Under the direction of Coach Mitzel, theprogram has come a long way. When shebecame the Tigers’ coach in 1997, the teamplayed its games on a grass field behind theTowson Center. Towson was a member ofAmerica East at the time and very few playersreceived any type of regional or nationalrecognition.

Now, the Tigers play their home gameson the articificial surface of JohnnyUnitas® Stadium. They are members of theCAA, one of the toughest field hockeyleagues in the nation. Plus, the Tigers haveat least one player named to the all-regionteam in four of the last five years.

After winning only threegames in their first three CAA seasons, the Tigers went 3-5 in leagueplay and earned their first CAA Tournament berth. The Tigers earned the CAA Tournament berth by finishing the confer-ence season with three wins in their last four CAA games, beatingDelaware and Drexel on the road. Towson finished the season withan overall record of 9-10.

While playing the last four seasons in the rugged CAA, the Tigers have won 32 gamesduring that time. Over the last four years,Towson is 26-20 in non-conference games.

However, Coach Mitzel’s most significantcontribution to the field hockey programmight be stability. She has won more gamesand coached more games than any otherTiger coach.

Last year, the Tigers opened the seasonwith five straight wins and just barely missedposting a winning record with their finalmark of 9-10. They also made the CAA Tour-nament for the first time as they finished sixthin the nine-team league.

The Tigers accomplished these feats withthree freshmen and four sophomores in theregular starting lineup.

In 2004, they posted a 6-14 overall recordagainst a tough schedule. Although the Tigerswere winless in seven CAA games, five oftheir losses were one-goal decisions and threeof the losses were overtime verdicts.

The Tigers also had their first playerhonored as a first team All-CAA selectionwhen Julie Lambi was honored. The leadingscorer in Towson history with 44 goals and23 assists, she was named first team all-regionfor the second time.

In 2003, the Tigers posted a 7-11 finalrecord, the third-highest single season total inschool history. Along the way, the Tigersposted impressive non-conference victoriesover Georgetown and Maine.

In 2002, their first season in the very chal-lenging CAA, the Tigers posted their firstwinning season since 1996.

As Towson posted a 10-9 record, the Tigersdoubled their victory total from the previousseason. It was their fourth winning season inthe program’s history. The ten wins were thesecond-highest win total in school history.

The Tigers’ 6-1 start was also the best startin school history. It earned the Tigers mentionin the NCAA Division I Top 20 weekly pollfor the first time.

In May of 2003, she was honored as thewinner of the Towson University Coach ofthe Year award for women’s sports. It wasan honor that was voted on by her colleaguesat Towson.

Coach Mitzel has been steadily buildingthe program while playing a very difficultschedule every season. In 2001, the Tigerswere much better than their 5-14 recordwould suggest. With a very young team,Towson lost four games in overtime and sixlosses came by one-goal margins.

The Tigers did close the season on a verypositive note, winning their last two games.Towson beat Albany and Vermont on the lastweekends of the season.

In the 2000 season, Towson played sixteams that went to the NCAA Tournamentand earned a 2-1 overtime win against Stan-ford. That victory was the highlight of aseason which saw Towson post a 4-16 record.

One of the most positive developments forthe program came in 1999 when the Tigersplayed their first season on an artificialplaying surface at home.

In 1997, her first season at Towson, she ledthe Tigers to a 7-11 record, one of the highestvictory totals in the history of the program.Towson overcame a slow start, a period inwhich the Tigers were shut out in five straightgames and lost six of their first seven contests. The Tigers rebounded to win six of their finaleleven games. The Tigers’ most significantwin was a 3-1 victory over America Eastpower Boston University. In her secondseason, Towson was 6-14.

Since becoming the Tigers’ coach nine yearsago, Coach Mitzel has expected academic andathletic success from her student-athletes. In2001, 16 of the Tigers’ 22 players were namedto the America East Academic Roll, whichrecognizes players who have achieved a 3.00grade point average or higher during thesemester in which they compete.

In 2002, the Tigers placed 11 players onthe National Field Hockey Coaches Associa-tion (NFHCA) Division I National AcademicTeam. Only Stanford (15), LaSalle (14), WestChester (13), Old Dominion (12) and Yale(12) placed more student-athletes on the team.

Last year, the Tigers placed 11 players onthe NFHCA Division I National AcademicTeam. In the last four years, they have had38 players honored.

A 1992 graduate of Penn State University, the former Lynette Kidder came to Towsonfrom Harvard University, where she was theassistant field hockey coach for three years. While at Harvard, Mitzel organized theHarvard Indoor Tournament, oversaw theHarvard Youth program, and ran the off-season conditioning program in addition toher on-field, in-season duties. The Tiger coach has been involved in theUnited States Field Hockey AssociationFutures program for the past six years. Afterserving as an assistant coach in Cambridge,Massachusetts for three years, she was theprogram’s head coach for one year.

Upon receiving her B.S. degree in ExerciseScience in 1992, Mitzel took a position asthe junior varsity head coach at State College

Area High School. A Lemont, Pa. native, sheplayed field hockey and graduated fromSCAHS.

Last season, the Tigers enjoyed their first taste of the Colonial AthleticAssociation Tournament as they earned the number six seed.

Despite a first round loss to Hofstra, the Tigers are quite anxious toreturn.

“Last year we found out what it was like to be part of the CAATournament,” says Coach Lynette Mitzel. “Now, we are very eagerto return and this time we want to stay longer.

“Our late-season success carried us through our springpractice even though we were hampered by injuries,” shesays. “But, we could sense that making the tournamentgave the team a renewed focus and an excitementabout the upcoming year.”

Last season, the Tigers rallied from an 0-4CAA start to win three of their last four leaguegames and earn the sixth and final playoffposition. Most impressively, the Tigers qual-ified for the CAA Tournament by winningroad games at Delaware and Drexel.

Although the Tigers finished theseason with an overall record of 9-10,they ended the season with momen-tum and a sense of accomplishment.

Starting her tenth season as the Tigers’coach, Mitzel has 13 returning letter winners, including nine starters. Among those nineveterans are three sophomores who startedevery game last year.

“This is one of the most experiencedteams we’ve ever had,” says the Tiger coach.“Even though we have a number of youngplayers, they all saw significant playing timelast year.”

In addition to the team’s veteran nucleus,Coach Mitzel feels the Tigers’ freshman classis an outstanding one. She says, “we havesix freshmen with the potential to have greatcollege careers and make a huge impact onthis program.”

Despite the loss of top scorer EmilySwartz to graduation, the Tigers should bea potent team offensively. Last year, theTigers scored 40 goals in 19 games as eightplayers tallied at least three goals.

“We have the ability to score a lot of goalsthis year,” says Mitzel. “We have an abun-dance of talent on the forward line and wehave a good number of players on the rosterwho can score from anywhere on the field. This group has the potential to give us verybalanced scoring.”

One of three seniors on the roster, EricaHouck is one of the Tigers’ top scoringthreats. A two-year starter after transferringfrom the University of Iowa, she scored fivegoals and had two assists last season.

“Erica has phenomenal stickwork andan excellent passing ability,” says Mitzel.“She is a very smart player and does a greatjob setting up other players in front of thenet. One of her best assets is her ability tocreate penalty corner opportunities. Her con-tributions don’t always show up on thescoresheet but her teammates know whatshe contributes.”

Speedy Kajee Murangi is another return-ing starter at forward who has tremendouspotential. As a sophomore, she also scoredfive goals with two assists.

“Kajee brings tremendous speed to ourteam,” says Mitzel. “She is a much smarterplayer now and knows how to use her speedto her advantage. She is a tremendous threatinside the 25-yard line.”

A pair of freshmen, Christina Boarmanand Libby Grange, should make the Tigers’offense even more potent.

Boarman, a first team All-State selection

the last two years, was a four-year starter atSt. Paul’s School in the Baltimore area.Named first team All-Metro three years in arow, she was a four-year starter for the Cru-saders. As a senior, she scored nine goalswith seven assists.

“Christina brings some outstanding high-level experience to our program,” saysMitzel. “Not only has she participated inFutures and played in the Junior Olympics, but she was also a member of the Under-16National team and this summer she wasselected to play in the Can-Am games. Shecomes into our program with better creden-tials than any other freshman we’ve ever had.She is a goal scorer and should make animmediate impact.”

A four-year starter at Delaware’s Mid-dletown High School, Grange earned firstteam All-State honors as a senior. She scoredthree goals with eight assists while leadingher team to a 12-5 record. Grange has alsoled her club team, the Strikers, to five straightappearances at the National Indoor Tour-nament.

“Libby is another very experienced fresh-man,” says Mitzel. “She has tremendousquickness and will help us attack the goalthis year.”

Veteran Dana Wassum could also con-tribute up front. Mitzel says, “We arehopeful Dana will be able to play for us thisfall. She has a recurring shin injury that pre-vented her from seeing a lot of time last falland spring. With continued rehab, sheshould help us move the ball upfield.”

Senior Kim McEwen leads a veryexperienced Tiger midfield. Atwo-year starter in the midfieldand co-captain last season,McEwen scored three goalsand had two assists.

“Kim is going to be avery important player forus this season,” saysMitzel. “With hercomposure, steadyplay and passingability, she willsolidify our teamin the middle ofthe field. Overthe last fewyears, she hasbecome a

much smarter player and has worked hardto improve her stickwork. Kim can be anoffensive threat in the circle.”

Joining McEwen in the midfield are soph-omores Maureen Meara, Stephanie Kisic andLaura Schnell. All three players are comingoff impressive freshman seasons in whichthey started every game. Meara earned a spoton the CAA’s All-Rookie team.

“Maureen had a really good freshmanyear for us,” says Mitzel. “We are confidentthat she will continue to build on theprogress she made last season. She workedhard in the off-season and she has gottenstronger and quicker.”

Mitzel adds, “Stephanie is a relentlessplayer who has a lot of quickness andhustle. Her off-season work has made herinto a bigger threat on the field. She seespasses better, has improved herelimination skills, and is anoverall better player.”“Laura is a tenaciousplayer who did agreat job as a fresh-man,” says thecoach. “Shehas goodstick-

work and improved her foot speed since last season, which is a hugeasset playing on the turf.”

Sophomore Danielle Wacker and freshman Angie Brewer willadd depth in the midfield.

Wacker, who saw action in 17 games as a freshman, is comingoff a very good spring. Mitzel says, “Danielle is one of the hardestworkers on our team. She had a great spring and will see more actionthis year. Through her hard work, she has improved her strengthand quickness, and her game knowledge. It was exciting to watch herplay with more confidence this spring.”

A four-year starter at Annville-Cleona High School in Pennsylva-nia, Brewer was a first team all-league selection as a junior and senior.

“Angie is a very smart player who played against excellent com-petition in high school,” says Mitzel. “Like our other freshmen, shehas a lot of experience at a high level and she will contribute in herfirst season with our program.”

The Tiger defense will be led by juniors Kelli Richards and GabbyMink, a pair of two-year starters.

Richards was the Tigers’ second-leading scorer with five goalsand six assists last season.

Mitzel says, “Kelli is a very solid and consistent player. She has alot of game experience and she gives us the added dimension of havingan attacker from the defense.”

Honored as the CAA Player of the Week last October, Mink scoredfour goals and had one assist. In the Tigers’ biggest game of lastseason, she scored two goals, including the game-winner in over-time, as the Tigers beat Drexel, 2-1, earning a berth in the CAA Tour-nament. She was also honored as the ECAC Player of the Week forher performance.

“Gabby is one of our team leaders,” says Mitzel. “She is a smartdefender who can also put the ball in the cage, particularly on penaltycorners.”

Freshmen Ellen Meara, Ashley Evans and Jamie Perez will alsocompeting for starting spots on the defense.

The younger sister of Maureen Meara, Ellen Meara was an hon-orable mention All-State pick at Delaware’s Concord High School lastyear. A three-time All-Blue Hen Conference selection, she has beena member of the Futures Program for three years.

“Ellen is a very smart defender who is extremely consistent,” saysMitzel. “She should help give us depth in the backfield this season.”

A teammate of Grange at Middletown High School, Evans wasan all-conference performer as a senior. Mitzel describes her as “a soliddefender who has plenty of experience.”

A four-year starter at Glenelg Country Day School, Perez gives theTigers good size on the defense. A 5-9 defensive standout who playedfor the Ocelots Club team, she will give the Tigers some quality depth.

“Jamie brings a lot of experience to our team,” says Mitzel. “Shecontinually works hard to improve her game and will be a great addi-tion to our backfield.”

A second-year performer on defense, sophomore Katie Martinwill also compete for playing time. Her progress has been hamperedby injuries but her knowledge of the collegiate game makes her avaluable reserve.

The Tigers’ third senior, Christina Armer, returns as the team’sgoalkeeper for her third year as the team’s starter.

Armer has played in 42 career games and played for more than2600 minutes in her career. She has a .741 save percentage. As ajunior, she made 109 saves, second in the CAA, while allowing 2.21goals per game.

“Christina has the ability to be one of the best goalkeepers in theCAA,” says Mitzel. “She had a very good season last year but shecould be even better. She has tremendous athletic ability and excel-lent quickness and we need her to be a leader by example. With moreconfidence and maturity, she should be able to maintain focus andhandle anything that comes her way.”

Armer will be backed up by junior goalkeeper Michelle Cheek, who appeared in seven games last year.

“Michelle is very important to our program,” says Mitzel. “Sheneeds to continue to work on her quickness and decision making. We need her to gain more experience and get more comfortable asour goalkeeper.”

While acknowledging that her team made significant progresslast season, Mitzel feels that the Tigers are much more competitivein the CAA as they enter their fifth season of CAA membership. Intheir first three seasons of CAA play, the Tigers had a 3-18 record.Last year, they were 3-5 in the CAA and made the playoffs.

“Regardless of scores, I feel we are competing much better in theCAA,” she says. “In the past, I don’t think we had the confidence thatwe needed to win in the CAA. Now our players know they can

contend with anyone in the CAA.” Mitzel enters the season with a team that she believes is the best

she’s ever coached. She says, “for the third year in a row, we had a very good recruit-

ing class. We now have a team that has speed, confidence, experienceand talent. We are a smart team and we are not slow at any positionthis year.”

Mitzel says that competing in the CAA is always a challenge. Sheadds, “we have several very strong programs in the CAA that are inthe hunt for an NCAA Tournament berth every year. Old Dominion,James Madison and William & Mary are always nationally-rankedteams and the addition of Northeastern, another nationally-rankedteam, makes the CAA even stronger.”

“We want to be at the top of the next group in the CAA and beregular contenders for the CAA Tournament.” she says. “We feelthat is a goal that is well within our grasp.”

Coming off one of the most successful seasonsin its 21-year history, the Colonial AthleticAssociation continues to enhance its reputa-tion as one of the nation’s top collegiate con-ferences.

With a geographic footprint that stretchesfrom Boston to Atlanta, the CAA encom-passes five of the nation’s nine largest metro-politan areas. On the playing field, theconference has produced 16 national teamchampions in five different sports, 33 indi-vidual national champions, 12 nationalplayers of the year, 11 national coaches of theyear and 12 Honda Award winners. Evenmore impressive, however, are the honorsaccumulated away from competition, whichinclude five Rhodes Scholars and 19 NCAApost-graduate scholars. In 2005-06, the CAAhad 11 ESPN the Magazaine Academic All-Americans and more than 1,500 of our 4,000student-athletes posted at least a 3.2 gradepoint average while lettering in a varsity sportand received the CAA Commissioner’s Aca-demic Award.

The landscape of the conference stretchesalong the majority of the East Coast, andincludes six of the nation’s top 25 mediamarkets - New York (1), Philadelphia (4),Boston (5), Washington, D.C. (8), Atlanta (9)and Baltimore (23). The number of televisionhomes in the CAA market exceeds 19 million.

The CAA conducts championships in 21sports. Male athletes compete for champi-onships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Femaleathletes battle for conference titles in basket-ball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. The CAA willalso begin sponsorship of a 12-team DivisionI-AA football league in the fall of 2007.

The conference made its presence knownnationally in men’s basketball, with fourteams advancing to post-season play for thesecond year in a row. George Mason becamethe first mid-major program since 1979 toreach the Final Four, knocking off power-houses Michigan State, North Carolina,Wichita State and Connecticut along the way.The Patriots were ranked #8 in the finalESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was thehighest ever for a CAA team. UNC Wilming-ton claimed its third league title in the pastfive years before dropping an overtime deci-

sion in the NCAA Tournament. OldDominion became the first conferenceteam to reach the final four of the NIT,defeating league member Hofstra in thequarterfinals. Drexel was the first CAAsquad to make the final four of the NITPre-Season Tip-Off Tournament, whereit dropped close decisions to nationalpowers Duke and UCLA. The CAA wasranked eighth out of 31 conferences in thefinal RPI with six teams among the top 88 inthe country.

In women’s basketball, the CAA had aleague-record four teams earn post-seasonberths and was ranked #8 in the final RPI.Perennial power Old Dominion, whichclaimed its 15th consecutive conference title, has a storied history that includes threenational championships (1979, 1980, 1985)and a national runner-up finish in 1997.Delaware, James Madison and Hofstrareceived berths in the 2006 WNIT.

The conference also excels in many othersports. CAA squads have won 10 field hockeynational titles since the championship beganin 1981 and Old Dominion advanced to thenational semifinals in 2005. In baseball, JamesMadison’s Kellen Kulbacki was chosen as theCo-National Player of the Year and the leaguehad 28 players chosen in the 2006 MajorLeague Baseball draft. The CAA is annuallyranked among the nation’s top 10 conferencesin men’s and women’s soccer, and tradition-ally sends multiple teams to the NCAA Tour-nament. Hofstra’s men’s lacrosse team wasranked #2 in the nation last season and tiedan NCAA record with 17 victories while CAAwomen’s tennis players Megan Moulton-Levyof William & Mary and Tatsiana Uvarova ofVCU both earned All-America honors afterfacing off in the quarterfinals of the NCAAChampionship. In 2005-06, 21 league teamsearned NCAA Tournament berths in 16sports. There were 37 CAA student-athleteswho earned All-America honors.

CAA member institutions are committedto excellence in the classroom. The ColonialAcademic Alliance was created in 2002 bythe league’s presidents with a goal of expand-ing their partnership to all aspects of univer-sity life outside of intercollegiate athletics.Among the programs already established arean undergraduate research conference, coor-dination of study abroad programs and grant-ing visiting academic status to student-athletes

traveling toan away contest so that they have access tolibraries, academic resource centers and com-puter labs.

In 2002, two faculty members from CAAinstitutions were awarded academia’s mostcoveted distinction - the Nobel Prize. John B.Fenn, a research professor in the Departmentof Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth Uni-versity, received the Nobel Prize for chem-istry, and Vernon Smith, a professor ofeconomics and law at George Mason Univer-sity, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sci-ences.

Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager hasguided the CAA since its inception. Long-timemembers George Mason University, JamesMadison University, the University of NorthCarolina at Wilmington, Old Dominion Uni-versity, Virginia Commonwealth Universityand the College of William & Mary werejoined by the University of Delaware, DrexelUniversity, Hofstra University and TowsonUniversity in 2001. Georgia State Universityand Northeastern University becamemembers of the conference on July 1, 2005.

The CAA traces its roots back to 1983when three of its current members- GeorgeMason, James Madison, and William andMary - were aligned with East Carolina Uni-versity, the United States Naval Academy andthe University of Richmond as a basketballleague (ECAC South). During the next twoyears, the league added 11 sports, acquiredtwo new members (UNC Wilmington andAmerican University) and decided to form anew association. The transformation fromECAC South to CAA took place on June 6,1985. Old Dominion became a member ofthe CAA in 1991-92 and VCU joined the con-ference prior to the 1995-96 season.

From all-star athletes to Nobel Prizewinning faculty, the CAA takes great pride inproducing performers who stand out both onthe playing field and in the classroom.
