In Depth Game Day Preview Marquee MatchUp – Concordia Wide Receivers vs. Hamline Secondary If there was ever a game to break out and start becoming a threat, this would be the one. The Cobbers’ wide outs have a grand total of 23 catches in the team’s first four games. If you’re scoring at home, that’s 5.75 receptions per game. The Piper secondary enters the game having allowed 506 total yards against St. John’s and 288 of that through the air. Hamline is currently seventh in the league, allowing 240.5 yards per game. A more balanced attack will serve the Cobbers well as they begin to enter the “meaty” part of the 2005 schedule. Marquee MatchUp Part Deaux – Concordia “Hands” People vs. Hamline Defense We’ve seen this one before and it is a trend that Concordia will have to improve on if they will be able to stay atop the MIAC. In their first four games, the Cobbers have fumbled the ball 16 times (only losing six). That is an average of four per game and sooner or later the odds are going to catch up with the offense. The turnover theme reared its head against Carleton and allowed the Knights to stay close. The Pipers enter the game ranked 11 th in the nation in turnover margin and have caused 10 fumbles, recovering nine. The Coaches Concordia head coach Terry Horan (Concordia ’89) is in his fifth year as head football coach at Concordia College. Last season he helped the Cobbers to an 111 overall mark and a perfect 80 MIAC record and the program’s 18 th conference title. For his efforts he was named the AFCA Region Coach of the Year as well as the MIAC Coach of the Year. He has compiled a 258 conference record and a 3012 overall mark in his first four seasons. Paul Miller is 21 in his first season at the helm of the Pipers. Before Hamline, Miller coached at Apple Valley High School for 17 seasons, earning three Prep Bowl appearances, including two AA championships in 1986 and 1993. Gameday Preview Middle Management Concordia is outscoring its opponents 9427 in the second and third quarters this season. The Cobbers have only given up two touchdowns in the second quarter and two in the third quarter. This has become somewhat of a trend the past two seasons. Last year, Concordia held a 23493 edge in the middle quarters of the game. Record Watching and Waiting and Waiting and Waiting.... Concordia kicker Brian Halverson (Sr., Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) tied head coach Terry Horan for most career points in program history. Halverson recorded six points against the Gusties and is now at 200 points for his career. He also set a program record for the longest field goal. Halverson knocked home a 45yard field goal at the end of the second quarter to break the old mark of 42 yards held by Clayton Horgen (’00). “There’s Nothing To This College Game” Concordia freshman running back Cory Johnson (Moorhead, Minn.) has scored a touchdown in each of his first four collegiate games. He is currently tied for second on the team in scoring with 24 points. He also leads the team in rushing. He is averaging 102.2 yards per game in his first four games. “What He Said” Another Concordia freshman is also among the league leaders. Levi DeVries (Bejou, Minn./Mahnomen HS) is leading the league in punt return average. DeVries has eight returns in the team’s first three conference games and is averaging 10.4 yards per return. Against Gustavus on Saturday, he had 56 total punt return yards on four returns. He also came up with his longest return of the year when he ran back a punt in the second quarter for 37 yards. Nationally Speaking Individually, Concordia only has two defensive players ranked among the national leaders. Mark Halley is 15 th in forced fumbles (0.5/game) and Tyler Ledyard is 30 th in sacks per game (1.1). As a team the Cobbers are ranked in the top 40 of the nation in four different statistical categories. The highest ranking for Concordia is rushing offense. The Cobbers are seventh in the nation in rushing yards per game (302.0). Defensively, Concordia ranks 17 th in rushing defense (73.8 yds/game). They also rank 24 th in total defense (266.2) and 34 th in scoring defense (15.8 pts/game). Hamline senior strong safety Tyler Schultz is third in interceptions per game (1.3). He is also 23 rd in passes defended (1.8/game). Schultz’ defensive teammates, Paul Klees and Darryl Sledge, rank 15 th in forced fumbles (0.5/game). As a team, the Pipers rank 11 th in turnover margin. They are a +2 in turnovers per game.

MOORHEAD— Andrew Passanante collected over 200 yards in receiving, Brian Schumacher threw for five TD's and Concordia rolled to a 420 Homecoming win over Hamline. It marks the first time that the Cobbers have posted a shutout since October 30, 1999, when they beat Macalester 400. The victory keeps the Cobbers unbeaten on the year, pushing their MIAC record to 40 and their overall mark to 50. Hamline slides to 13 in the conference and 23 overall.
Schumacher finished the game by going 20for29 and throwing for 290 yards. Passanante caught 12 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Shawn Reile turned in another bigplay game for the Cobbers. The senior wideout caught five passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns. It marks the second straight week that Passanante and Reile have caught two touchdowns and Schumacher has thrown for five touchdowns. On the ground, Schumacher led the way with 13 carries for 56 yards. Travis Christensen finished 44 yards on 11 touches.
Overall, Concordia racked up 591 yards of total offense. That is the most for the Cobbers since last year when they played the Pipers and totaled 598 yards. Concordia finished the day with 229 yards in rushing and 362 passing yards.
The Concordia defense returned to their stingy ways by only allowing 14 rushing yards and 142 yards of total offense. The Cobbers also came away with three interceptions as they put pressure on the Hamline quarterbacks all game long.
A trio of seniors was the catalyst for the Cobber defensive unit. Jordan Talge came away with two interceptions and had five tackles. Josh Dietz and Doug Runke continue to be an immovable object in the middle. Dietz finished with 11 tackles and Runke added 10.
Hamline quarterback Andy Gagnon was 15of25 for 126 yards. Chris Cushenberry collected a teamhigh 11 tackles for the Hamline defense.

Terry Horan is in his fifth year as head football coach at Concordia College. In 2002 and again in 2004 he was named the MIAC Coach of the Year. In 2004 he guided the Cobbers to their first outright MIAC championship since the 1986 season. The team went a perfect 80 in conference play and ended the year with an 111 overall record. The 11 overall wins ties a program record for most wins in a season, and their 11 wins to start the season tied a school record for most consecutive wins in a season. At the end of the season, the Cobbers were ranked ninth in all three major NCAA Division III polls the highestever finish for a Concordia team.
For his efforts he was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.
In his first four seasons at the helm, he has compiled a 258 conference record and a 3012 overall mark. The 25 conference wins are the most by any coach in the history of the football program in their first four years. Also, the 30 overall victories, ties legendary coach Jim Christopherson for the most total wins by a Cobber coach in the first four years on the job.
Horan succeeded Christopherson who retired after 32 years as Concordia's head coach. Before coming to Concordia Horan was the head football coach at Breckenridge High School for six years.
A 1989 graduate of Concordia, Horan began his coaching career in 1991 as an assistant coach at Breckenridge. In the fall of 1993 he took over as head coach and guided the Cowboys to three state tournament appearances in the four years, from 199396, he coached. During that time Breckenridge reached the state title game in 1995 and was a semifinalist in 1994 & '96. In 1997, he returned to Concordia to serve as wide receivers coach and athletic recruiting coordinator. After two years he proceeded to move back to Breckenridge to become the dean of students at the middle school and resume his head coaching duties at the high school. In his two stints as head coach at Breckenridge his teams amassed a 5615 record and he was named Section Coach of the Year three times and HeartO'Lakes Coach of the Year three times.
Horan was an AllAmerican while playing at Concordia from 198588. He holds the school record for most receptions and touchdowns in a single season as well as for a career and he is also the alltime scoring leader for the Cobbers. He was a three time AllMIAC performer and garnered AllAmerican status in his senior year. Horan was also an AllMIAC Baseball player in 1989 and has a career batting average of over .350.
Horan is only the eighth football coach in the school's 81 seasons of collegiate football. Before Horan, Christopherson had been the head coach since 1969 when he took over the position from Hall of Fame coach Jake Christiansen. During the 32 years under Christopherson's tutelage, the Cobbers won two national championships and captured the MIAC crown 11 times.
Horan and wife Michelle, a 1992 Concordia graduate, live in Moorhead with their three children Meghan, Thomas and Tate.

GAME 1 MSU MOORHEAD 12 at CONCORDIA 29
Recap – Despite fumbling three times and throwing for less than 100 yards, the Cobbers used enough big plays to outlast crosstown rival MSUMoorhead 2912 and claim their third straight Power Bowl victory. The victory for the Cobbers in Power Bowl VII was sealed by the strength of two plays. Trailing 63 towards the end of the first quarter, Mark Halley intercepted an errant Eric Schaumburg pass and raced 67 yards for the score. The play put a halt to a shift in momentum after the Dragons had recovered a fumble on the very first play from scrimmage after they scored their first touchdown of the year.
The game was then broken open on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. Freshman running back Cory Johnson swept around the right end and outran the entire MSU Moorhead defense for a 67yard touchdown scamper. It was Johnson's very first run of his collegiate career and gave Concordia a 226 lead with only 16 seconds gone in the third quarter.
Concordia senior quarterback Brian Schumacher continued his ability to move the Cobbers in the clutch. He finished the game with only 18 rushing yards but was able to run the ball over from one yard out to give Concordia a 166 lead at the start of the second quarter.
Tyler Ledyard set a Power Bowl record by recording two sacks in the game for the Cobbers. He also finished with four other tackles. Mark Halley was the game's leading tackler. He had seven total tackles to go along with his interception return. He was named the Most Electrifying Defensive Player of the Game and also earned the Power Surge Play of the Game for his firstquarter score. Senior AllMIAC defensive end Travis Almquist started his final season with a solid performance. Almquist had 5.5 tackles and accounted for one sack.
Johnson injected life into the Cobber offense from his very first play. After Nick Reinisch carried the load in the first half, Johnson rambled for a gamehigh 91 yards in the final two quarters of play.

Recap – As much as things change, things remain the same when you play Concordia – you better be able to stop the run or you will be in for a long afternoon.
The Cobbers used a page out of their traditional playbook to beat St. Thomas 3021 and run their conference winning streak to 11 games. Concordia has not lost a game in the MIAC since the middle of the 2003 season.
Against the Tommies on Saturday at Jake Christiansen Stadium in front of a Parent’s Weekend crowd of 3,650, Concordia rushed for 357 yards and racked up over 400 total offensive yards in running to the 11point victory. Freshman Cory Johnson backed up his performance in the opener against MSU Moorhead by slicing his way to 168 yards on 11 carries. He also sealed the game for the Cobbers when he ripped off a 38yard run on a draw play in the fourth quarter to give Concordia a 3114 lead with only 2:52 remaining.
Johnson’s 168 rushing yards represent the most for a Cobber running back since the 2003 season when Bobby Clark rushed for 182 yards against Augsburg.
Defensively, a pair of linebackers dominated the line of scrimmage. Ubbelohde, St. Thomas’ AllAmerican candidate, was all over the field, recording a gamehigh 14 tackles, forcing one fumble, posting one sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss. His Concordia counterpart, Mark Halley, had nine tackles, one forced fumble, one sack and 1.0 tackles for a loss.
The Cobbers’ defensive front line was bolstered by the return of Greg Mantz. Mantz, who suffered a dislocated hip in the preseason, was one of five Cobbers who were credited with being part of a sack. Tyler Ledyard led the team with 1.5 sacks, marking the second consecutive game that he has been the team leader. He now has 3.5 sacks in two games. Travis Almquist joined the sack patrol, recording one sack and 2.0 tackles for a loss.

Recap – It wasn't the prettiest win, but in the end Concordia held off a feisty Carleton team on a goal line stand at the end of the game and escaped with a 3931 win over the Knights in Northfield.
The victory keeps Concordia's conference winning streak intact. The Cobbers have now won 12 straight MIAC games, a streak that dates back to the middle of the 2003 season. Concordia remains perfect on the 2005 season as they move to 20 in league play and 30 overall. Carleton drops to 02 in the MIAC and 12 overall.
The story line for the game was Concordia's inability to hang onto the football at key moments and Carleton's ability to come up with the big play. The Cobbers turned the ball over three times against the Knights, and Carleton had six plays that went for 25 or more yards. It could have been worse for the Cobbers as Carleton only recovered two of the four fumbles that found their way onto the turf.
Carleton's sophomore running back R.J. Jackson was a oneman wrecking crew for Carleton. His ability to come up with huge plays kept the Knights in the game until the very end. Jackson ran a kickoff back 81 yards for a score and had several other long gains in the game. He finished with 227 total yards and two touchdowns.
Concordia continues to punish opposing defenses on the ground. After opening the season by amassing 252 rushing yards against MSU Moorhead and then racking up 357 yards against St. Thomas in the MIAC opener, the Cobbers pounded the Knights for 340 yards. Concordia ran the ball 61 times against Carleton and has now rushed the ball 168 times in the first three games.
For the game, Concordia outgained Carleton 393300. The Cobbers were held to only 53 passing yards. Concordia's defense allowed only 81 rushing yards on 31 carries. It marks the second time in three games that the tough Cobber run defense has not allowed an opponent to gain over 100 yards on the ground.

Recap – On a perfect day for Homecoming, 15thranked Concordia treated Cobber alumni, fans and friends to their first overall game of the season as they blanked Gustavus 300. Concordia senior kicker Brian Halverson also treated the Homecoming fans to a pair of program records. Halverson knocked home a 45yard field goal at the end of the first half to set a record for longest field goal in a game. He also totaled six points, which brings his career total to 200 and ties head coach Terry Horan for most career points.
The Concordia defense put the clamps on a struggling Gustavus offense, allowing only 153 yards of total offense. That included only 21 rushing yards and a mere nine yards of total offense in the fourth quarter. Concordia racked up 259 rushing yards against a defense that was only allowing 111 yards on the ground entering the game. The Cobbers finished with 364 total offensive yards. That marks the fourth straight game that Concordia has gained over 330 yards.
Concordia had eight different players with positive rushing numbers. Freshman Cory Johnson led the Cobbers with a gamehigh 69 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. Kevin Williamson had 63 yards on 12 carries. Tyler Anderson had a solid game in the backfield for the offense. He rushed for 39 yards on only six carries. His 6.5 yards per carry average was highlighted by a sharp, cutback 19yard run that produced the Cobbers' third touchdown. Anderson also had one reception for 34 yards, which was the games longest play from scrimmage.
Defensively, Matt Kleber had his best game as a Cobber. He had a team high 9.0 tackles, including 1.0 sacks and 1.0 tackles for a loss. He also came up with one of the three Concordia interceptions. Tanner Radermacher had one interception to go along with 5.0 tackles. Ben Aakre finished off the interception trio by coming up with his second interception of the year on an athletic play in the second quarter that set up Halvorson's recordbreaking field goal. Tyler Ledyard was held without a sack for the first time this season, but was picked up by a Concordia defense that sacked Gustavus quarterback Jordan Stolp three times. Besides Kleber, Cody Martinson and Adam Peterson also recorded a quarterback sack.
