Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world, land locked by Rwanda, Tanzania and DR Congo. The capital is Bujumbura. Coffee production has suffered over the years from lack of security and investment but is start-ing to make a recovery. With great growing conditions Burundi produces some super fine african cups. These three micro lots come from three farm-er producer groups that are serviced by the cen-tral wet mill. The Canika farmer group consists of 263 members. The Mukerwa farmer group consists of 81 members. There are 210 members in the Rurira Farmer Group who each tend to around 300 trees. The coffee is fully washed at a central wet mill. It is dried on the 200 raised beds and stored in a well ventilated warehouse. The coffee is shade grown amongst other crops. Kirundo Province is in the north of Burundi. The region is slowly starting to regenerate its former reputation as Burundi’s principal agricul-tural producing region.

There are 450 members (including 45 female farmers) in the Mungaro cooperative that produce Kivu 4. We are really excited to have this coffee, firstly because the cup is fantastic and secondly because it is the first time we receive coffee from the Mungaro cooperative. The farms range from small holding 2 hectares with the larger farms cultivating up to 30 hectares. The soil is volcanic and chalky and very fertile and the area has two rainy seasons in the year. The coffee is shade grown, hand-picked and fully washed at the central wet mill. They use little or no agri-chemicals and farming is quite low intensity although the farmers have managed to pro-duce good yields. D.R Congo, the former Zaire, has been

a troubled nation, situated in the heart of the African continent, the people have suffered immeasurably from ongoing civil war and violence. Roads in the area are dangerous and poorly maintained which adds anoth-er dimension to the challenge of exporting the coffee safely. Overall It is fantastic to see small groups like the Mungaro group coming together to produce such a spectacular prod-uct. The farmers are happy with the results, now they are able to pay school fees for their children and afford some basic medical ex-penses. Overall the Mungaro group give a very positive impression, coming across as entrepreneurial and enthusiastic, steadily building a strong niche market and global reputation for excellent coffee.

The Narino region is predominantly known for producing a sweeter tasting cof-fee with very high acidity. The region has quite a unique geography and climate. Warm winds and plenty of sunshine keep the tem-peratures at moderate levels throughout the year. These conditions allow farmers to grow coffee at a very high altitude without the risk of frost, droughts or flooding.

At this dramatic elevation the air is ‘thin-ner’, having less oxygen which for coffee trees means that it takes more time to develop ripe cherries which results in more sophisticated acid structures which produce the sweeter flavours, characteristic of the region. The high acidity levels in the coffee are produced by the combination of volcanic soil and cold night temperatures.

Honey ProcessJaguar Honey

Costa Rica

What is Honey Process?

It is a process that started in Costa Rica and has spread to other countries in Central America. In this process some or all of the mucilage of the coffee cherry – or simply cof-fee honey – that coats the parchment is left on during the drying stage, giving the coffee a sweeter taste close to natural processed coffee. From the tree to the Beneficios, the coffee is picked, depulped and moved to patios or african beds where it will stay at least one week drying until it has reached the desirable point according to temperature and humidi-ty.

Why Honey Process?

Some farmers choose this process because of the benefits it has in comparison with other drying processes. The water usage is lower than in other processes and due to a shorter fermentation period the coffee acquires an acidity halfway between natural and washed coffees. In other words, farmers can produce cof-fees with some of the unqiue characteristics of natural processed coffee in less time and with lower risks of unexpected effects such as over-fermentation.

Jaguar preparation is exclusively received from farms above 1,500 meters in the Tarrazú region. Jaguar coffee is naturally fermented in tanks with latest technology; hulled in special hulling machines that do not damage the coffee beans; sun-dried in a controlled environment in greenhouses on top of a special plastic for protection; and, once the humidity is 11% it is immediately bagged in vacuum-sealed bags. All Volcafe farms must comply with Vol-cafe Way standards & regulations. Our Farmer

Support Organization (OAP) is in charge of providing technical assistance geared to contin-uously achieving the best sustainable quality of coffee considering the best social, environmen-tal, economic & agricultural practices. The Jaguar coffee is processed in an en-vironmental manner, it is depulped with an en-ergy efficient ecological system and dried with natural drying processes. Additionally, Volcafe donates $1 for every quintal sold to the Jaguar Conservation Program in Costa Rica.

Although Ethiopia has one of the highest do-mestic consumption figures of coffee for a pro-ducing origin - consuming around half of their production – plenty finds its way to our shores. Harrar or Harar is one of the oldest and most renowned coffee growing regions in Ethiopia. High altitudes and generations of experience in cultivation and processing result in the unique and intriguing characteristics of the Harrar Longberry.

The Blue Key bag marking is symbolic of Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage. The key, a met-aphor for unlocking secret treasures, is adorned with the Coptic Cross which is so reminiscent of Ethiopian culture, representing eternal life and everlasting love. The colour blue reflecting the great African skies over the Great Rift Valley. Ethiopia has a very unique and ancient history, it stands out amongst other African countries as the birth place of coffee.

Guatemala is revered as one of the most flavourful and nuanced cups in the world. Huehuetenango from the north highlands can be exceptional and have distinct fruit flavours. Huehuetenango is by far the most rugged and remote area in Guatemala. Thanks to the dry, hot winds that blow into the mountains from the Tehuantepec plain in Mexico, the region is protected from frost, allowing coffee to be cultivated up to 2000 masl.

Tres Marias mill is run by 3 generations of Marias in the family! They source their cher-ry from local farmers which determines the quality of the output. The mill does not keep records of which farmers they procure the cherry from so there is no traceability back to the trees. That said this mill conitnuosly produces a great coffee.

India

The Ratnagiri Estate has a global reputation for producing some of India’s finest washed arabica. The estate was established in 1923, handed down over three generations and is located in the Baba Budan mountain range where it is said the first coffee was planted in india by Bababuda – a pilgrim from Yemen. Shivappaiya Patre first purchased the estate in 1923 and named it the Rat-nagiri Estate, inspired by the beautiful mountains, the name translates to Pearl Mountain. The coffee is intercropped with black pepper and cardamom groves amongst many other native plants and trees providing shade for the coffee and conserving the natural environment. Every care is taken in processing and drying to produce a fine and sought after cup.

This coffee is named after Prabu Bunisora, an ancient ruler of the king-doms of Sunda and Galuh, reigning 1357-1371 AD. It has been produced specially and uniquely for the australian market. The same coffee was processed in three ways (fully washed, semi-washed. Both honey processed and Semi-Washed have now sold out and we can only offer the

fully washed. This flexibility and adaptability in process-ing demonstrates the versatility and quali-ty of these beans. Sunda is a large region of the island that is better known as Java. The King-dom of Sunda remains separate from that of Java. The coffee in Sunda and Java are fairly similar both with clean and quality atributes.

Situated 30km from the bustling town of Arusha, Mondul has the remote, romantic feeling of old Africa, yet still benefits from the modern advancements in agriculture without having to travel too far to get there. By sharing a border with the enormous Mondul Forest Reserve our neigh-bors are not only the Maasai people of local villages, but also the likes of buffalo, elephant and leopard. It is this atmosphere which makes Mondul an exciting place to grow coffee. With production on the rise, Mondul Coffee Estates continue their vision of being the top producer of high-quality washed Arabica in Tanza-nia. As any farm, they face various agronomical, climatic and local chal-lenges, but do so with vigour and enthusiasm. Strong attention to fertilizer and disease management are showing positive results in the field. Constant monitoring and evaluation goes into their most precious resource, water, as continue to develop the storage capacity on the farm.

Page 47: Cofi-Com Catalogue - August 2015 - version 2

Mondul estate was selected as “Annual coffee quality award” by TCA in 1998/99 ”In the cup, medium acidity (ma-lic) and a smooth body with promising flavor notes (honey and floral). Mondul Coffee Estate was established in 1931 by Count Vittorio Davico. His two sons are now running the Estate and pride themselves in producing the finest washed arabica coffee in Tanzania. Mondul Coffee Estate holds the Tanzania Coffee Assocation Quality Award for the 1998/99 and 2000/01 seasons. In March 2002 AFCA awarded the Estate the Certificate of Recognition for presenting “qualifying fine coffee” at the AFCA Cupping Competi-tion 2002 held in Kampala. The coffee is kept on a capped multiple-stem system and is rain-fed. Years of dedicated management have achieved average productions of 1500kg per ha with the following average grade percentage: AA 30%, AB 60%, PB 5%. The availability of clean spring water abstracted from the Monduli Forest Reserve contributes to the excellent quality of the coffee.

Running along the Congolese-Ugandan border lie the Rwenzori Mountains. After being referred to by a Greek geographer as Selenes oros, translating to Latin as Lunae Montes they became known in English as the Mountains of the Moon. They are in a particularly humid part of Equatorial Africa meaning they often sport an impressive amount of cloud cover. This misty impression has a glow to it, similar to moon light giving further reason for them to be named the Mountains of the Moon! It is a very impressive mountain range that towers up out of the plains where African Moon coffee grows. There is ample rain fall and the land is lush. The high altitude provides a super climate of hot summer days with cold win-tery nights allowing for stable growth and good cherry development. The region remains quite poor, despite the fertile land, furthermore coffee farming is low in-tensity. These days there is a lot more focus on the region and support for the local farmers. This lot is new to us but we love it, a clean, pleasant cupping natural sun-dried Ugandan arabica - appropriately named ‘African Moon’.

Yemen has one of the oldest relationships with coffee, like Ethiopia, with only a short stretch of water separating the two countries the terrain and varietals are very similar. Steep, arid mountainous land provides a breathtaking backdrop for Yemeni coffee farms. The farms are very basic and the coffee appears to be growing wild with absolute minimum input from man, this coffee, although not certi-fied, can be considered to be grown organically. The harvest is gathered at peak ripeness to create this fine natural Yemen Mocha coffee.

Nestled in a valley about 25km be-fore Chipinge town is the pictur-esque Tanganda Estate. The majestic mountain range surrounding Tan-ganda somehow lends a protective feeling to the estate which is known to have a special energy and sense of peace and tranquillity. It was first established in 1924. Early years concentrated mainly on tea cultivation with 80ha of coffee, SL28 and Caturra, following later. However, due to poor world prices and water shortages for irrigation these were stopped for a while. Today there are 66.5 ha of mature and 67.47ha immature coffee compris-ing of SL28, Catimor 129, Costa Rica and F6. An additional 40ha of coffee will be planted later this season. Mature Macadamia cover over 166 ha. The estate also holds a breeding herd of over 300 head of cattle as well as a small dairy. At an average altitude of 800m mean annual temperature is 20.5°C. Soils include loamy sand, sandy clay loams and sandy loam. Rainfall is below average at only 600mm though the surrounding hills receive an average of

The meandering Tanganda River supplies the water for irrigation which is gravity fed via a concrete furrow system into an under-ground pipe network throughout the es-tate. To ensure adequate water supplies a 60 megalitre reservoir was constructed in 2013. The reservoir is again fed by the Tanganda River and when necessary water is gravity fed back into the irrigation system. Excess water flows back into the Tanganda River with a pipe outlet to the neighbouring settlers providing them with a vital water source. A smaller river, the Waterfalls River, runs along the south side of the estate adja-cent to the main road though this is current-ly not utilised. The surrounding vegetation on the rough ground and on the hills is a tree savannah with a rich variety of tree and bush species. Our 1645 ha of bushland provides sanctu-ary for abundant birdlife, Vervet Monkeys, baboons, guinea fowl, hares and even Blue Duiker. Over the past year there has been the occasional Leopard sighting.

Many varieties of indigenous trees can be seen, with the most dominant being the Mnondo (Julbernardia globiflora ). Other trees include the famous Baobab (Adanso-nia), White Thorn (Acacia polyacantha), Velvet Bush Willow (Combretum molle),

Dwarf Red Combretum (Compretum platy-petalum), Weeping Wattle (Peltophorum af-ricanum), Wild Teak (Pericopsis angolensis), Camel’s Foot Tree (Piliostigma thonningii) and the Sausage Tree (Kigelia pinnata), to name just a few. There is also an assortment of exotic trees such as Eucalyptus, Jacaran-da (Jacaranda mimosifolia) and Pine Trees. A wide variety of fruit trees can be found around the estate and in the villages, com-prising mainly Paw Paw, Mango, Banana, Litchi, Avocado, Lemon and Guava. Depending on the season New Years’ Gift offers employment to 500-630 workers. The estate has various facilities available to em-ployees and their families as well as to near-by villages.

The estate has its own primary school with a small nursery school. Over 430 children are currently enrolled in the school. The children compete at district level and often at a regional level in Traditional Dancing, Sing-ing, Percussion, Athletics and Chess. There is also a small library and books are made available not only to the children but to em-ployees as well as the nearby cluster schools. A small clinic serves not only the labour force of 500+ and their families but is a central clinic for surrounding villages. The Nurse in Charge takes excellent care of the community but should any patient require critical care they are transported directly to Chipinge Hospital. For entertainment there is always the Beer Hall or sporting activities. Tanganda have an annual gala at which the five estates compete in Soccer, Netball, Volleyball, Tug-O-War and Darts. The Netball team won their section this year. Our soccer team, the New Year’s Gift Wolves have made Division 3 in the ZIFA league and play matches in the district on most weekends. They are very enthusiastic and are often invited to par-ticipate in other local galas. Supporters are never in short supply.

All in all New Year’s Gift Estate together with its inhabitants are actually more than a com-munity, more like one large family.
