Global WarmingJust the tip of the Iceberg

Our journey toward a Green Collar Economy:

1. Reducing our dependence on dirty energy

2. Developing our clean energy infrastructure

Page 5: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Green Economy

The green economy encompasses the economic activity related to reducing the use

of fossil fuels, decreasing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the

efficiency of energy usage, recycling materials, and developing and adopting

renewable sources of energy.

Page 6: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Green Employment

The “greening” of occupations refers to the extent to which green economy activities

and technologies increase the demand for existing occupations, shape the work and

worker requirements needed for occupational performance, or generate unique work

and worker requirements.

Page 7: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Impact of Code Green1. Green Increased Demand Occupations:

the work context changes not the tasks

2. Green Enhanced Skills Occupations:Tasks, skills, knowledge, credentials change

3. Green New and Emerging (N&E) Occupations:Creates the need for unique work and worker requirements – new occupations from existing

Legacy Dirty Energy Infrastructure

Toward aGreen Clean Energy Infrastructure

Page 12: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Who will take the leadChina is committed to overtaking the US in

electric cars, solar power, energy efficiency, batteries, nuclear power, and wind power

America is addicted to fossil fuels. America can hold the lead by ending its’ dependence on imported oil beginning with utilizing current technology and infrastructure.

Page 13: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Falling Behind? While the U.S. has been at a stand-still in developing nuclear power in the last 30 years, other countries are forging ahead.

http://webb.senate.gov/issuesandlegislation/Clean_Energy_Act_2009.cfm

France – with the lowest electric rates in Europe - now gets 80% of its electricity from nuclear power.

Japan’s nuclear fleet accounts for 35% of its electricity.

And January 2010 the United Kingdom announced plans to expand its reactor fleet.

Nanosolar Power PlantsGreen. Local. Profitable.

Deployable within months.

Page 22: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Benefit of Solar

• Easy to install• Resistant to severe weather • Alternative/Emergency power source • Energy Independence – Conserves Energy• Reduce Global Warming (Clean Source)• Reduces Maintenance• Improves Health

Page 23: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Issues of Solar

• Residential Cost $37,000

• “Sun Outages”February/March; September/October

• Solar Interference

• 6-10% Conversion Rate from sunrays intousable energy

Page 25: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.
Page 26: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Benefit of Marine Energy

• Capture the energy of the currents, rivers, irrigation canals, dam tailraces, Gulf Stream

• Zero-emission cleanliness - nonpolluting• Environmentally benign• Do not interfere with migration of fish or other animals

or ecology• Invisible from shore• Easier than wind to capture energy• Predictable – coordinates with gird demand• Not expensive

Page 30: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Issues with Marine Energy

• Could impact Kelp Forests– food for migrating gray whales

• Regulation– will take five or more years to get approval

• Lack of opportunity to evaluate impact• Converting to electricity a challenge• Only generate when tide is flowing

Page 32: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Benefits of 3rd Generation Nuclear

• Decreased capital expenses• Decreased time to build• Decreased probability of core melting• Minimal influence on environment• Decreased generation of radioactive waste• No Greenhouse Gas emission• Requires less area than alternative sources

Page 33: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

• Allocating bandwidth• No standardized data-centered protocol• Security• Support wide range of devices

Page 40: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Benefits of Vertical Farming• Maximize year-round agricultural yield• Feed localities – especially urban areas• No transportation cost• No chemical fertilizers and pesticides• One acre equivalent to six acre outdoor farm• Not subject to weather and pests• Former farmland return to natural state• Immediate consumption

Page 41: Code Green The New Red, White, and Blue. Overview Introduction: – Global Concerns – Defining Code Green Three Tipping Points 1.The Politics 2.Innovation.

Issues of Vertical Farming

• Initial phase costly• High demand for electricity• Fewer variety of foods• Use of “blackwater” for food production

Green Collar WorkforceCharacteristics

• Well-paid• Career-track jobs that contribute to preserving or enhancing

environmental quality• Local - producing wind towers and turbines close to home

• Strengthen Urban and Rural Communities – reinvestment• Rebuild a strong middle class• Pathways Out of Poverty:

access to effective training programs• New skill sets – Brand New

What is a green job?Any job that contributes to preserving or enhancing

environmental quality

What is a green-collar job?Green-collar jobs are well-paid, career track jobs

that contribute directly to preserving or enhancing environmental quality. If a job improves the environment, but doesn’t provide a family-supporting wage or a career ladder to move low-income workers into higher-skilled occupations, it is not a green-collar job.
