurried, but rather, engaged over the long haul with the patient joy of discovery. As one participant expressed to me after our fourth gathering in late December, “At first I found myself restless in these services, but now a few weeks into it, I want to go deeper.”

Though life in this city can con-stantly rush us along, let me ask again, “How and where do you con-nect with the sacred in your life?” This is the presence of God that is not in a hurry, but waits patiently for us to embark on the joy of discovery; that sacred journey toward the song

of the Spirit composed in each of our hearts. We would be delighted if you joined us on this

journey Sunday evenings at 5:00pm in the New Chapel, downstairs on the Concourse Level.

Our Call to Make a Difference... COnTInUED FROM PAGE 4 echoes of our new Mayor’s decree to fight poverty in our city, of the Pope’s mandate to end poverty and of the voices of a culture of ordinary human warriors speaking out to expose the ravages of the beasts. How do we as God’s children join these efforts and combat poverty and its impact on our socio/economic system?

We invite you to help us fight against the tentacles of poverty by making your contribution to this year’s Easter Offering. It may not be an easy fight but nei-ther were Christ’s efforts in this regard. However, as a community, we can stand together and continue His mission. Thank you for your continued support.

Reflections from the EditorBy Karla Fritsch

I was blessed to have a living Valentine in my family. nana’s birthday was February 14, 1891, and she was proud to call herself an “Old-fashioned Valentine.”

I also grew up around a paper Valentine of sorts. Actually, it was another living Valentine – I Corinthians 13. I remember hearing my dad’s expres-sive voice recite it countless times. “…And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.”

There was a wooden plaque hanging next to our kitchen sink that made part of I Corinthians 13:4 a daily reminder. My sister Kristi had used the last of her spending money at Riverside Bible Camp one summer in the 1960s to buy this gift. It was small and had kittens painted on it with the words “Love is kind.” At some point she decided it needed to be spruced up and painted it to glow in the dark. It became a family treasure that echoes in our hearts and stories to this day.

In a way, that plaque was also a living

Valentine. At times the lore of it still helps bring I Corinthians 13 to life by reminding me to be kind. When I’m extra tired and overwhelmed my patience and kindness can run low, especially in the hustle and bustle of nYC. However, generally I do make a conscious effort to be kind. Sometimes that means stopping to open a door that I’m walking by to help someone whose hands are full, or telling the woman taking my phone order at the Chinese restaurant “thank you” and “have a nice night.” Then there was the time I gave a woman on the train a plastic bag because the paper bag holding her new sneakers had ripped. Months later I’m still touched by her reaction. It was a brief, yet blessed moment for both of us.

God’s greatest gift of Love is something we can give simply wrapped up in kindness. I invite us all to keep looking for ways we can be living Valentines – not just on February 14. Every day is a day to cel-ebrate Love and make it glow through the dark for everyone we meet.
