As an Instructor, you are aware that the Check test will be replaced on the 7th April 2014 by the Standards Check. The total marks on the SC1 is 51 = Grade 6 A mark of 31 is Grade 4. Anything less and you will fail the S.C A score on the Risk management of 7 or LESS will mean an automatic fail.

What is coaching?

Coaching is about:

• Developing the pupils full potential• Raising awareness• Process ownership• Solving problems• Asking the right questions• Establishing a good rapport• Effective listening• Monitoring performance through SMART Objectives

The GDE Matrix

• The Grow Model was developed by Sir John Whitmore & Graham Alexander. It is a useful tool to incorporate in your lesson plan.

• Grow stands for Goal, reality, options and way forward.

• Grow - Agree with your pupil a topic for discussion• Reality – invite self assessment, how realistic is the set goal?• Options – Again invite suggestions from the pupil• Way forward – prepare a plan, any obstacles? Agree support

The present method versus Coaching method• Do Fault ID,

• ANALYSIS

• AND REMEDY ENCOURAGE SELF-ASSESSMENT?

• And most importantly, how do you get a pupil to evaluate a future risk?

How to structure a coaching session

The DSA has now embraced the findings from the Hermes project and refer “coaching” as CCL or client centred learning.

Set the Agenda - What would you like to do in today’s session?

Listen effectively – do not interrupt, let them finish what they are saying.

• Always• Listen• First

Questioning – Ask open ended questions, preferably involving emotions of the learner and other road users. For example “How would you feel if the other driver failed to give a signal?”Intuition – listen for cues before and after the words and between the silences

Coaching Core - Comps• Try to bring in some commentary driving, useful for pupils

who have a nervous disposition.

• After a task has finished, ask the pupil how they did, highlighting any strengths and areas for improvement

• Ask the pupil how they think they can improve? What help would they like from you?

• Don’t ridicule the pupil if they come out with a wrong or absurd response, this could have a de-moralising effect

Ways to GROW……

Page 9: Coaching has come to the adi

Elicit Feedback• Get the pupil to talk about the good part(s) of their driver

training.• Get into the habit of scaling – improves morale and transfers

ownership of process

• Where does the pupil need to improve?

• Encourage the pupil to self-valuate their own performance?

• Set small manageable tasks. Consider mind mapping, useful if the pupil is struggling with multi lane roundabouts or even a manoeuvre.

Levels 1 and 2 is what ADI’s currently teach to get the pupils through the Practical test.

Levels 3 and 4 is what I aim for to make safe, defensive drivers for life.
