The study

Overall aim: To develop novel ways to incorporate coastal ecosystem services into spatial biodiversity planning and management.

Objectives: 1) To map ecosystem services along the South African coast2) To test the EI approach as a mechanism to embed coastal services into

spatial biodiversity planning processes3) To incorporate ecosystem services into local coastal management

processes4) To estimate the social benefits of incorporating ecosystem services into

coastal biodiversity planning and management

Services of highest demand in SA:1) Provisioning: e.g. invertebrate harvesting 2) Regulating and Maintenance: e.g. coastal protection 3) Cultural: e.g. recreation

Evaluate and prioritize coastal EIEcosystem service: coastal protection

Estimate the potential capacity to deliver the service: high, medium, low

Estimate the condition of the ecosystem:healthy, degraded, transformed

Identify supporting areas for service delivery (‘supporting ‘Ecological Infrastructure)

Adapted from Holness et al. 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017

Set targets for Ecological Infrastructure protection

Feedback

Objective 1 + 2:

• Which scale would be appropriate to conduct the coastal Ecological Infrastructure analysis, e.g. regional or national?

• Targets for EI protection?

• And did I miss something essential for the prioritization?

Objective 4:

• Opinions on monetary analysis?

General feedback on the study?
