Accuracy in detail – case-hardening steel The group of high carbon steel strip materials comprises a number of different types
of steel with numerous qualities. Consequently there is an exceedingly wide range of
applications.
Within this group case-hardening steel is noted
for its exact performance. Highest accuracy even
in case of closest thickness and width tolerances,
unmatched wear resistance and breaking
strength withstanding even extremely strong
fatigue stress are the crucial characteristics of
this material. This ensures reliable quality and
long durability wherever this type of steel is used.
Since its working properties are controllable
case-hardening steel will always be the first
choice whenever precision is required. The
automotive industry really appreciates this.
During the vehicle manufacturing process it relies
on materials made by CDW and uses it frequently
and in numerous components. Take the finger
follower in the valve control of combustion
engines, for example, which is made of case-
hardening steel-making sure that the engine
always runs smoothly. Another example is the
impulse ring, which is an important element in the
antilock brake system. Case-hardening steel
made by CDW – this is what we call tailor-made.

Peak performance at all times – hardening and tempering steel
Good secateurs have to withstand a lot of strain.
They will cut anything, from a tiny sprout to
a thick branch. These continuously changing
stresses and strains are no problem for sturdy
secateurs with excellent cutting stability, a vital
property, which is achieved during the production
process by means of extra hardening and
tempering as well as special surface treatment.
Consequently secateurs made of hardening and
tempering steel produced by CDW will not only
cut things neatly, they will also do so for a very
long time.
The above-average firmness of hardening and
tempering steel produced by CDW makes this
product highly attractive to a number of industrial
sectors.
In the automotive industry, for example, our steel
is used to produce seat belt tongues. As you can
imagine, breaking strength, high durability as well
as wear resistance are indispensable for such
a product. The remarkable hardening of belt
tongues is achieved by adding various elements,
e. g. chromium. Thus we are able to guarantee
a lasting quality and reliability of our products.
Reliability, breaking strength and exact
workmanship with all tolerances – this is what
our hardening and tempering steel is all about.
You can certainly rely on that!
Hardening and tempering steel is an all-rounder – secateurs made of this type of steel
help to tidy up public parks, and the seat belt tongue made of the same material helps
to protect motorists in case of accidents. Hardening and tempering steel is extremely firm
and robust – a crucial head start for you and your products.

Cold rolled high carbon steel strip
Well connected – Spring steelYou know that when you are driving a car you do
a lot of things automatically – you press the
clutch and change gears without even thinking
about it. You probably didn’t know, however, that
one device is crucial for the smooth procedure of
these operations – the diaphragm spring made of
spring steel. This spring works as a coupling
element in the drivetrain, it ensures smooth
transitions as well as smooth and controlled
clutch travel.
As far as toughness is concerned spring steel is
second to none. Durability and form stability are
well above-average, and it guarantees
continuously excellent quality for any final product.
Spring steel obtains its characteristic properties
in a special treatment procedure during the
production process. In a number of different
production steps the steel is rolled and annealed
several times, and it is carefully hardened and
tempered. Various wide strip and narrow strip
lines are used for this procedure, which is
additionally supported by our quality and process
management system. Consequently we are able
to guarantee the highest performance and optimal
quality for your products!

Cold rolled high carbon steel strip12
Sophisticated – process technology with guaranteed qualityHigh carbon steel strip produced by C.D. Wälzholz is the result of sophisticated
process technology specialising in cold rolling and heat treatment. CDW has 4-stand
tandem rolling mills and 20-roll mills, which are able to reach speeds of up to 850
metres a minute.
Sophisticated measuring methods and state-of-the-art electronic control systems help
to achieve even the closest tolerances. By means of non-contact x-ray and isotope
measuring strip thicknesses are recorded so that roll positions can be automatically
adjusted to set the required tolerances. Additionally strip length and speed data is
collected by means of laser beams.
Heat treatment of high carbon steel strip is crucial for the material properties. CDW
uses HICON batch-type annealing furnaces, which were conjointly developed with
Ebner, the manufacturer. With these special batch furnaces spheroidise annealing
with temperatures of up to 850 °C is possible.
We optimize the economies of the production processes of our customers in every
detail: Besides the most modern process technology for homogeneous material
properties we adjust all processes to handle very large coils. These coils have an
outside diameter of up to 1.850 mm helping our customers to achieve an even more
economical production.
Outward appearance – our products are worth protectingFor us at C.D. Wälzholz it is important that our
high carbon steel strip coils reach your company
in perfect condition. Therefore we aim for the
highest quality not only in production but also
in packaging. Our modern automatic packaging
equipment can guarantee smooth logistics
between production line and shipping department.
Every type of transport is different. Bearing this in
mind, we have developed suitable and appropriate
packaging for all national and international
destinations. Take our heavy-duty overseas
packaging, for example. It will most definitely
withstand the strains of long and rough
transportation across the ocean. We will, however,
never use more packaging material than
absolutely necessary. After all, this is for the
benefit of the environment and of our customers.
Due to our long international experience we have
continuously improved our packaging: optimal
protection, clear marking and distinct traceability
are the results of such an extensive experience.

Enhanced windingApart from developing high-quality materials one of our main objectives has always
been process optimisation. Together with our customers we constantly aim at enhancing
production processes. One good example is the continuous further development of our
oscillated wound coils.
These coils help our customers to stay ahead of competitors as far as the production
process is concerned. For example, we have managed to increase the length of the
individual steel strips from 1,000 to 30,000 metres. Moreover, steel strips can now
be joined by means of modern welding technology. A further advantage is our
computer-controlled oscillating winding procedure. And, consequently, operating times
are 30 times longer now and this means: labour-intensive set-up times and unprofitable
shutdown times are minimised.
Here they are again in short form – the advantages of our oscillated wound high carbon steel strip coils: » Strip widths of up to 70 mm
» Strip length and operating times 30 times longer
» Individual coil widths of 250 mm - 550 mm
» Jumbo coils with a weight of up to 3,500 kg
