Principal
Rohan Keert As the term draws to a close I would like to reflect
on a few major events and thank all those involved. The Cobden
Technical School Debutante Ball was held on a cold wet and windy
night on Friday 15 June. Inside the Cobden Civic Hall was a
different story altogether. It was a warm, and joyous celebration
of the young men and women of our school. It was an absolutely
fantastic night. We were all so proud of our amazing students. I
would like to personally thank the CTS staff for their behind the
scenes support of this important event, in particular, Therese
Billings who did an amazing job organizing the event. Well done
everyone! Staffing At the end of this term, Stacey Henderson will
commence her family leave in the lead up to the birth of her third
child. On behalf of the CTS community, I would like to thank Stacey
for her commitment as classroom teacher and VCE Coordinator. We
wish her and Scott all the best for number three and look forward
to her return in 2020. Stacey’s Health & PE classes will be
covered by the highly regarded and very experienced duo of Neal
Simmonds and Ryan McCluggage. We will announce very soon who will
be VCE coordinator. Gracie McGuire will leave our school at the end
of Term 2. Gracie has been appointed to a new role as Year 5/6
teacher at St Mary’s Primary School Colac. I would like to thank
Gracie for her tremendous efforts to establish our literacy
intervention program. We have valued her input to school
improvement as Leader of Student Achievement and a member of the
CTS leadership Team. Jen McLennan will take over Gracie’s Year 9
English class and leadership of the literacy intervention program.
Leonie Wallace will be on long service leave for the last eight
weeks of Term 3. We welcome Ian Clarke who will teach Leonie’s
English classes until she returns in Term 4.

I would like to express a sincere thank you to Cass Crevola who
has been Acting Assistant Principal for the last six weeks of Term
2 while Michael Smart has been on long service leave. In her short
stint in the job, Cass was able to hit the ground running, picking
up various projects and completing them while initiating several
new processes that support the continued improvement of our school.
Cass has been able to form meaningful relationships with students,
staff and parents. Thank you Cass! We had a wonderful end of term
assembly this morning led by our School Captains and student
leaders. CTS staff presented a range of awards to individual
students for displaying the CTS HEART values (Honesty, Excellence,
Accountability, Respect and Trust). How a safe and relaxing winter
holiday break.
Assistant Principal
Cassandra Crevola Wellbeing Activity Day – Thursday 14th June We
were happy to be able to seek the input of the Student
Representative Council in determining how best to support student
wellbeing on the Activity Day. The student leaders were
particularly keen to implement activities for Years 7-10 students,
which we held on Thursday, 14th June. The students were very
enthusiastic about participating in activities at school, a BBQ
lunch shared with staff and Ten Pin Bowling in Colac and
Warrnambool. In the coming term, we’ll be looking at providing
activities for our senior students. Debutante Ball – Friday 15th
June The Debutante Ball was held on a cold and wet Friday evening,
but the weather did little to dampen the spirits of the excited
students, staff, families and friends who shared this annual event.
The students showed off their well-rehearsed dance moves to upbeat
music tracks that left a smile on everyone’s face. We were
thoroughly proud of the fine young adults presented on the evening
and grateful to share such a special moment with the CTS community.
Thank you to all involved in the preparations – we know that such a
big event only occurs with the thought and care of many supporters.
SRC Assembly and Activities The SRC did a spectacular job of
arranging this morning’s end-of-semester assembly, with many
students receiving a HEART Values award for Semester 1. We are also
looking forward to the Trivia Night on the Friday of Week 1 and the
upcoming bake sale – stay tuned for further details! Term Break

With term concluding today at 2:25pm, we wish all of our
students, families and the CTS community a safe and restful break.
We look forward to welcoming in Term 3 on Monday 16th July. On a
personal note, my short stay as Acting Assistant Principal at CTS
concludes today. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the
students, staff, families and community over the past six weeks.
I’d like to express my thanks for the support and for the warm
welcome that I have received during my time here.

Therese Billings The 2018 Debutante Ball was a marvellous
experience for all those participating, viewing or who were
involved in the smooth running of the night. All in all, the debs
looked fantastic and performed the dances well, thanks to the
training that Trevor and Ashlee provided. I would like to thank the
parents and staff who made my job so much easier than it might have
been for your support, either on the night or in the build up to
the ball. The stage looked marvellous, the supper provided was
delicious and plentiful, and the kitchen volunteers did a great job
all through the night. All that you do is appreciated and it makes
for a great night overall, so once again, THANK YOU.

BlazeAid
Term 2 has seen our school contribute in various ways to the
BlazeAid organisation. The Year 12 VCAL students have been
regularly assisting with both fencing and working at the campsite.
They have also been helping out at the relief centre set up at the
Cobden Uniting Church. Well done students and Mrs Hickey. We were
rostered on to provide an evening meal for the volunteers a few
times. Once at the school’s Home Economics Room and again at the
Kart Club where a good old fashioned roast was the flavour of the
day. Thank you to all staff and students who contributed on these
evenings. To our VET students who have been supplying biscuits etc.
from their Thursday VET days. Thank you. To the BlazeAid workers,
our school thanks you for your time and dedication in getting our
community back on track after the devastating St. Patrick’s Day
fires.
Maths
Coke Investigation The past few weeks we have been studying
measurement in math. The year 9 classes have been focusing on
surface area of a 3D shape. This week we did a project where we had
to find the surface area of the two boxes that hold 12 cans of soft
drink, our two options were a three by four or a two by six. We
were put into groups of four or five and had to measure an empty
can of soft drink, then used the formulas that we have learnt to
work out which box uses less cardboard. We made nets to prove our
findings. Once finished our findings were that the three by four
box used less cardboard. Each group presented their results to
their classmates. It was fun and enjoyable! Popcorn Investigation
Today year 9 math students investigated the volume of a cylinder
using popcorn. The class really enjoyed it because they were doing
hands on work that involved math. The students learnt a lot more by
doing an investigation than just writing notes and feel that this
made it stick in their minds better. They learnt the formula for
the volume of a cylinder and that the radius has a bigger effect on
how much a cylinder can hold. The class was really engaged and also
had to work on their group work skills, helping each other and
working independently. It was challenging and positive that the
teacher didn’t just tell us the work but we were really happy when
we were able to figure things out ourselves. Overall it was messy
and fun and we all loved the popcorn!

Intermediate Boys Friday June 15th at Terang It was not much warmer
inside than outside at the Terang Sports Stadium on Friday the 15th
of June when our Intermediate boy’s basketball team took on some of
the local school rivals. Our first game was at 9.40 where we played
the Terang College team 1 boys, which was a close game. A tough
game to open with. Next, we played the second Terang College
intermediates and we won a close game. After nearly an hour's
break, we took on the Mercy Regional College team, which gave us a
good reminder we have to be on our game all the time, every second.
They gave us the chance to be graceful losers...Virtually
straightaway we came up against a very close game with Timboon P12
intermediates. We lost, but only just. To finish the day we were
pitted against Camperdown College and we were doing just great
until a bit after half time when things turned tight. In the end,
they snuck away with a victory in a very close and hard fought
game. A 'well done' to our intermediate boys’ team for giving a
red-hot go. It is amazing the amount of food they put away until
you see the energy they put into a game. Also a big thank you to
Belinda Savage who umpired and scored nearly all day and lastly, to
Mr. Bouman who very kindly came to coach the team. Results from
Basketball are as follows. Intermediate Boys 1st Mercy 2nd Camp 3rd

views on diversity in our community. The boys then played a
football game, the first half was played with Cobden v Clontarf,
but the second half was played in mixed teams. The Warrnambool
