Increasing Number Of Shipyards And Supporting Industries In Batam, IndonesiaCurrently there are more than 70 shipyards located in Batam and more than 500 supporting industries for this sector. Some major shipyards and offshore rig fabricators present here include: MacDermott, Nippon Steel, PT ASL, PT Palindo Marine Industry, PT Batamec and PT Drydocks World. Whopping 20% Increase In The Shipping IndustryThe Indonesian National Shipowners Association (INSA) predicts that Indonesia will see around 20 percent growth in the shipping industry this year on the back of the country’s healthy economic performance. INSA chairwoman Carmelita Hartoto said that most local players, especially those involved in coal and offshore oil and gas, will add more vessels to expand their business in 2013. The additional 560 ships, including tug boats, bulk carriers, platform service vessels diving service vessels, and tankers, will increase the number of Indonesian flagged ships to 12,600 in 2013. GE Oil & Gas Expands To BatamGE Oil & Gas has officially opened its newly expanded Batam island subsea manufacturing facility. The facility features a new high bay workshop that will enable GE to begin manufacturing its first vertical subsea production trees in the Asia-Pacific region and increase local content in Indonesia. Indonesian Government Provides Road Map and Strong Backing For The Shipbuilding industryThe Indonesian Ministry of Industry has prepared a road map for Indonesia’s shipbuilding industry development in 2012-2025. The industry is also expected to produce and repair all types of vessels from small to large. One aim, by 2020, the national shipbuilding industry cluster is able to produce vessels with a capacity of 200 thousand tons deadweight. The Government will improve ship design and engineering capabilities to support, through the development of Center National Ship Design and Engineering (PDRKN). Industrial raw materials and components locally, as well as the development of human resource skills enhancement shipbuilding center also continues to increase. The government also will secure and optimize the utilization of the domestic market as a base load for the development of the shipping industry. In addition, cooperation with the shipping industry in other countries that have been developed will also be encouraged.
