• Colby Alumni and Friends LinkedIn portal: Currently, the Career Center has 15 active affinity groups, with more than 5,975 members.

• Wage Project: In 2013 we brought back the Wage Project, a nonprofit organization focused on eliminating the wage gap and educating college women, to speak to students from all class years.

• Paving the Road to a Future in Finance The Career Center took 54 students on our first Paving the Road to a Future in Finance, a day-long event in Boston, in the Fall of 2013. Jay Allen `86 spearheaded the event bring together over 112 alumni and Colby parents offering networking and informational programming to the students.

• Colby on the Road The Career Center worked with the Alumni and Parent Relations Offices to sponsor the 2013 Colby on the Road career immersion program. 25 students spent the morning visiting dental and medical schools, and then spent the afternoon learning about careers in research, public health, and health administration in addition to touring Massachusetts General Hospital. The day concluded with a well-attended networking event that allowed students to chat with a variety of alumni in the health professions in Boston.

• International Student Programing After surveying the international students in the spring of 2013 we discovered the international students did not feel the career center served them. Besides developing a section on our career center website specifically for international students we also developed a series of five workshops and additional information pertinent to international students.

Employer Relations The Career Center proactively prepares students for a selective and highly competitive job market. In addition to individual advising, the Career Center encourages students to attend workshops and specialized programming, including general and industry-specific networking events, in order to help them realize their post-graduate goals. Based on data collected throughout the year and in the Class of 2014 Baccalaureate Survey, 55% of seniors have, to date, accepted offers of employment. Currently, the Career Center offers four recruiting opportunities to students and employers, including on-campus recruiting, consortia events, remote conferencing, and a job posting board. According to the Class of 2014 Baccalaureate Survey, graduates were employed across a variety of industries and fields, including technology, insurance, teaching and educational services, finance/banking, consulting, science and social science research, non-profit administration, the performing arts, and government to name a few. 2013-2014 Employers List Appendix A Recruiting: New Relationships & Results The Colby Career Center actively engages employers, often with the help of alumni and parent ambassadors, in order to aggregate employment opportunities for graduating seniors. In the past academic year, new relationships were developed with ChoiceStream, IBM, Microsoft, Prudential (Corporate), RegentAtlantic, The Advisory Board, and UBS to name a few. The Career Center also continued to strengthen existing partnerships with employers of all types—corporate and non-profit alike. Recruiting partners were rewarded as never before; Prudential captured five employees, including one intern who graduated from Colby but has one-year to complete a dual-degree from Dartmouth’s Thayer Engineering; Morgan Stanley and Success Academy Charter School in NYC hired three, while Goldman Sachs, iModerate, and Dana-Farber Research Institute of Boston all had multiple hires. Colby graduates continuing to have a strong showing among Teach for America Corps members as well. See “2014 Full-time Jobs” for complete reporting. Recruiting: Consortia/Virtual Employers continue to utilize electronic media to overcome geographic barriers, to expand their reach to a variety of schools, and to manage costs. Specifically, employers are increasingly relying on telephone and/or Skype to conduct screening or first-round interviews prior to inviting students on-site. In addition, the Career Center hosted five (5) virtual employer information sessions via WebEx. The Career Center views utilizing technology as a welcome alternative to the possibility of eliminating Colby from recruiting processes altogether due to geographic barriers and the increased expense of traveling to Waterville. The Career Center also continues to collaborate with its colleagues at Bates and Bowdoin (via our CBB cooperative) in order to attract employers to Maine, and continues to participate in consortia like the Liberal Arts Career Network (LACN) and the Liberal Arts Recruiting Connection (LARC) in order to increase opportunities for students. Recruiting: Employer Information Sessions Recruiters continue to rely on information sessions, whether on-campus or virtual, as a primary means to increasing their brand presence. In addition to the traditional evening sessions, many organizations have begun to experiment with the time of day sessions are offered (i.e. breakfast, late afternoon receptions, etc.), with the formality of the sessions (e.g. come as you are, come when you can, etc.), as well as the type of sessions (e.g. presentations combined with leadership/educational workshops, informal networking, interview preparation, etc.)

Inspired Results The Career Center cultivates relationships with employers worldwide and partners with peer institutions

to meet students’ and employers’ recruiting expectations. By partnering with Colby alumni and parents, the Career Center aggregates employment opportunities for our students.

Graduate and Professional School Approximately three quarters of Colby students will go on to earn a graduate degree. In the Career Center students learn about the various graduate school admission tests (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc.) and the process of applying to graduate or professional schools. Students are encouraged to make an appointment with a Career Center staff member as early as possible to talk about graduate school plans. The Career Center strongly encourages students to work closely with faculty in the discipline in which they want to pursue further study. Advising for programs in the health professions and law is based in the Career Center. Inspired Experience Internships are increasingly important for students to test career interests and for gaining an

edge landing a first job. Internship opportunities exist on campus, nearby, or almost anywhere in the world and can be part of a normal semester, a summer, or a Jan Plan.

Internships for Credit Internship policy allows students to earn one credit per internship, for up to a total of three credits toward the 128 required to graduate. Students can also to apply for transcript notation, but without receiving a credit hour, for completed internships. JanPlan Internship Comparisons

Colby Connect Colby Connect is a four-year curriculum built upon a pragmatic developmentally appropriate sequence of workshops, information sessions, and collaborative programming. Colby Connect embraces students and connects them to fellowships, internships, job shadowing, Jan Plan and employment opportunities, and graduate studies. Colby Connect also integrates Career Center programming with alumni, parents, faculty, and recruiters. Each of the four years offers a unique set of three to four primary workshops that students are expected to complete before advancing through the program. The workshops’ foci (self-assessment, career exploration, and communication competence) are essential life skills necessary for individual, academic, and professional development. The Colby Connect four-year curriculum grew and expanded during 2013-2014. In fact, the Career Center added 212 new first-year members to Colby Connect increasing overall membership of current students to 1,136 as of June 30, 2014. A total of 45 Colby Connect workshops were completed in 2013-2014 with impressive student satisfaction.

*The Colby Connect Program began during Jan Plan 2009 and the class of 2010 was not included

Paving the Road to a Future in Finance Spearheaded by Jay Allen ’86, the Career Center and over 110 alumni and Colby parents, working in finance, partnered to offer a networking and informational program to 57 students. The second annual “Paving the Road to a Future in Finance” event was a day-long, alumni-driven event held on October 2 at the BC Club in Boston. The day started with a welcome from Jay Allen, a managing director at Credit Suisse, which was followed by four employer-based panels: Wellington Management, Fidelity, Credit Suisse, and Cambridge Associates. The lunch session, led by alumni hosts at each table, focused on “How to Land Your First Job in Financial Services.” Five additional sessions occurred prior to the one-on-one speed interviews, including a panel on Alternative Investments as well as informational sessions on Stock Picking, Global Macro Analysis, B-School, and the Top 10 Interviewing Mistakes to Avoid. The day closed with an evening mixer including a panel of alumni and parents from a variety of organizations and fields talking about “Embracing Change to Advance your Financial Career.” Colby on the Road The Colby on the Road program is a yearly event that provides an opportunity for students to explore different industries and identify career interests through employer site visits and networking events in different fields. In October 2013, Colby on the Road took 25 students to explore careers in health care. In the morning, students visited Tufts Medical School and Tufts Dental School, where they also learned about graduate programs in public health and training for physician assistant careers. Colby alumni in aforementioned programs gave tours to current Colby students. In the afternoon, Dr. Jaff P’15 hosted the group at Massachusetts General Hospital. Students toured the hospital and attended meetings to learn more about research in health care, public health, and health administration careers. An evening networking reception and panel presentation that included alumni and Colby parents capped off the evening. International Student Programing The Career Center has developed the following workshops for our International students and have established a strong working relationship with Susan McDougal, Associate Dean of Students for International Students. Career services provided by the Career Center focused towards International Students: Learn how to navigate Going Global, Career Link, LACN, and other resources focused specifically towards I.S. students. Cultural awareness of the American employment: This workshop focuses on developing a resume that highlights International students’ strengths, interviewing basics, and how to network. *Ability to articulate their Visa status to employer. LinkedIn for International Students: With over 200 million people on Linked In and most of them in professional positions, learn what Linked In is and how to use Linked In for job searching and networking with Colby Alumni. Legal topics regarding internships, employment and residency in U.S.: Learn the difference between OPT, CPT, H-1B Visa, and employment – based immigrant visa process and legal nuances. 1st year students receive introduction to this at their International student orientation. STEM & Cap Gap explained. (STEM majors eligible for a 17 month extension of their OPT) Cap Gap is the extension to your OPT to the H-1B start date. Alumni success stories: We will look for opportunities throughout the year to bring a panel of International student alumni who will talk about how they navigated employment after Colby, what worked, what they wished they had done different.

Pre-Med Academy The Pre-Med Academy is a Jan Plan designed to provide a health care immersion experience that is more and more critical in strengthening pre-med students’ qualifications as medical schools adjust their pre-requisites and expectations. In 2014, the PMA’s fourth year, 16 students were paired with MaineGeneral-affiliated physicians in the Waterville area for 80+-hour job shadowing and clinical observation experiences in a variety of medical specialties along with projects and weekly class meetings. Projects are selected in coordination with participating physicians and presented at an end-of-term poster session and reception. With 61 student participants to date we are now able to identify some post-Colby destination information data for those participants: Currently attending medical or dental (1) school: 20 Currently applying to attend medical school in 2015: 7 Pursuing PhD: 3 Currently attending or accepted to PA or nursing programs: 4 Pursuing other directions (including 1 MHA): 3 Still deciding or not yet ready to apply*: 24 *PMA participation is generally limited to select juniors and seniors. Since most pre-med students take 1-2 years to do research or other work between Colby and medical school, outcomes regarding further education for many participants will not be clearly identified for several years after the PMA experience.

Inspired Community Faculty, alumni and parents are available to mentor students in a variety of career related and post-

graduate endeavors. Part of the value of Colby's close student-faculty interaction is the accessibility of mentors, within or outside a student's major field of study.

Kassman Leadership Fund The fund was established to support leadership programming and initiatives in the Career Center and in particular to enhance two current programs, Colby Connect and the Entrepreneurial Alliance (EA). Funds were used to support the Colby Connect kick-off for first year students. To date, 212 freshmen signed up to participate in the program. In addition, support was provided for the fourth annual Spring Business Competition, the highlight of the EA program on April 26. See below for details on the EA competition. The Entrepreneurial Alliance (EA) The Career Center created the Entrepreneurial Alliance because student entrepreneurs were coming to the Center looking for resources and help with their entrepreneurial endeavors. The Career Center believed that an effective entrepreneurship program should benefit all Colby students, regardless of major, class year, or career path, and that the liberal arts and entrepreneurship are often perfect complements. Key Program Details: Now and Future This is an exciting time for the Entrepreneurial Alliance program, as it evolves to better meet the needs of our student entrepreneurs. At its inception, the Entrepreneurial Alliance leveraged institutional and community strengths by offering the following:

• One year curriculum that includes workshops, counseling appointments, information sessions, and collaborative programming

• Opportunities to work with Colby faculty, alumni/parents, and local entrepreneurs to develop a business prospectus

• Spring Business Competition for $15,000 in start-up funding Beginning in 2015, Colby will offer an “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” course during Jan Plan. In this Jan Plan course, students will learn the process of developing new venture opportunities from idea through market launch and subsequent growth. Students will identify new venture opportunities, evaluate the market potential of selected opportunities, rationalize the most promising ideas by developing a thorough business plan, and test their venture hypothesis against new venture funding criteria. Students will also learn about post-launch venture growth issues. This Jan Plan course will replace previous workshop programming offered through the Entrepreneurial Alliance, which will continue to host the annual spring business competition. Program Advisory The Entrepreneurial Alliance is guided and supported by an Advisory Committee currently consisting of three alumni, two parents, a faculty member, and a current student. In this year of transition, the Advisory Committee helped to set the workshop curriculum content, to envision a sustainable model for the program, and to organize the annual business competition. Our student leader played an important role in encouraging student participation in the program and in ensuring additional engagement beyond the classroom. Spring 2014 Business Competition Overview Colby students in the EA program may participate in the annual Spring Business Competition. The Alliance awards start-up capital to the most-promising enterprise or enterprises—for profit or non-profit. This year, student entrepreneurs were evaluated on their 5-7 minute presentation to a panel of judges and pitch deck published on the crowdvoting platform, Launcht. 25

Spring 2014 Business Competition Winners Nine (9) entrepreneurs, two participating as a team, pitched their ventures at the fourth annual competition in front of a panel of four judges and a crowded auditorium. The winners were the entrepreneurs who demonstrated, through real world accomplishments that their project/idea was the most "funding ready" enterprise in the Alliance for that year. The winners of the Spring 2014 Business Competition were Biznector.com ($10,000) and Engage NOW ($5,000): Biznector.com Cristian Garcia ’16 Major: American Studies Biznector is a resource for young or growing companies to quickly find and partner with trusted warehousing and fulfillment service providers. We screen every company listed on our database for reliability using a 10-point checklist. Users can filter through the database by service, capability, or industry as well as by government or business accreditations. A marketplace for classified jobs facilitates interactions between users and listed companies. ENGAGE Now Jonathan Sommer ’14 Major: Government Minor: Chinese ENGAGE Now prepares Chinese students planning on studying at colleges and universities in America for their time in the United States. The program specifically aims to overcome cultural differences and language barriers through one-on-one Skype consultations. ENGAGE Now Skype tutors are distinguished student leaders who are enrolled at a U.S. college or university. Chinese participants sign up for a minimum of 10 consultations that each address a different topic, such as “do’s and don’ts in U.S. culture,” “how to do small talk,” and “American sports and entertainment.”
