High performance cold milling machine W 2100:powerful and designed for continuous service

Full power ahead

The high performance Wirtgen coldmilling machine 2100 DC has an un-qualified success story to tell, extend-ing over 14 years. The next chapter ofthe story is the new high performancecold milling machine W 2100. With thispowerful machine, Wirtgen will main-tain its position in the premier league of cold milling machines.

In the design of the “newcomer”, Wirt-gen employed advanced components, revising the overall design of the ma-chine to ensure optimum performance. The result is a compact machine whichprovides reliable milling or complete

removal of large areas with a high ad-vance speed and a working width of2 m. The W 2100 is thus suitable forlarge building sites requiring a high dai-ly output at maximum cost efficiency.

These are the impressive features of aperfectly co-ordinated design:

• High engine outputA modern, highly economical dieselengine with an output of 470 kWdrives all components. Fuel con-sumption is optimised by an enginemanagement system.

• Fast advance speedExtremely powerful traction drives

ensure that the machine advanceswell in any situation, ensuring a max-imum in daily output.

• Mechanical milling drum driveThe mechanical milling drum driveguarantees full utilisation of the en-gine output at top efficiency.

• Efficient RAP loading Generously dimensioned conveyorsplus an extremely powerful beltdrive reliably convey milled material(RAP) from the milling chamber tothe truck. This avoids unnecessarywear of the milling drum due to anexcessive dwell time of the RAP inthe milling chamber.

machine worked its way through the 30 cm thick carriageway construction with aplomb.

• Compact constructionThe W 2100 may be big on perform-ance, but it is surprisingly small totransport. With a width of only 2.55 mand a transport height of just 3.0 m themachine requires no special trans-portation permits. The compact designof the W 2100 is also invaluable in op-eration, permitting the operator a goodview all around the unit at all times.

• Small turning radiusThe W 2100 is also unparalleled in itsclass in terms of manoeuvrability. Asteering angle of 40° combined withthe optimum position of the crawlertracks makes for an inner turningradius of just 2.40 m. This firstly im-

proves manoeuvrability on smallsites and secondly allows curves tobe milled in one pass where othercold milling machines have to makeseveral approaches.

• Simple controlsThe easy operation of Wirtgen coldmilling machines has earned it greatpraise and world-wide recognition.Clearly arranged operating panels, proportional control of advancementand steering plus large, well-markedoperating elements ensure safe op-eration, free from fatigue.

• Eco-friendly technologyNeedless to say, the engine meets

the requirements of the EPA and the machine is efficiently sound-proofed. A fan controller ensures thatthe cooling fan is only activatedwhen, for example, the temperatureof the loading air or the hydraulic oilrequire cooling. The energy savedcan then be used for the actual taskin hand – milling.

The operator’s platform of the W 2100: clearly organised and ergonomic

The machine operator works at a comfortable operating console with clearly labelled controls. Two seats are installed in the walk-throughoperator’s platform that can both be moved to positions beyond the edge of the machine.

In the walk-through operator’s plat-form of the W 2100 a wealth of detailsmake for many hours of fatigue-freeoperation. Two operating consoles –which can both be swivelled andmoved laterally to beyond the edge ofthe machine – are designed for er-gonomic operation while sitting orstanding. This enables the operator tokeep a watchful eye on the millingedge.

For safe operation in darkness the ma-chine is equipped with headlightsmounted beneath the operating con-soles so that the whole console is in-directly illuminated.

Comfort and fatigue-free operation

Anyone with a few hours experienceon a milling machine will know howunpleasant constant vibrations can be.To eliminate this factor as far as possi-ble, the W 2100 has an elasticallysprung floor in the operator’s platform. Also, the footboards above the accessladders – where the operators spendmost of their time – are mounted onvibration absorbers. This is gentler on the joints and thus better for thehealth.

Easy cleaning

Another highlight of the W 2100 is thewater system which comes as stan-dard. During milling it ensures effectivecooling of the cutters and conveyorsand also does an excellent job ofcleaning the machine. With waterpressure of up to 20 bar, the whole ma-chine can be cleaned effectively. Aspecial feature: the hose retractor rollsup the water hose almost automatical-ly after work is complete.

Protection against vandalism

To avoid unpleasant surprises whenresuming work, stable lockable coversprotect the consoles reliably againstvandalism.

The water system can be operated comfort-ably from the ground.

All operating elements are just where they should be

The panels for controlling the milling depth are positioned on the right or left hand side of themachine. All other important machine functions can be controlled from here as well.

In all operating modes the machine operator receives all necessary information about themachine and the engine via the display of the WIDIS 32.

The operator’s wellbeing has not been neglected in the midst of all this technology. Thanks tothe secure holder for drinks bottles, a refreshing drink is always in reach.

The milling drum of the W 2100 – full power build-up right where you need it

The milling drum of the W 2100, equipped here with the patented and well-tested quick-change tool holder system HT3: the cutters are effective-ly cooled during milling by the stainless steel spray bar (top of photograph) which significantly enhances their service life.

Quick-change tool holder system HT3: the upper part of the tool holder is fixed with a screwand can be replaced swiftly, without welding, even after prolonged use.

Everything has been designed forlong service life

The whole drum unit of the W 2100 hasbeen designed for long service life.Parts that are inevitably exposed toheavy wear from the milled materialare manufactured using special hardmetal (Brinell hardness HB 400). In ad-dition, the scrapers and edges in thedrum housing have been designed foreasy replacement.

The large opening angle of the drumflap of 100° together with the largeclearance between the crawler tracksand the drum ensure optimum acces-sibility when changing cutters.

High efficiency mechanical milling drum drive

Three V-belts with a total of 12 ribs effectively transfer power to the milling drum. An automaticadjuster (top right of picture) always ensures optimum belt tension.

Precise milling work with accurate edges dueto special edge fittings on the milling drum.

The lower rear part of the loading conveyor with integrated gradation control beam protectsthe conveyor from wear.

Every detail well-thought out

The construction of the milling drumallows for a maximum milling depth of32 cm so that complete carriagewaystructures can be removed in onepass. The automatic level control, which is installed as standard, ensuresa constant milling depth.

The side plates can be lifted hydrauli-cally, should it be necessary to drivearound fittings. The side plates canalso be fastened for simple replace-ment of the cutters in the edge area.

Large crawler tracks for maximum milling speed

The engine output is not the only im-portant aspect for economic millingoperation. It is also crucial that themachine can make swift progresswherever it is used.

The W 2100 achieves this with the per-fect co-ordination of the traction drivesystem with the engine output: itsmaximum travel and working speed of86 m/min makes it the fastest coldmilling machine in the 2 m class. More-over, the machine offers the additionaladvantage of easy manoeuvrabilitydue to its smooth all-crawler steering.

The W 2100 is equipped with large B4 “heavy duty” crawler tracks. The essential components such as the hydraulic motor and the crawler shoesare designed for sustained high performance and long service life.

The steering angle of the crawler tracks is 40° to either side. The machine thus has no problempulling up alongside any milling track through crab steering.

Effective loading of milled material for high daily performance rates

The belts of the W 2100’s loading and discharge conveyors are 1,000 mm wide so that the milledmaterial produced can be safely transported away in any working situation.

The conveyor speed, which can be adjusted regardless of the engine revolutions, facilitates awide discharge arc for optimum loading of large trucks.

The slewing discharge conveyor permits load-ing of trucks offset to the unit.

Designed for high milling output

With its efficient transport system, consisting of the loading and dis-charge conveyors with a belt width of 1,000 mm, the W 2100 is unrivalled in its class.

As is usual with Wirtgen cold millingmachines in the 2 m class, the dis-charge conveyor can be swivelled to ei-ther side. So the trucks travelling eitherin front of or offset to the machine canbe loaded. Due to the high conveyor ca-pacity, milling operation can continueeven if the conveyor has been stoppedto change trucks. The unit can thus op-erate uninterrupted, increasing the dai-ly output.

The conveyor system really comes intoits own when “it matters most”, i.e. atlow engine revolutions and with a highmilling output. It ensures that the largequantity of milled material is removedimmediately, avoiding undue wear ofthe milling drum from the start.

A gradation control beam, which is op-tionally available rounds off the power-ful conveyor system, ensuring an evengrain size of the granulated RAP, pre-venting slabs from breaking off and pro-tecting the belts.

Good accessibility, easy service

Simple maintenance is the best way toensure that the machine is alwaysready for service. At Wirtgen this iscommon knowledge, which is why the W 2100 features only a few easyaccessible servicing points and com-prehensible operating instructions.

The most frequent servicing job ischanging the cutters. This is a simplematter for the operator: an optionallyavailable seat on the rear crawlertracks and the hydraulic drum rotatingdevice ease and speed up cutterchanging considerably.

Both the fuel filter and engine oil filter can easily be reached from the ground. Likewise, the hydraulic folding roof can also be opened and shutfrom the ground.

The hydraulic oil filter, the valve block, mounted on vibration absorbers, and the air filter are allwithin easy reach under the hydraulically operated engine bonnet.
