2003; Nurkan, 2012; Tümkaya, 2017; Yang, 2005; Wright, 2002) and that the preschool
teachers have a positive attitude and support for the family's participation in the education
process (Abbak, 2008; Atakan, 2010; Connelly, 2007; Çelenk, 2001; Sabancı, 2009), but they
are not very willing family participation studies in real practices, such as emotional and social
reasons such as family and education, family education level, family socio-economic status,
etc., cannot be successful in general (Smith, 2008). At this point, it is important to investigate
the attitudes of the preschool teachers towards family participation activities and how often
and with which content they give family participation studies in line with these attitudes.
The aim of this study is to determine the attitudes of the pre-school teachers towards
the family participation studies and the characteristics of the family participation studies
(content, place frequency).
Method
In this study, mixed research method was used. Mixed research method is a type of
research that researchers use qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to
examine the subject in depth (Johnson, Onwuegbuzie & Turner, 2007). The participants of the
study consisted of 35 preschool teachers who work in independent kindergartens in the socio-
economic and socio-culturally different regions of the province of Edirne in the 2016-2017
academic year. In the study, the Attitude Scale for Family Participation Studies, developed by
Bayraktar, Güven &Temel (2016), was used as a quantitative data collection tool. As a
qualitative data collection tool, an interview form developed by the researchers. The
quantitative data of the study were analyzed by using SPSS 24 program. Demographic data
obtained from Demographic Information survey are presented in percentages. Content

analysis was used for qualitative data analysis. Using these findings, cognitive maps that
provide a visual presentation were used to better understand the complex structure of family
participation studies.
Findings
The aim of the study was to determine the attitudes of the preschool teachers towards
their family participation activities and the characteristics of the family participation studies
(content and frequency of inclusion). According to the results obtained from the quantitative
data of the research, it was found that the attitudes of pre-school teachers towards family
participation studies were not effective in terms of gender, age, occupational year, type of
graduated school, and whether or not to take any education for family participation studies.
According to the qualitative results of the study, it is seen that they are aware of the
importance of family participation studies but they do not provide sufficient level in their
applications.
Discussion & Conclusion
When the quantitative results of the study were examined, it was found that there
was no difference between the attitudes of pre-school teachers according to the variables of
gender, age, type of school, year of occupation and family participation studies. According to
the qualitative results of the research, it is observed that the cognitive maps of the pre-school
teachers' family participation studies (content and frequency) were informed about the family
participation studies, they were aware of the importance of the family participation studies
but they did not provide sufficient level in their applications. It was found that the attitudes of
the pre-school teachers towards the family participation studies were similar according to the
age, the type of graduated school and the year of occupation. It would not be appropriate to
make a comment since the number of male teachers and the number of prior educations is
very low according to teachers' gender and family participation studies. The fact that the
participants of the study were female teachers (30 female, 5 male) constitutes a limitation of
374
the research. Bayraktar et al., (2015) and Gömleksizoglu & Serhatoglu, (2013) in the research
conducted by women and male teacher attitudes are similar. According to another result, the
types of schools graduated from pre-school teachers did not affect their attitudes towards
family participation studies. This shows that the education of pre-school teachers before
performing the teaching profession is not effective in their attitudes towards family
participation. In other words, as the level of education that teachers received before
performing the profession increased, their attitudes towards family participation activities did
not change. This result supports the studies conducted by Bayraktar et al. (2015) and Sıvkın,
(2005). When the quantitative results obtained from this research are compared with the
qualitative results, the findings obtained from the cognitive maps of the preschool teachers
with the majority of the bachelor's degree (40%) revealed that the preschool teachers were
informed about the characteristics of the family participation studies (content and frequency)
but enough content in the application content. they did not. In other words, preschool
teachers are aware of the fact that family participation studies are theoretically aware of the
importance of family participation. Investigating the reasons that prevent teachers from
practicing will provide clues to increase the effectiveness of family participation studies.

Aile Katılım Çalışmalarına Yönelik Okul Öncesi Öğretmenlerinin Bilişsel Haritaları Ozana Ural, Marmara Üniversitesi Atatürk Eğitim Fakültesi, ORCID ID: 0000-0002-5067-3655 Gülşah Günşen, Trakya Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi, ORCID ID: 0000-0002-6882-5645 Öz Araştırmanın amacı okul öncesi öğretmenlerinin aile katılım çalışmalarına yönelik tutumlarının ve gerçekleştirmiş oldukları aile katılım çalışmalarının özelliklerinin (içerik ve yer verme sıklığı) belirlenmesidir.
406
araştırma sonuçları, öğretmenlerin etkili uygulamalar yapabilmesini sağlayan programların
geliştirilmesine destek sunacaktır.
